Everyone remembers him for the bad, such as the Iran hostage crisis, but he was the reason of some important reforms, breaks with tradition

- it was he in and not Reagan that caused the deregulation of the airlines(1978) , leading to reduction of the prices and a massive increase in air traffic
- motor Carrier Act (1980) deregulation of transport sector. This made companies like Amazon and Walmart with their just in time deliveries possible. Reagan took the credit for these because the effects started to be visible after carters presidency
- first time there was a department of education
- start of FEMA after Mount St Helens
- saved Crysler
- craft beer Revolution
- Was ahead of his time on energy (solar tech)
- he was the first to give more power to the vice president
- the first president to release his tax bill (after him, all did except Trump)
- protected a lot of Alaska Against oil drilling by increasing the size of national parks, which he got a lot of opposition for

Small tidbit
- first to walk to the White House at the inauguration
The DoE has been a complete & utter failure at educating our children and should be completely abolished. The teachers union has a stranglehold on education and it's past time it goes the way of the dodo.

Actually Nixon was the first to release his tax records. Trump did not you are correct but there was and is no obligation for him (or anyone else for that matter) to do so.

I expect the Department of Energy would indeed be bad at educating your children.

Except it isn't free so there's that
That was specifically mentioned in the quote you’re responding to. Nobody thinks free’ healthcare is free.
It can be free at the point of service, whether otherwise payed for in advance by you or another in a given country, and it can be universal.
Neither of these facts are true in the US.
Oh my god, some of you will turn the opening of an envelope into something political.
To be fair, this is a post about a former US president. This is literally a political post.

Tremendous legacy of service. Not a great president but outside politics lived an amazing life of service that should be honored by all.

Carter was a disgrace -- a total failure as president and a disaster for not only the American people, but freedom loving people everywhere. That is his true legacy.

We can thank him for the Mullahs in Tehran as he abandoned an American ally in need. He supported Hafez al-Assad despite his atrocities. He sold the Panama Canal for $1.00 undermining US interests. He presided over crushing stagflation -- runaway inflation comobined with no economic growth -- and then resorted to blaming Americans (on a national broadcast) for the runaway inflation caused by his own administration's policy failures. His weakeness was broadcast to the world as Iran took 53 American diplomats hostage for 444 days -- until they were released due to fear of the incoming Reagan administration. His administrative agency oversight was no better as Nuclear Regulatory Commission failed the country at Three Mile Island. So, he exhibited no understanding of foreign policy or economic policy and his leadership skills were terrible. Even as an ex-president he meddled in US foreign policy by befriending Hamas terrorists (which even Obama condemned) -- something no other ex president has done.

So, maybe he should have entered the priesthood or become a professional home builder or something else so he could project his so-called morality on people in a positive way. But his service as a public official was so horrible, it can only accurately be charaterized as a disgrace and nothing he did post-presidency makes up for the suffereing it caused.

Are you saying that criticizing Israel is same as being anti semitic. That is completely false. I would say today’s Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians and must be stopped but no one in the west is even bringing that up because they will be branded “anti-Semitic”. Are you going to say Bernie Sanders, a Jew, is anti semitic for criticizing Israel’s actions? You should hear and read the interviews from American doctors that went to Gaza recently. They have evidence that Israel is systematically killing women and children including babies. Even using snipers for that. How horrible!
Israel has shown more restraint than any other country in history in their reaction to Hamas mass murderers. And there is very little daylight between critiquing Israel and being a Jew hater. So don’t even go there.

Exactly. I lived during his Presidency, and he had his problems as President, but he was the most decent and honest man to hold office. When he left, it hadn't changed his fundamental character and he went on serving others.

As an example of his faith and honesty, if not political acumen, when he was asked for the famous Playboy interview whether he every cheated on Roslyn, he admitted to lusting after women in his heart and that was the same as cheating in his view. He was excoriated by many for that, and yet it showed both his honesty and deep abiding faith.

A friend of mine who lives in the US hated him as President, and years later met him in Plains (where he was often seen just walking around) and said afterwards he was one of the most decent, honest and genuine persons she has met.

RIP, Jimmy and fair winds and following seas...
If you read the Bible, Christ himself clearly says that lusting after another woman is adulterous. Carter could have lied or told the truth. He chose honesty and he won the election.

