What the hell is crowd sourcing?

It can mean a lot of things in mapping. Waze is an example of awesome map crowdsourcing (and is my app of choice). I suspect they just want to leverage people to make corrections and add in businesses (a la Yelp style).

I feel that every few months the same story pops up saying that Apple is looking to hire a person to fix the Maps app and Siri... Talk about recycled rumors.

I won't go so far as to say Maps is useless - I do use it once in a while. BUT, the other day, I asked Siri for the nearest Yoga studio and it started suggesting one in Rome, Italy. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. My daughter tried the same request on her iPhone 6, and Siri then suggested a studio in Paris, France. Brilliant. Just brilliant!

If you reported that to Apple they'd say they just want you to get out and see the world.

Yes I'm aware that there are apps for it but here in Australia it's use is minor. But the potential is great. I don't want to use Google Now as that feels like you got every voyeuristic shopping website in your pocket.

Yeah, I do wish there were more uses as well -- but at this point I would just expect it to eventually be rolled together with Apple Pay (which I can't use anyway since I don't yet have a 6)

LOL - bad move.

In any case the problem with Maps is now not just a technical one, but one also of trust. I live in the UK and I reported POI errors, expecting them to be fixed within weeks of reporting (particularly since there were so many people out of work who could have been hired to process errors). Instead it took years for some of the POI errors in my town to be corrected.

Seriously, how hard can it be? You have the POI error-reporting routine use the camera to take a picture of the correct POI. GPS, compass, etc.are used to confirm the picture is genuine and the information is accurate. Even if only Apple devices were used, this would have worked.

I know what you're saying. I live in Europe (egad, in Scotland no less). Yet Apple's so-called research tax avoidance unit is located in Europe (Ireland).

Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

I live in the US ... I have submitted about 6 missing POIs over the past few months, all have been updated / corrected within days and I have received e-mail notification of the updates. I don't know about the rest of the world, but MAPs works fine for me and has improved with respect to POI dramatically the last year

I have Apple Maps, TomTom, Google Maps, Waze and MotionX on my iPhone and iPad. I can list problems with every one of them. I prefer Apple maps overall, Google Map for traffic info only (the new procedures to set up a route is pitiful), TomTom if driving interstates in a strange city (lane change graphics superior to all), and Waze to see what shouldn't be done. MotionX just takes up space on the device.

Add me to the list of those who would like to see WAZE style crowd sourced traffic info built into Maps.

There is a lot Eddy's team needs to get its act together on. Either he has too much on his plate or Tim needs to bring someone in that can move this stuff forward. TV is getting its butt kicked by competitor offerings, iTunes is a bloated mess and how embarrassing will it be if Microsoft integrates Cortana with Windows desktop before Siri comes to the Mac.

Apple needs to give iTunes to Lovine and Dre. And leave the rest for Eddy.

umm... so maps is going the way of Waze ? Since they also crowd source too.

While they may be updated with possible map corrections much more regularly, is there verification ?

I mean users submit a fake street/address ? It would hope its verified before updating not afterwards.

Probably much better way of do stuff anyway in the shortest possible time.

The only reason why i never use Maps, is because it used data... Although convenient between countries.

I just want to know what the next turn will be before I make the current one. Google implements this perfectly. I have no other complaints.

I used Maps yesterday to get me between two towns. It worked flawlessly. I realize that my experience isn't like some (most?) other's, but I haven't had any issue with Maps.

Oh, hey, we have an example where it worked. I'll forward this to Apple so they can stop wasting time fixing it.

Seriously though, this exact same story comes out every year since they introduced "maps": "Apple hiring so and so to fix maps"

At this rate, half of Apple's staff has been hired to fix maps. lol

Where am I? I guess I'm lost. I'm not in the woods. It must be Apple Maps. Off the cliff we go! Oh! I didn't mean to upgrade to Yosemite!

I feel the same way about Apple Maps as I do about Microsoft Windows, I hope I never have to use it again. After having been sent to the wrong street and wasted nearly 45 minutes walking back to the correct street, I was very late for dinner with my daughter. Never again, I wise I could delete the app from my Mac, my iPhone and iPad.

is this saying Apple needs users to not turn off the crowdsourcing features in

privacy/location services/system settings

so they can get as much wifi data and other data as possible to help make their maps awesome.

Is that about right?

Well if they are choices then they are bad choices. What reason would Apple have for not wanting Siri on the Mac? And how about third-party APIs for Siri? Third parties can tap into Cortana on Windows phone. Siri has been on iPhone since 2011 and hasn't progressed that much since then

Yep but a Siri API could be coming with iOS 9.

And they are only bad choices in your opinion. Apple seems to know what it's doing.

What the hell is crowd sourcing?

When you have millions of customers, you have millions of people who could give you information how to improve your maps. Crowdsourcing means taking advantage of the willingness of these people to help.

For example, I might be quite willing to have a walk through my village on a Sunday afternoon, note all the points of interest that are there, put a few house numbers down (on a long street, it would be nice to be able to navigate to a specific house number), report things that are not correct. Many people would. And if you add it together, taking that information would be a huge improvement. Apple doesn't seem capable of doing that.

Isn't the Report a Problem button in Apple Maps already a form of crowdsourcing?

don't know why people keep complaining about maps. I been using it for a while with no issue. I live in the LA area and have used them in other areas with no issue. But then again I am only one person so who knows lol.

Whereas, I live in the UK, have submitted dozens of errors/corrections over the past year or two.. received no update notifications, and all the errors are still present.
