Are they still Uyghur by the time the PRC gets through with them? Gotta love a government that considers factory work as the last step in "rehabilitation".

Ahh, the enlightened liberal American (motto "I respect all differences!"), absolutely certain that they know the best way to run a criminal justice system, and that "respecting all differences" should not, god forbid, require actually accepting that someone else might be allowed to make their own decisions.

Just a reminder that rehabilitation was a, perhaps the, central feature of the American penal system until the 1970s. It's still the central feature of the system in many other countries, for example Japan, where over 90% of prisoners work, either within the prison or as contract laborers.

There WAS a time, you know, when this was considered a GOOD thing in America, a way for prisoners to become integrated into the web of society outside the prison, to learn to do something useful along with self-discipline...

You gave yourself the answer why saving a couple bucks on manufacturing or parts mean nothing. And if people are willing to pay you can as well raise the prices by 20$, keep your margin in place but have fair wages.

Who decides what a fair wage is? I've been to third world countries, and they don't need a Western "fair wage" to have a great life in their current environment. Forcing that on global companies is ridiculous. There is so much more that needs to change in that environment to make it like the West - it isn't and will never be all about more money.

No one said anything about western wages. But if you use forced labor or pay local minimum wage (~330$ in China for fulltime) it's not really responsible manufacturing.
If you do business with someone it should be a good deal for both sides. In that case the employee should be able to make a living while the employer should still make a nice profit on top of the wage. If one of them keeps all the money it simply is greed.