Wow.

And a happy new year to you ME.

That’s what it’s all about. Only me me me.
So you think it's fair that because you got a completely useless degree in Political Dance Theory that I should be on the hook to pay for the loans you took out?

In 1904 the Republic of Panama granted to the United States in perpetuity the use, occupation, and control of a zone of land and land underwater for the construction, maintenance, operation, sanitation, and protection of the canal. From 1903 to 1979, the territory was controlled by the United States, which had purchased the land from its private and public owners, built the canal and financed its construction.

We built that, the Torrijos–Carter Treaties gave it away...The treaties are named after the two signatories, U.S. President Jimmy Carter and the Commander of Panama's National Guard, General Omar Torrijos.

Don’t know what you’re on about, you sound very angry. Perhaps have a cup of tea and a sit down. It’s new year.

I believe that everyone should be helping everyone else in the best way possible. I believe that if one is lucky enough to have made wealth or been given wealth then it is their responsibility to help out people less fortunate than themselves, less able to be in the right place at the right time, or less able to be in a position where opportunities arise.

I most certainly believe this starts with education and ends with health. Both of which are and indeed should be the responsibility of the state, neither of which are particularly fair or accessible, at least in the US, unless you already have money.

Whilst it’s a perfectly valid choice to blether on about people taking what’s yours, without really understanding what one is saying; it’s really just as easy to try to empathetically understand the situation for other people, it makes one a better person and makes the world a better place.

It works out so well in Britain, where even they acknowledge they have the lowest survival rates for cancer and heart disease in the developed world.
Except the cancer rates are compared to other countries which also have national healthcare, except for the U.S. The top nations on that same list also have national healthcare.

“If I finance a revolution and make you the president of the new country, will you agree to give me all the land needed to build a canal that splits your country in half?”

Pretty much anybody would take that deal. It’s a great deal… for the guy who gets to be President of Panama.

Carter’s got two rulers – one for measuring pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, and the other for giving fascist dictators a free pass. His fans somehow think that’s a flex.

I am not an expert in realpolitik but I am sure that the Monroe Doctrine essentially overrides this. So it is more like a happy occasion PR stunt and a formality.

A. The Monroe Doctrine was a policy statement, and has no basis in law
B> It was designed to keep Europe out of what the US felt was it's sphere of influence
c. The US President can negotiate treaties with the advice and consent of the Senate

Yeah cuz the father isn’t the one carrying the child to the term and there had never been a case of a father of a child ever dying during the pregnancy.
Earlier it was common that women died during their pregnancy, but modern medicine has made this a rare occurrence. And abortion is never needed to save the life of a mother. Futhermore, abortion is more dangerous than childbirth: “One recent study concluded that immediate medical complications affect approximately 10 percent of women undergoing abortions, and approximately one-fifth of these complications are life threatening.” (https://aul.org/2013/08/13/known-health-risks-of-abortion/)

Don’t worry about it. It makes sense to everyone who believes in the equal rights of all.
It is profoundly ironic that you think you believe in “equal rights of all,” and nonetheless are fine with denial of the basic right to life of millions of unborn children.

Out of curiousity, exactly what chance do you feel Carter had? Wasn't that a function of the Supreme Court that, other than the appointment of Stevens by Ford, was largely the very same court that had just decided Roe V Wade a few years earlier? Carter didn't even get a chance to appoint any members of the Supreme Court, so I'm just curious what you think he could have done.
Thank you for your question.

In 1976, the Democratic Party adopted a platform plank opposing the Human Life Amendment. (The Human Life Amendment (HLA) would guarantee unborn children a constitutionally recognized right to life.) In 1980, the Democratic Party’s platform defined abortion as a “reproductive right,” affirmed the ridiculous Roe v. Wade decision, and labeled “reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right.” In stark contrast, in 1972 the Democrats rejected a platform plank asserting a right to abortion. Thus, the Democrats became pro-abortion when Carter was the titular head of the party. What Carter could have done, at a minimum, was insist that the HLA be part of the Democratic platform. In 1977, he did sign the Hyde Amendment (a policy that bans federal tax dollars from being used for abortions), and thus I wrongly and regrettably did not give him credit for that earlier. But, Carter supported legal abortion for at least the last 30 years of his life, a decision I am sure he now regrets.
