Apple to Donate to Hurricane Michael Relief Efforts

Apple CEO Tim Cook tonight announced that Apple will be donating to recovery and relief efforts for those in the Gulf Coast region who are located in the path of Hurricane Michael.

Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida earlier today causing widespread devastation with winds up to 155 miles per hour. It is now making its way across Georgia and is expected to hit several states in the southeast, including Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

I grew up on the shores of the Gulf Coast, near Pensacola and Mobile, and that region holds a special place in my heart. That's never been more true than now. To all those communities in the path of Hurricane Michael, you are in my prayers. Please stay safe. - Tim Cook (@tim_cook) October 11, 2018

When the hurricane hit Florida, it was classified as a Category 4 storm, the strongest to hit the continental United States since Hurricane Andrew. It has now weakened to a Category 1 storm, but has done serious damage and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Cook did not say how much Apple plans to donate, but for other recent hurricane disasters, the company has provided $1 million in aid.

The amount hasn’t gone up but the frequency certainly has. Before it seemed like one natural disaster a year, with links to Red Cross for the rest, now it’s after almost every one.

Surely there is one in Apple's battalion of accountants who is tasked with doing that.

It’s an American company. Despite the fact that they are massive and do business worldwide, they are American. It makes sense they focus more on natural disasters in their home country. I used Tim Cook to make that point.

Life must be hard when your always trying to find new controversies.

As someone who is living in Georgia and is seeing the devastation the storm has caused and is causing my prayers are with all affected. A lot of the inland areas being hit are not built to withstand this kind of storm. When Michael hit far west Georgia it was still a category 3 storm and I can only imagine the destruction it has caused. Seeing the pics of Florida it looks even worse. I appreciate anything Apple is willing to do.

I agree good on Apple for making frequent donations.

As someone who is living in Georgia and is seeing the devastation the storm has caused and is causing my prayers are with all affected. Donations are but a bandaid solution, a very temporary one. Cost for disasters will only increase in the coming years.

1) how much donation will make you happy?
2) how much do you donate?
It is super easy to judge but they are a company making money and have to answer to shareholders unlike you and me.

I don't want to sound cynical, but the thing with such publicised donations is that they provide companies with an opportunity to be mentioned in public media, in a positive way - that is, this is a cheap advertisement for a company.
That being said, every dime counts for people in need.

I would speculate that Tim and other highly paid employees at Apple - along with highly paid people in general - give personally to charity and disaster relief aid but do so without need to broadcast their generosity.

While it's maximum sustained winds of 155 mph classified it as a category 4 hurricane, cat 5 starts at 157 mph. So this is the worst cat 4 possible.
