In helping family and friends with Apple issues, I’ve noticed a pattern where many of them think their Apple ID is their password. This might clear that up for some of them?

The curse of free tech support:

A large segment of the population think they "know" technology because they used gadget X in a limited capacity. They can be identified by the inability to explain the difference between texting, email, wifi and the internet. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Try to teach him to fish and he becomes agitated and confused, accusing you of not wanting to help.

What’s happening?

changing an Apple ID that has associated passkeys will have the old Apple ID associated with those passkeys ... the only method known (at this time) is to restore the old Apple ID then delete the passkeys

I'm using only HW passkeys (Youbikey). Good to know that such option has one more advantage (I was not aware of). The problem is that HW passkeys still don't work in some scenarios (certain browsers + certain sites, like Firefox+Amazon or Microsoft+Safari). Hopefully they'll fix it eventually.

Well, Apple Marketing team has spoken for themselves with their actions, and marketing team does not care. In my view, marketing is just legal ways to spread lies, nothing more. It is up to the receiver to accept or reject it.
nonsense. You are assuming this is purely a marketing driven change. It could easily be the result of feedback submissions or even customers calling apple care for help.

Not like your speculation is truly what happens either. Apple is not going to tell the truth, and a mere name change is most likely the work of marketing team.
Besides, I would have a very hard time believing people suggesting apple to change Apple ID to Apple Account, and for exactly what. Apple In its core is a marketing company that happens to also do tech products. You may disagree.
