Ali was a POS coward !...
Ali was a womanizing boxer and militant separatist driven by fame and fortune, Period. He didn't like it when the draft was revised to include the lower IQ folks like him and turned his back on America !

Um, white society was the militant separatist one already; Ali didn't have to do anything there. Womanizing, like Kennedy/s and Trump and ten thousand other celebrities, athletes and politicians?

As far as "coward!", the Supreme Court ruled that he was improperly denied his right to a deferment based on conscientious objector beliefs. So not a coward. Some athletes were genuine heroes to be sure. And *some* other athletes essentially performed PR and USO service--playing army baseball, shaking hands, posing for pictures, promoting war bonds), not exactly in the path of danger but looking good in their Class A's. Vietnam was a different beast to which a majority of the country had serious misgivings if not outright objection. Rightly so. You kind of had to be there (anywhere). Rocket City, red skies and JP-4, fish sauce and flop sweat. Clusterfck.

Why is a "sport" where those who partake, beat the cr_p out of one another with blows to the skull, revered and loved SO much? I cannot abide physical violence, and the masquerade of it being "sport" is the biggest load of old bollocks ever. I am sure HE was a very lovely man, but this "sport" is a crock, and only for the thickos of the world, for whom engaging in anything more constructive and worthwhile would never be a thought that entered their minds.

Only humans are so utterly stupid as to smack each other around the face and call it "sport".

LOL! Stood against the war! You mean he was a draft dodger with a good PR campaign.

What a simple-minded response. Draft dodgers ran off to Canada or Europe. Ali risked jail, a significant fine and stayed to fight for his right not to risk his very life for a nation that wouldn't treat him and other People of Color with respect and dignity.

He more than made up for his misguided earlier years with the NOI. He was an international ambassador for several causes and raised millions for charitities. He also inspired millions internationally long after his boxing days.

Oh please....PLEASE... enlighten me with your superior intellect. Interesting you skipped over my comment on his racist views....what...Mr Enlightened has nothing to say? He is a hero and we should just look past all the bad things he had to say. Now that is a "simple-minded" response.

Reading is fundamental. Guess your rage made you skip over my reply to your brain-dead response: "He more than made up for his misguided earlier years with the NOI. At the rate you're going, your head will explode by the time he's honored at his memorial on Friday.

Forgive me for "thinking differently" about the subject. I forgot that in order to be here we have to drink the Apple Kool-Aide and worship who they worship. Your right.....hero.....good person....lets have a parade. If hea on the Apple homepage he must be a saint!!!!

Tyson never would have laid a glove on Ali in his prime.

Ali wouldn't have made it through the second round against Tyson.

This is probably not the right forum to ask this sort of thing, but why is Muhammad Ali so revered? (And haters, racists, trolls need not reply; this is a serious inquisitive question for the well read.)

I understand Ali was the great boxer of his time but someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr has a better w/l record than Ali so why is he not as revered? They both have done the same type of trash-talking and bashing from videos I've seen…

So is it because of Ali's stance against the war and his civil rights contribution?

From the videos I've seen of Ali, to me he comes off as very cocky, full of himself, and arrogant. I wasn't around in his heyday but I saw and read about a lot of people looking up to him when I was coming of age. From what I've gathered, it seems maybe he's so revered because he was the first of his kind: brash, over-confident, opinionated, controversial, gave you a story to cover. Nowadays, these people are a dime a dozen so the novelties faded.

Would love to hear some genuine thoughts. Again, if you're gonna troll, save it, **** off and keep scrolling.

He was all those things.

People either appreciate the fact that he "punched" back at the establishment or they don't. I'd not characterize him as a good man but there are many that I'd lump in that too. With anyone polarizing you'll take form his actions, and words what you want regardless.

Take your meds. You can spout nonsense until you're blue in the face. Which I'm sure you already are.

The ignore list is my friend.

LOL! You are sooo mad that I don't just love your idol. I am sure he feels the same about you. Keep relying on popular opinion, Apple and Wikipedia to tell you how to feel.

Well, I see you're being overly snarky, so I take it you're not pleased with what I said, I just don't know why exactly.
You didn't like him I take it and go to rub against the first who pays some respect without knowing him all too well?

If that's all fine, just wasn't sure. Didn't seem like it's worth pointing out.
Maybe I got it all wrong though.

My point being that the community members here are a joke and will take any front page article as an excuse to rip on Apple via the subject. Or to complain about the lack of new Macs or iPhone storage when the subject is about something else entirely. I was poking fun at the commenters who felt the need to rush into the post and comment negatively on the death of a human being.

The internet made me too cynic.
Sorry for the trouble.

The part in bold pretty much sums it up. But check out any of his comments on youtube, or if you can, find the interview that Bob Costas, Bryant Gumble, and Jim Brown did on Meet The Press.

Found it!

Additionally, it wasn't just his bravado and style, it was how he used it to draw attention to himself, then while you were looking at him, whether you were sneering at him or not, he'd say something that simply made freaking sense.

There's always some bad that comes with people, and some here will focus on that simply because he was black and that's a fact, but ultimately, he was a world renowned athlete that never abused his fame for his own good.
Hmm, that makes sense. It seems his personality was endearing to most to conterbalance his ego. Thanks for the link. It must have been interesting to live through that time as it relates to this topic. You'd get to see this transformation all without todays media circus and real time tv coverage. I wonder if all that wouldve made a different impression and outcome if it had unfolded today. Probably.
I think it's to do with heavyweight boxing being more high-profile than the other weight divisions, even now, but much more so in the 60s and 70s. That was a time that gave us the likes of Ali, Frazier and Foreman. And, Ali was simply the best.

An icon with feet of clay certainly, but an icon nonetheless.

Outside of the USA, nobody cared, or even knew about the NOI. But they saw in Ali an amazing sportsman and a sublime boxer.

From one (absolutely appalling amateur) ex-boxer to The Greatest - RIP Champ.
Whats the NOI? I wonder if boxing in general was more widespread back then than it is now. I mean that was not too far after WW2 so the war high mustve still been going through everyones phyche.

Yeah thats a good point. I cant imagine, mustve been an interesting time for sure. Im really interested in how this all played out without todays media, since nowadays alot of it is fueled by them with people so easily sourcing a platform.
