Their goal is to make money.

Making money is a happy side effect of Apple's efforts to produce quality products that make people's lives easier.

Quite a few people think that not caring about the money is actually the secret of Apple's success. It seems the harder a company tries to make money, the worse their products become and a bit later the profits drop.

By the way, HP's fixation on making money was one of the reasons why Cook moved to Apple.

I'm not saying they can't do a bit of both. But people are talking about Apple here like they're a non-profit organization.

I would like to see an Apple home page honoring Pope John Paul II
and Lech Wałęsa for freeing 300 million Communist slaves in central Europe.

Not gonna happen.
Doesn't fit Apple's leftist agenda.

Apple should absolutely continue doing this. Apple's company goal isn't making computers. Their goal is to improve the lives of people (mostly by way of making nice computers, music players, phones and tablets). Here they found a different way of improving the lives of people.

There is also a big problem that Apple and many other companies like Google, Microsoft, and so on are having: The US government wants them to spy on people, and the companies want to make products that make their customers feel safe from government spying. Just recently Obama said that he believes the companies will do what he wants them to do "because they are patriotic". It is important for Apple and others to build up a reputation as the good guys so they can say believably "no, we are not enabling spying on our customers, and we _are_ patriots). "
The goal is to make money....

Much as I laud the sentiment, it's this kind of action that is viewed as self serving, pretentious, own-fart-sniffing behaviour that people love to beat Apple with.

I see nothing wrong with honoring him, unlike some on this forum. It highlights the people aspect of the world and presents Apple as something more than just a computer company for a brief period.

Apple has been presenting themselves as more than just a computer company since Jan 2007 when Apple Computer, Inc. became Apple, Inc :D

Last I checked none of those people had AMERICAN holidays dedicated to them so your comparison is apples to oranges. There are many other men/women in history that are equally great, but we do not celebrate them with a holiday here. For you to find some leftist agenda with celebrating MLK ON MLK day is really a amazing stretch on your part.

BTW just an FYI....MLK wasn't a leftist. So Apple using him in a leftist agenda is really illogical.

Apple has changed the world significantly for the better, in spite of them now being a megacorp.

Changed the world? Seriously? I question the stability of anyone who thinks a Toy company haschanged the world.

They have created a throw away society with the mass produced iToys.

Too simplistic. Making money is simply a requirement of sustainable business. It's meaningless to say that is their goal. They have stated many times that making a good product far exceeds their desire for money. They can make more money by making less of a product. The primary goal is a good product. Quality of the product doesn't stop just because an items development meets the making money goal.

I think Apple cares about money as much as anyone in the industry, they're just not as willing to cut corners to get it like some others are.

...though they do gouge the crap out of people who need higher memory and HDD space than what's offered in the default.

They advertise their quality, build upon that reputation, and charge a steep premium for it. That's Apple.

Had Apple not put anything on the website would be surprising. Google did and if Apple didn't we would hear on here how terrible Apple is for not recognizing MLK, Junior's contributions to society, etc etc.

Seriously. Imagine the headline is: "Google Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Its Home Page, Apple Does Not Follow Suit"

This is basically what I think about it: Last Week Tonight - Corporations on Twitter.

Apple should stop doing this. This man campaigned for equal rights, Apple make computers. There is zero overlap. It's embarrassing.

It is certainly not a publicity or marketing opportunity. Seriously, did Apple really lose all of their class the day Steve passed?

No one human works at Apple, or buys Apple products, ever, so it obviously doesn't apply to Apple (sic).

Oh, and I prefer companies involving themselves overtly like this (even if its a backdoor promotion) than pouring their money into lobbying... At least this is overt. They are putting their reputation on the line.

In doing this, they can later be called hypocrites if they don't respect their previous actions.

Social responsibility and involvement of companies in their communities is how it was in the past.

Companies like Walmart, which have nothing to answer too since they stand for nothing but making money, is what you should most be afraid of.

Are you actually reading what you post? How do this DRIVE TRAFFIC to Apple's site? All they did was post the acknowledgment on their website. You might as well blame MacRumors and other sites for putting it out there. I had NO idea that Apple acknowledged MLK until I saw the MR article. If you're gonna be MAD about this (which is ridiculous) then be MAD at MacRumors. Or did you just want to have a reason to talk crap about Apple? Oh yeah, that's probably it. ;)
Dude, Apple does this often enough to know they can count on MR et al. to whip up page views. They aren't new to the marketing game. They will sink their corporate messaging into whoever their target audience likes. Mandela, Steve Jobs, Budda, King, it's all the same to them.

I`m white, straight male, atheist... May I use my Apple devices or it`s not for useless (always guilty for everything) race like mine anymore... ?

They brought the first usable, effective personal computers (GUI), smartphones, and tablets to the world. Their respective industries all follow their every move in lockstep. They also changed the music industry and now potentially the mobile payment and home automation industries.

They changed the way people communicate, work, create, and listen to music. In a significant sense they changed the way people in modern societies live their daily lives.
