I would hope Apple will make this work for the second gen Apple TV too then again it's all about the money.

Everything works fine except one huge thing.

The tap will not set up the remote app. This requires you to use the old remote to type in your Apple ID to set up home sharing.

"This feature configures only your Wi-Fi network, iTunes Store account, and region/language settings. It cannot:

Set up multiple Wi-Fi networks or install network configuration profiles.
Transfer account information for third-party services (for example, Netflix, YouTube, or Hulu Plus).
Enable iTunes Match, Home Sharing, an iCloud account for iCloud Photos, or the Remote app for iOS."

I lost my apple IR remote and have been waiting for an easier way to setup my :apple:tv at other people's houses

Why not just use the remote app on your iphone and just type in the letters. Do most people not know of the remote app? It's light years better than the apple remote stick.

Apple is doing the right thing here. They exploit their options to the maximum by supporting integration between various devices. For the user this is a step forward.

See my post.

its marketing BS, finger print touch and blue tooth has been around for decades, Apple's customers are living in the dark ages and apple seems to want to keep them there

for example, why do this now? nothing else to offer new for the apple TV? this is not new at all and should of been there from day one via wifi on the same network, but wait, bt allows one to browse through the device, its photos, its everything with out been detected once inside unlike the ios that was recently exposed via NSA whistle blowers.

in any case all this BS is not about politics but about information = power to by pass any one criticizing them or competing in markets so its about intellectual property and economics

Why Tap ?

You don't want next door neighbor to reconfigure your Apple TV. Apple probably could've required user to confirm via Apple TV remote, but I think this is more elegant.

Ahhh...that makes sense. Good observation. I see now.

Oh come on. If you buy a new ATV just to save two minutes entering some config data you deserve to be parted from your money. But any reason to hate on those greedy guys at Apple hey? You know, Apple would be such a better company if they were LOSING money instead of profitable...

Other than someone who configures multiple Apple TV's for a living - I have to think this is a rather niche job description?! - how often does one re-enter the settings in the thing?

The new feature has a decent geek-factor I'll admit and could have some actual more widespread practical use in the future elsewhere, as noted. But as a news item?

Meh.

I think you are right on.

It's at least conceptually the same as iBeacon (BT 4.0, close proximity, etc.)

It's certain to be iBeacon. Why would they develop another system that uses Bluetooth LE for the same purpose?

iOS devices and Macs (10.9) can act as iBeacons. This feature requires both Bluetooth LE and iOS 7.

Apple:

Apps can use region monitoring to be notified when the user crosses geographic boundaries or when the user enters or exits the vicinity of a beacon. While a beacon is in range of the user’s device, apps can also monitor for the relative distance to the beacon.

In iOS, regions associated with your app are tracked at all times, including when your app is not running. If a region boundary is crossed while an app is not running, that app is relaunched into the background to handle the event. Similarly, if the app is suspended when the event occurs, it is woken up and given a short amount of time (around 10 seconds) to handle the event. When necessary, an app can request more background execution time.

Yes. Which makes me wonder why Apple couldn't get it working earlier. Seems lazy.

i) Development priorities
ii) Someone only just had the idea
iii) It's a tester for something else more significant (iBeacons?)

I'd probably go for a combination...

Is it an iOS7 only feature? In which case, it's obvious why it wasn't available (much) earlier.

----------

Graft an M7 with BTLE for a tag, and three or four iBeacons in a house and you can location track each of your pets all day.

Oh boy, what fun.

Now wait until employers start doing that for employee badges.

Fun?

Not so much.

USB port for a keyboard would be preferred

Not a good typist on small touch key devices. Big fingers/poor eyes.
Would also use the USB port for a hard drive when typing is not required.

...And for AirPlay to work to the Apple TV, you shouldn't need to be on an established network at all. It should work with WiFi Direct like the Macs and iPhones do for AirDrop.

You don't need to be on a LAN network to use airplay.
Set up a hotspot from your iPhone or iPad, or create a wireless network from your mac and have the ATV connect to it.
Airplay is then available without an already established wireless network.

missing a trick Apple?

Where is the app for my iPad that mirrors the ATV display? Seems a perfect fit, Touch controlled access to all the channels, settings etc. from the comfort of my sofa.

Both devices already have to be on the same network in order to use the remote app ... or at least that was the way it was in the past when I last tried to set up an ATV without a remote.

It supports BlueTooth keyboards already as well as the keyboard built into the remote app. A USB keyboard would not have a long enough cable for most people.
