Former Time Warner Cable executive Peter Stern has joined Apple to work on the cloud services team, reports The Wall Street Journal. Stern will serve as a vice president, reporting to iTunes chief Eddy Cue.

During his tenure at Time Warner Cable, Stern was involved in talks with Apple about a potential deal for a joint television service that would be offered on the Apple TV. No such deal was able to be established, however, as Apple has had ongoing negotiation difficulties with content providers. Stern left Time Warner Cable following its acquisition by Charter Communications earlier this year.According to The Wall Street Journal, Stern is a vocal proponent for eliminating proprietary cable boxes provided by cable companies. He believes content providers should "be more open" to offering TV channels as apps across a wide range of devices.

Given his expertise in the cable industry, Stern may help Eddy Cue negotiate deals with media companies for a future television service. Cloud services also encompasses Apple Music, iTunes, and other iCloud-based products, so his hiring does not necessarily suggest a renewed interest in television streaming.

[doublepost=1473894360][/doublepost]At least they didn't hire someone from Comcrap/Xnull.

I dont think many people sing praises of their cable companies. But TWC has to be one of the worst consumer friendly companies out there. Why would Apple see value in hiring anyone from that company?

Not only that, Time Warner Cable's customer service team are poorly trained, with outsourced resources, with very little knowledge on how to troubleshoot minor issues.

Looks like his 18-year-old freshman college photo, circa 1993.

A sign of Apple going further user hostile?

And maybe from next iOS update we will see a lot of feature missing for the sake of minimalism, and screw up local media lovers, forcing everyone to use iCloud and AM. Just to name a few.

Apple has become arrogant recently and I can only see it going worse.

My two hated companies are SiriusXM and TWC. I can't stand dealing with them. I avoid contact as much as possible.

SiriusXM should be burned to the ground. I received junk mail from Them and by the U.S. Privacy Act, I contacted them to remove me from their mailing List and their customer service was confused how to remove to do this, where a supervisor actually had to figure it out. Sirius is a joke. (No Pun intended.)

Give us 10GB per iOS/macOS device!
Then Apple needs to prepare 10Billion GB, which is 100 million TB storage for every single iOS device. Even though with optimised storage technology, they still need 50-60 million TB.
Man, if you are Tim Cook, would you ever agree with such crazy idea?

I have TWC internet and own my own modem and router, I CONSTANTLY get this letter from them BEGGING me to sign up for their "bundle" with cable and phone (it says it's limited time "preferred customer" price but it's actually just the regular price from their site). They really can't stand that I just have the internet.

They should have hired someone with a background in services , Say major tech company that does services really well, and not TWC. This bloke sounds like a nice fit for ATV

I thought "Charter" was "Spectrum" now, and figured they had a captive consumer base they could prey upon.

They merged, Charter purchased Time Warner Cable and will be officially Spectrum in January 2017, according to my Time Warner.

Key sentence: "Given his expertise in the cable industry, Stern may help Eddy Cue negotiate deals with media companies for a future television service."

This guy probably know most of the key people in the business and have them on speed dial, thus the choice made sense.

There are three things I never want to see written in the same sentence, if ever: Time Warner Cable, Apple cloud services, and Eddy Cue.

A serious question: If his role at TWC as described by TWSJ was, "chief product, people and strategy officer," what the hell did their CEO and COO do?

EDIT: Having not followed their recent merger, I now see their former CEO was busy selling the company and receiving a $100M golden parachute for his one-year tenure.

At least he's not doing that douchey white shirt/blue blazer/no tie posed "our management team" photo that everyone is doing these days.

Will they realise it's him calling and then suddenly think "Hey, we should commit business suicide!"?

I just ignore them both.

OTA's good enough for me. If there's some I really like on cable, I just buy the boxed Set, like GoT.
