You don't need to be on a LAN network to use airplay.
Set up a hotspot from your iPhone or iPad, or create a wireless network from your mac and have the ATV connect to it.
Airplay is then available without an already established wireless network.

But what you described IS creating an established wireless network. I'm talking about WiFi direct connection. You could go ad-hoc between iPhone and ATV, but that would be a pain unless it's just for one person, which it isn't in my case, and would make any other iPhone that joins the network leech off the host's cellular data.

I have an Apple TV sitting in a room that does not have ethernet connection... because it broke. But it's connected to speakers. Now, there's a Mac there that could host a network that isn't connected to the Internet, but anything that joins that network will lose Internet connection. WiFi Direct is a separate channel totally and lets you go ad-hoc between devices while still maintaining the main connection.

Convenient feature..

But i still prefer manually tying it in.

I knew they'd be a catch requiring your Apple ID...

no thanks... who knows what Apple will do with it behind the scenes. Probably hand it over to the NSA.

Ok. I'll quote this one last time. This time I'll include the link to Apple.

You can NOT use the remote app on your IOS device after doing the initial set-up by tapping. The remote app will not be able to control the ATV.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5900

"Additional Information"

"This feature configures only your Wi-Fi network, iTunes Store account, and region/language settings. It cannot:

"Enable iTunes Match, Home Sharing, an iCloud account for iCloud Photos, or the Remote app for iOS"

So after you use the tap to set up the ATV the Remote App for IOS will NOT be able to control the ATV.

Not sure why you need to "Quote this one last time". I never said you could use the remote app automatically after doing tap to setup. No one here said you could.

Well you could but you have to enable the option using the regular remote 1st in settings to then configure the reminder of the settings. All I said is:

It WOULD be cool if, after the current tap to setup screen, you were presented with an option to setup the remote app for your device by using the same tapping method. However, this time it worked in reverse. If you have the remote app already installed, it would auto configure it on the device (iPhone or iPad) if not it would auto download the remote app on the device from iTunes and configure. That WOULD be cool.

That would take care of configuring the remote app for those that already have it installed. In the case of those that don't have the app or even know it exists in the 1st place, it would then allow them to easily install and configure the app without having to do anything (sans typing your apple ID password depending on your settings or device model).

This is either a baby step into testing the functionality here before expanding the functionality on the ATV or for use with other devices. Or, it could be there is a new ATV or TV device coming which negates the need to download any additional App for control and thus its not needed.

Apple TV 2 doesn't have BTLE, so it's literally impossible.

If my BT keyboard can connect with my apple TV I suspect an app on my phone can at least send my 30 char key to a text box making the process easier.

Other routers and computers have had one button WiFi setup for how many years now?

Its like something amazing when apple finally adds it.

But I have bigger problems than to care if the NSA finds out what shows/movies I have.

Hmmm....Homeland, 24, Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Enemy of the State....oh crap
