Elon Musk confirmed that Apple is indeed getting onto the transport business.
Tim Cook said recently that that auto industry is about to see a revolutionary change in transport, not revolutionary.

An auto steer, 3 wheeler, fuel cell transporter?

I can just about afford the latest iPhone... But an Apple car? Forget it! This thing is gonna be expensive !!!

That's not the goal.

You don't need to buy a self driving car that will sit parked 23 hours a day.

You hire one for an hour, it picks you up. It'll cost you a bit more overall than owning your own car but it'll be a nicer car and you'll have no need to worry about parking at home, work, the train station or the shops. No need to charge or fuel.

We have already destroyed and overpopulated this earth. More ways of Apple seeking profits won't fix anything. Soon the water levels are rising, and then the real hell breaks loose. Until then, let's continue to buy overpriced Apple products to make Apple stock holders richer, so they can have a chance to outlive the rest of us.

electric motorcycle startup Mission Motors, who had to close its doors after the talent drain.

that actually isn't a fact. they say that's why, but plenty of others feel it's because they had no business model, no product, and no profit...in which case it makes sense their talent left.

I bet you're great fun at parties.

It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out to be honest.

I'm actually less intrigued by the self-driving aspect of it, as there is so much innovation going on in that field that it's coming whether or not Apple come to the party.

What does intrigue me is how they're going to manage the complex supplier relationships, logistics and building of infrastructure. So much of a vehicle is engineered by third parties (Which Apple is very comfortable with), but in the motor industry you can't shift the blame, or ignore the consequences in the same way as you can with a phone that costs a couple hundred bucks to manufacture and a huge profit margin.

I'll be very interested to see where they decide to build any plant, or if they go down the route of a contract manufacturer for assembly. And for all the hype of the self-driving car, Apple have to design and build a car first and foremost. It's a very tight regulatory environment, despite what the news outlets would have you believe from the VW saga), with significant amounts of market localization, and in some of those markets the margins are already very tight, with many making a loss on most segments of vehicle.

So the question will be: If mainstream manufacturers get to the self-driving market before Apple do, with a solution that works, at a reasonable cost, would you buy an version 1 Apple Car with a premium price tag?

Apple are coming in at a time of great change in the car industry.

Car manufacturers are at a relatively early stage in software development. Apple have a potential advantage here.

Car manufacturers are at a relatively early stage in introducing battery powered cars. Apple have a potential advantage here.

Car manufacturers have a lot of experience building car, but are so invested in pressed steel manufacture of the chassis that it would be a lot of work to change to something else that might prove better for electric cars.

Gordon Murray (former Formula 1 designer, designer of the McLaren road car) has been proposing an iStream car manufacturing process that has a tubular steel chassis, reinforced with composite panels glued between tubes. Apparently the process requires up to 80% less investment than traditional plants. Yamaha have shown a concept car using this process, and note that they are not a car manufacturer.

Apple like to disrupt a market when they join, and there is potentially disruptive manufacturing available in a market that is already undergoing disruptive technology changes. I'm not surprised Apple are looking at it.

It can never be the case, in any realistic way, to have the human be a manual override for a self driving car.
That scenario would be totally unrealistic and impractical, simply it would never work.
Realistically it can. Just like cruise control has a Human override and the self driving in the tesla requires you to touch the wheel at a set time. So yes realistically it's possible and there are hundreds of ways it can be implemented in a new vehicle.

One of the more foolish things I've read today.

Companies like Exxon dgaf and are on the same page as you.
Companies like Tesla & Apple are actually putting their money where their mouths are, and are putting the environment 1st. Tim answered a shareholder question of "Why are you spending so much money on green energy when there isn't a clear ROI?" by saying "I don't think you should be holding our stock, if that's a concern to you". It was the boldest thing I've ever heard a CEO say to a shareholder at one of those meetings.

Go soapbox proselytize somewhere where people are less informed... here you just sound loony.

Its not only about profits. Apple believes they can change the future and protect environment by pushing electric car mainstream. They were able to disrupt industries before so I am hoping they will pull it off again.

After using Apple Maps for years, I'm pretty sure it flunked its deep learning class.
The predictive text engine, what ever the hell it's called, is even worse. It will routinely suggest a misspelled word.
they can call it the coolest or most intelligent name ever, but apple maps still sucks till this very day...deep learning class what a joke

I wonder how long before they start poaching people from McDonalds, there's money to be made in fast food as well, they might be able to make the thinnest burgers for the most money.
Great idea! More protein & nutrients and less waste product ~ Fast foods can definitely benefit with the help of Apple - but wait,, never mind.

In what important and fundamental way are they similar?

This is the basic architecture of a neural network: Every neuron in a layer is connected to every neuron in the previous and next layer. On the other hand, no neuron in a layer is connected to any other neuron in the same layer or any other layer (besides the previous and the next) for that matter.

That is fundamentally different from the basic architecture of the brain, wouldn't you say?

I take your point. The differences you name are important. Still, a focus on differences often masks similarities.

I guess the point this guy is making is that, relative to other algorithms, neural network algorithms are most analogically close in operation to a biological brain.

I fear that Apple are turning into Google.

What with the moonshots like Apple Watch and Apple Music, a self-driving car is yet another. I won't be surprised if they bring out Apple Glass at this rate.

MEMO TO TIM COOK: please concentrate on your strengths and make computers only.

And phones too!

The "detour" into phones was a great move for Apple to make.

Elon Musk can't confirm secret projects by Apple.
What are you even talking about????
