Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida earlier today causing widespread devastation with winds up to 155 miles per hour. It is now making its way across Georgia and is expected to hit several states in the southeast, including Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

I grew up on the shores of the Gulf Coast, near Pensacola and Mobile, and that region holds a special place in my heart. That's never been more true than now. To all those communities in the path of Hurricane Michael, you are in my prayers. Please stay safe. - Tim Cook (@tim_cook) October 11, 2018

When the hurricane hit Florida, it was classified as a Category 4 storm, the strongest to hit the continental United States since Hurricane Andrew. It has now weakened to a Category 1 storm, but has done serious damage and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Apple is standing with our friends and neighbors in the Gulf Coast region, and will be donating to recovery and relief efforts. - Tim Cook (@tim_cook) October 11, 2018

Cook did not say how much Apple plans to donate, but for other recent hurricane disasters, the company has provided $1 million in aid.

Apple's default one million dollar donations to these mass catastrophes are increasingly insulting relative to their profits. As far as virtue-signaling goes, it's the least expensive thing they do all year.

The amount hasn’t gone up but the frequency certainly has. Before it seemed like one natural disaster a year, with links to Red Cross for the rest, now it’s after almost every one.

Would be interesting to trace these one million dollars to see exactly what accounts they pass through, where they go, and who they benefit.

Surely there is one in Apple's battalion of accountants who is tasked with doing that.

Is Apple owned by Timmy or shareholders all over the world?

It’s an American company. Despite the fact that they are massive and do business worldwide, they are American. It makes sense they focus more on natural disasters in their home country. I used Tim Cook to make that point.

Life must be hard when your always trying to find new controversies.

As someone who is living in Georgia and is seeing the devastation the storm has caused and is causing my prayers are with all affected. A lot of the inland areas being hit are not built to withstand this kind of storm. When Michael hit far west Georgia it was still a category 3 storm and I can only imagine the destruction it has caused. Seeing the pics of Florida it looks even worse. I appreciate anything Apple is willing to do.

Whatever Apple gives, kudos. Every bit helps.

I agree good on Apple for making frequent donations.

Donations are but a bandaid solution, a very temporary one. Cost for disasters will only increase in the coming years.

Donations. Maybe re-examine your thought process.

I agree, seems insensitive on that posters part. Whatever the donation it is better than none. I do hope most is applied to the cause vice administration.

[doublepost=1539235946][/doublepost]Does it matter if someone gives $1 or a company gives $1,000,000 - it all helps! If Apple gave nothing there would be no criticism so if you object to the amount they give then you give the same percentage of your income after tax etc as they do........!

So
1) how much donation will make you happy?
2) how much do you donate?
It is super easy to judge but they are a company making money and have to answer to shareholders unlike you and me.

I don't want to sound cynical, but the thing with such publicised donations is that they provide companies with an opportunity to be mentioned in public media, in a positive way - that is, this is a cheap advertisement for a company.
That being said, every dime counts for people in need.

They should just do it without advertizing it, kudos for helping, but sounds more like a PR thing than a real will to help.

Still good for the people that get some help!
What a dreadful outlook. They have zero obligation to do anything.
True, yet they feel they have obligation in advertizing it....

One can say that it is an advertisement the other one can say that they can donate more, but it doesn't change the fact that people get helped and they don't care about the intention of a donation.

While it's maximum sustained winds of 155 mph classified it as a category 4 hurricane, cat 5 starts at 157 mph. So this is the worst cat 4 possible.

So? A million is a million and if it reaches the right persons then who cares what accounting methods they chose to get it there?

Titli struck India at the same time. Will Apple do anything for India?

Did you donate anything?
