This is probably not the right forum to ask this sort of thing, but why is Muhammad Ali so revered? (And haters, racists, trolls need not reply; this is a serious inquisitive question for the well read.)

I understand Ali was the great boxer of his time but someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr has a better w/l record than Ali so why is he not as revered? They both have done the same type of trash-talking and bashing from videos I've seen…

So is it because of Ali's stance against the war and his civil rights contribution?

From the videos I've seen of Ali, to me he comes off as very cocky, full of himself, and arrogant. I wasn't around in his heyday but I saw and read about a lot of people looking up to him when I was coming of age. From what I've gathered, it seems maybe he's so revered because he was the first of his kind: brash, over-confident, opinionated, controversial, gave you a story to cover. Nowadays, these people are a dime a dozen so the novelties faded.

Would love to hear some genuine thoughts. Again, if you're gonna troll, save it, **** off and keep scrolling.

The part in bold pretty much sums it up. But check out any of his comments on youtube, or if you can, find the interview that Bob Costas, Bryant Gumble, and Jim Brown did on Meet The Press.

Found it!

Additionally, it wasn't just his bravado and style, it was how he used it to draw attention to himself, then while you were looking at him, whether you were sneering at him or not, he'd say something that simply made freaking sense.

There's always some bad that comes with people, and some here will focus on that simply because he was black and that's a fact, but ultimately, he was a world renowned athlete that never abused his fame for his own good.

It's not the most of my worries. Not even close. People like you being able to vote is up there pretty high though.

Nice segue.

Yes we should have left them to their own devices. We all know what wonderful places Muslim countries are to live.

Exactly what you should have done. It's not your problem, so stay out of it.

Ali was a POS coward !

The Huffington Post blares “Muhammad Ali Risked It All When He Opposed the Vietnam War"

Ali was a womanizing boxer and militant separatist driven by fame and fortune, Period. He didn't like it when the draft was revised to include the lower IQ folks like him and turned his back on America !

I guess those lower IQ requirements are okay in affirmative action, federal tax credits and quota hirings though.

I suspect that your post was a 'Troll post', however a part of me wishes to at least try to educate you with reality of the situation if it was not.

Ali "turned his back on America", because America never had his back, or those other [you allege]"lower IQ folks like him".

However, his IQ was high enough for him to decide that he objected to being drafted by an institution who brutally oppressed and discriminated against his human rights on the basis of white supremacy, yet cynically and ironically wanted to draft him into an armed conflict 10,000 miles away on the pretence of upholding the human rights of other non-whites in a foreign country.

This happened at a time when he could not choose to use the same bathroom as any other human in his country, when he could not choose to get a meal in the same restaurant as any other human in his country etc, etc, etc...

More than that he was brave to do that at a time when high profile black activists of his time were being silenced...

Yes. His contributions transcends boxing.

I'm not sure Apple knows who the real Ali really was! Most don't - here's a sample LOL

"All Jews and gentiles are devils....Blacks are no devils." —Muhammad Ali

"Integration is wrong. We don't want to live with the white man." —Muhammad Ali

"A black man should be killed if he's messing with a white woman." —Muhammad Ali

“Thank God my granddaddy got on that boat.” —Muhammad Ali

“So who were those little faggots?" —Muhammad Ali, after meeting The Beatles

A very narrow perspective. However, both sides of a conflict (Civil rights were very much a conflict) do and say things they may later regret, or learn from in the aftermath. It was also a time where language from everybody at that time would be deemed politically incorrect by todays standards. So comments about gay people using derogatory terms and those of other racial name calling were nothing compared to the physical violence at that time.

For example, I could quote a number of racist comments from the founders of the USA, but this would not really be progressive, or productive.

I think Apple should stop doing this front page thing. It will reach a point where people will say why did you honor this guy and not that guy and its all opinion based. I know they mean to do the right thing but it will create conflict.

I also like the idea of the guy who said they should recognized scientists. While Sports and Actress/Musicians are very famous, the harder and more life changing part is about the scientists. Think about those who created for us the Wifi, Compact Disc, medications, flat TVs, durable car tires, and the safe airplane. We know non of them.

I'm Cuban just like you, and let me tell you, there could not have been a better fight in Boxing history than one between Ali and our own Teofilo Stevenson, probably the greatest "amateur" boxer of all time. That would have been sick.
It was a true shame that Stevenson was never allowed to fight outside of the Olympics. He was one of the best I have seen. I remember as a child watching every match on tv with my dad.

Because he's tacky, young, too recent, and still alive.

Muhammad Ali was a great man due to what he sacrificed during the prime of his life as a boxer, but much more for what he did outside of boxing. He was a humanitarian and advocated on behalf of Muslims. Especially after leaving the NOI decades ago.

He obviously wasn't the first athlete to be so brash. But for a Black man in the 60s to be boastful, defy the draft, and be a proud muslim? My god, people went berserk. He was the most respected athlete of the 20th century for all his charity and because he became a mature, respected and respectful man by the 70s. His past statements and deeds were surpassed by his good will.

Like to see a scientist get this treatment every once in a while - maybe an engineer, lots of unsung heroes who really deserve recognition.

I wonder if when Kim Kardashian goes hurtling into the abyss Apple will make a front page memorial for her - in fact - please someone, make that - that would be fantastic!
I'd rather she just go hurtling into the abyss and do the world a favor. Her and her obnoxious excuse for a husband.

For one, he stood against war that the criminals wanted. It was a attempt by Europe's elite to start world war 3!

If you can't figure it out...
Well, I see you're being overly snarky, so I take it you're not pleased with what I said, I just don't know why exactly.
You didn't like him I take it and go to rub against the first who pays some respect without knowing him all too well?

If that's all fine, just wasn't sure. Didn't seem like it's worth pointing out.
Maybe I got it all wrong though.

Nothing like scrambling up and attributing the wrong quotes - you might want to be more careful in the future.

I don't have time for this new quote system... If you were misquoted, my apologies, but I can't waste any more time than I already do on a daily basis.

LOL! Stood against the war! You mean he was a draft dodger with a good PR campaign. Anyway lets keep celebrating someone who made a living by punching people in the face. Real hero here! I won't even touch his racist opinions. Real enlightened. LOL!

I think it's to do with heavyweight boxing being more high-profile than the other weight divisions, even now, but much more so in the 60s and 70s. That was a time that gave us the likes of Ali, Frazier and Foreman. And, Ali was simply the best.

An icon with feet of clay certainly, but an icon nonetheless.

Outside of the USA, nobody cared, or even knew about the NOI. But they saw in Ali an amazing sportsman and a sublime boxer.

From one (absolutely appalling amateur) ex-boxer to The Greatest - RIP Champ.
