I wonder if Apple employees, especially retail, get anything but nice shirts and back patting for achieving goals in general.

Easily the 3rd article in a few months about employees getting shirts for something.

What next in the Appleverse? The Apple song, the Apple dance, the what can we make the silly buggers do next. Cooky must be wetting himself laughing.

I guess this is a cool and a good thing. But it's not really that hard to close all the rings as one can define how many calories you need to burn each day in order to close the red ring which is the "hardest" of the three. Did Apple set any minimum value for active burnt calories or could employees simply set it to 10 calories a day and get it auto-completed?

I wonder how the sitting at a desk 12h a day Apple developers are doing with the challenge.

It would be great if this could be rolled out to customer base. Not logical but much better than the digital ones in the app.

But there'd always be people who abused it, just for the badges. Or people who attempt to sell the badges for thousands to Apple collectors. It's just easier to restrict this to employees who they know, on the whole, aren't going to abuse the fun.

Because if there's one thing that's always been true it's that the public generally can't be trusted with nice things.

I wonder how they fulfilled the t-shirt order? As each employee requires their own size choice. Did they have an internal order site or something?

Tim: Watch sales aren't great guys.

Eddy: How about we use the employees as a giant free marketing tools to get them talking to other people about the watch. Like a "close the rings" challenge. We'll give them TShirts so everyone can see and ask them about it.

Tim: You're right Eddy, our employees can be our biggest tools yet.

Phil: I'm looking at the biggest tools of them all.

Got Gold! and the endless "are your rings closed today" jokes were hilarious

I must admit I got addicted to closing the rings. I'm not an Apple employee so no gadgets for me unfortunately.
Anyway that's pure and simple marketing, the more people wear a t-shirt or the AW during the day the more the product is known

This thread, more than any other, illustrates the difference in outlook either side of the Atlantic. I thought I was reading one or two examples of 1st Class sarcasm early on but it turned out to be true gushing enthusiasm. Not until London woke up did the cynics start posting in earnest. As for me, I hope no 'genius' tries running on the spot to close his or her Rose Gold while I'm trying to take in what they're telling me.

How about a challenge to put out some new desktop computer hardware this year? That's been an open ring for about 3 years now. Or, better yet, fix the atrocious Xcode 8.3.x with the debugger that crashes when you hit a breakpoint?

I challenge Apple to live up to the legacy that Steve Jobs set forth.

Say more about Fitness at Apple than any amount of words can ever say.

From the man who gave us the "Fitness Watch" Pass the Donuts!

Even Worse:

Shame when someone let's themselves go this far, esp given the nature of the devices they are promoting to others.

Certainly not setting an example for others to follow :(

I suppose this kind of gamification helps motivate certain people, but I'm guessing it's the kind of motivation that doesn't stick. I want to be surprised that one's own health and happiness aren't enough to motivate some people to eat right and exercise, but since we have an epidemic of folks not doing that, I guess I can't be surprised. I'm just perplexed.

This is a good move from Apple. Probably extremely cheap to do and promotes good health with exercise. Anyone complaining about challenging people to improve their personal health needs to re evaluate themselves.

they could always run from floor to floor in Apple Park (a la Will Smith in Men in Black - Guggenheim museum. 1:53 - 2:13 or so)

That's what I would do and then go outside to get some fresh air. Then I would get back to work on Macs and macOS.

The company directory has a section for shirt/jacket size, which employees can change. This is how we got christmas gifts, etc.

People are very, very, very different. Psychologically, physiologically, chemically, hormonal balance, brain structure, personal and cultural backgrounds, all of that varies greatly from person to person. Some actually become happy while exercising, but some do not. Some love sweet food, but some love salty. Etc, etc, etc.

I'd say walking the perimeter of the new campus will be enough to keep most Apple employees lean and fit.
