You don't need to be on a LAN network to use airplay.
Set up a hotspot from your iPhone or iPad, or create a wireless network from your mac and have the ATV connect to it.
Airplay is then available without an already established wireless network.

Have you tested this or are you speculating? Is this new with this update? Because everything I've seen so far, and from experience with the earlier builds of the Apple TV OS, Apple TVs cannot connect to Ad Hoc networks (which is what hotspots are), whether they are created by your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. So the only way to get Airplay working is to connect it to a WiFi network generated by a router, like the Airport Express and the like. Having the internet isn't important, but a router is essential. It seems like a needless restriction, but it is there.

Weird that's it's not an app but some dialogs that seem to be built into the os itself.

Still waiting for a hardware update. NO WAY I am buying a currently 2-year old Apple TV that will not be supported with future OS upgrades after the new device is released(ie iPod Touch 4)

its marketing BS, finger print touch and blue tooth has been around for decades, Apple's customers are living in the dark ages and apple seems to want to keep them there

for example, why do this now? nothing else to offer new for the apple TV? this is not new at all and should of been there from day one via wifi on the same network, but wait, bt allows one to browse through the device, its photos, its everything with out been detected once inside unlike the ios that was recently exposed via NSA whistle blowers.

in any case all this BS is not about politics but about information = power to by pass any one criticizing them or competing in markets so its about intellectual property and economics

After your wifi comment you lost me. I have no idea what you are on about regarding browsing devices or politics.

First off, I agree it should have been there from day #1. That said, it is nice that they are continuing to enable functionality built into the device they currently ship, as opposed to making us all purchase new devices.

Secondly, you can't configure an AppleTV over Wifi if it has no idea how to connect to your Wireless network, or which Wireless network to join.

With regards to Late Implementation and BlueTooth
As opposed to NFC Tags, and additional radios, they are using technology that already exists. I actually applaud Apple for not caving to the NFC craze, instead, working on making BlueTooth more worthwhile and pushing forward in that technology.

I am sure this is just a glimpse into the future of Apple using BT Tech, for items such as this, and hopefully future iBeacons.

The AppleTV 2 has been receiving all of the updates the 3 has, all up until this most recent update which enabled the extra BT functionality which supposedly only the 3 supports.

My thoughts exactly. Both methods are tedious - just in different ways.

I shouldn't need to enable BT for this to work. I should be able to set up the ATV over Wi-Fi only, similar to how Airport base stations work.

I believe you need to use BT to set up the wireless connection among other settings.

iBeacon, a cool easy way to use bluetooth. Apple does not talk about it, Apple talk about green velvet and say "ass" in his keynote. What happened?

Very cool, but I don't see why this wouldn't work on an iPhone 4 or iPad 2, or even older devices for that matter. Just seems lazy.

Not with this. Now you don't.

See Below.

Everything works fine except one huge thing.

The tap will not set up the remote app. This requires you to use the old remote to type in your Apple ID to set up home sharing.

"This feature configures only your Wi-Fi network, iTunes Store account, and region/language settings. It cannot:

Set up multiple Wi-Fi networks or install network configuration profiles.
Transfer account information for third-party services (for example, Netflix, YouTube, or Hulu Plus).
Enable iTunes Match, Home Sharing, an iCloud account for iCloud Photos, or the Remote app for iOS."

Not sure about the multiple Wi-fi networks and the need to setup multiple wi-fi networks. Purpose is to transfer the current networks settings from the phone to the ATV so everything is on the same network. This is what 99% of people would want/need for setup.

I can understand the inability to transfer 3rd party integration though. Those aren't core apps and settings built into every device. Apple doesn't pull that data. However, I see this as a start/baby step, like the fingerprint scanner's current functionality, to see how things play out in the field. Then this could easily be open to developers to integrate into their own apps. For example, go into netflix on the ATV. open Netflix on the iPhone and then tap to transfer info at least. Or maybe once the keychain is enabled on the iphone things like this could be done in one fell swoop.

As far as the last point, I can see Apple adding that functionality after seeing how this rolls out and any problems that may result in the field. Currently what transfers is information that is needed to be set on every ATV. The options in the last part do not. Thus, they require one to select and enable if they want those options selected. Not everyone has downloaded the remote App etc. As I mentioned above, with Netflix, would be if Apple brought you to a screen to enable "remote" app by then opening the remote app and then taping to select the option and enabling it. Or, somehow transfer you the remote app in reverse fashion, from ATV to iPhone/iPad, if you didn't have it already installed.

The problem with your last set of options is that they don't necessarily apply to the device in your hand. If you have 1 ATV in the house and multiple family members, you can easily setup the current settings they allow with any device in the house, but you have to setup those other options specifically with a device that has every specific option you want to setup. If you have multiple ATV's in a house to match each individual household members devices then that is one thing.

All of that being said, it would not be difficult to code in a couple of questions to auto configure Home Sharing, and the remote application. It isn't a far stretch to think someone would possibly be interested in using Remote, if they are already using their iOS device to put base configuration on the AppleTV

That gap, is what Peace and I don't understand.

Yes,

Set up a personal hotspot on my iPhone 4S,
Unplugged the Ethernet cable from my ATV (forcing it to look for wifi networks)
Found my personal hotspot network and entered the password.
ATV connected, (iPhone shows 1 tethered connection)
Airplay and all over inter based services available on the ATV.

I have an ATV2 (which hasn't been updated recently) and iPhone 4S (on ios6 at the time) and this worked about 3 weeks ago.

Was trying it for a friend who has an ATV and iPhone but no internet at his new house yet.

However, in order to answer a couple of questions, you now have to pickup the remote and use that as well. I think that the setup screen should be enhanced and once you do what is currently offered, you then can be presented with additional setup options.

In its current form, you don't need to do anything with the remote, to get a functioning ATV, just tap with the iphone/ipad once activating bluetooth. I would think one thing Apple would want to push on customers is the avail of the remote app anyway. It makes entering info a whole lot easier than using the remote. After the initial setup, it could check to see if you already have the app downloaded on your device (via an itunes check). If not a way to tap to download it automatically would be cool. Then you can continue and do the rest of the setup for home sharing, icloud etc.

But, when it comes to home sharing why should you need to activate anything? Shouldn't it come with it already set to on? What's the harm. If home sharing is already set to on, on your computer, then the content and computer(s) should be immediately avail. I can see going into the setting to turn it off but don't get why its not on as a default.

Apple seems to now be paying more attention to the ATV and adding functionality to make setup easier going forward. I see this expanding to be somewhat similar to the setup of an iphone or ipad, with a wizard that guides you through initial setup of important everyday functions.

Ok. I'll quote this one last time. This time I'll include the link to Apple.

You can NOT use the remote app on your IOS device after doing the initial set-up by tapping. The remote app will not be able to control the ATV.

"Additional Information"

"This feature configures only your Wi-Fi network, iTunes Store account, and region/language settings. It cannot:

"Enable iTunes Match, Home Sharing, an iCloud account for iCloud Photos, or the Remote app for iOS"

So after you use the tap to set up the ATV the Remote App for IOS will NOT be able to control the ATV.

Weird, doesn't work with my iPhone 4 and Apple TV 3. Maybe it's iPhone 4S and up or Apple TV 2 or something. Alas.
