how can apple have such a large amount of money on hand to buy companies at will, but not feel like it's possible to reduce computer prices? they obviously can afford to sell them for less and still turn a profit.

that would certainly make this customer happy!

Doesn't Apple put themselves in danger of becoming a complete Music monopoly if they buy all the competition. Come on Apple, leave a few of the smaller fish.

You get what you pay for, a great OS and great computer, besides if you can't afford them, then dont buy them. Pretty simple

I still don't see the sense in spending 100 odd quid a year for music you don't get to keep. Also in my experience they don't have a lot of music. Good concept but not in practice imo.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Apple should buy Netlist for the Hypercloud Memory chips for the new data center and then help fund the IP lawsuit against Google. They will make so much money with the treble damages... No joke

The best music-related application since Winamp (and Napster)

I don't know whether you know, but Spotify also has a basic package, which is just streaming for free with some advertising in every 20 minutes or so. It's just like the good old invention, called commercial radio, but with the songs you want.

Also, what makes Spotify an excellent choice for music is that you can purchase songs and you can listen to the ones on your computer without opening iTunes. Since I started using Spotify, I only used iTunes once - for downgrading the OS on my iPhone. Even that was something that Apple doesn't approve of so I had to 'hack' a bit.

But of course, if you like, you can pay the premium fee and use the service without interruptions, even on your mobile or offline.

What about syncing new music to your phone? You can't use the app without a premium account can you?

but not shareholders, and at the moment customers seem more than happy to pay the prices apple sets for their products.

Bollocks. :(

I really hope Apple don't buy Spotify just so they can kill it off.

Why kill it? Isn't this exactly what Apple needs, and is missing -- a streaming music service as an option to downloads. Downloads are starting to feel old too in my opinion, once you've got used to the Spotify model.

Are you kidding? Spotify is excellent for keeping up with new music releases as well as exploring and discovering new music. Then you can of course still purchase physical albums if you really feel strongly for some artists -- heck Spotify takes care of that and streamlines this aspect too. Not to mention getting your friends together and sharing music playlists so that you can find new stuff if you have friends with similar interests. Also, Facebook integration. It's all what iTunes Ping isn't.

Year after year, Apple customers are at the top of every single customer satisfaction survey.

It makes you almost think that money can buy happiness (at least in consumer electronics purchases).

:D

Well just ask the Oil companies why they still charge so much money for petrol when they have such huge profits...

If Apple adds Spotify access to the mobileme subscription, I'd be interested...

Why did they shut down Lala which offered a similar service to Spotify?
I think Lala 3.0 was more of a competitor to iTunes than complementary like Spotify. While Lala did support streaming as well, AFAIK it only allowed that once. Other than that, the distribution model sounds similar to iTunes.

Edit: Ooh, I see Lala did support unlimited streaming too, but only if purchasing that. Anyway, if I were to purchase Spotify, it would be a lot for its technical merits and community, and having an already functional economy in Europe.

If Apple keeps buying music streaming companies just to shut them down, I hope the government(s) get involved and starts looking into monopolistic practices.

I mean, seriously, I like many Apple products but this behavior is inappropriate and we need healthy competition in the marketplace, not one company buying everyone up and shutting them down just to get rid of competition.

I use Grooveshark, so if they kill of Spotify, big deal. If they do something really cool with it, even better. Nothing but good can come of this as far as i'm concerned. :D

Its great if you listen to music on your computer a lot but I just don't see the reasoning behind the premium service which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the only way to access the app (music on your iPhone if you don't use iTunes. Its so missing an awful lot of music.

Why not just purchase the songs you like on iTunes?

Because £9.99 a month for unlimited ad free music is a lot cheaper if you listen to a lot of new music. If you want to find a new band or artist you can just put it on instantly and not feel robbed if they turn out to be awful.
