Without Spotify, I would have never come across this version...

how can apple have such a large amount of money on hand to buy companies at will, but not feel like it's possible to reduce computer prices? they obviously can afford to sell them for less and still turn a profit.

that would certainly make this customer happy!

Remind me never to buy stock in a company you run.Oh wait, you'll never get the chance.Nevermind.

I don't know whether you know, but Spotify also has a basic package, which is just streaming for free with some advertising in every 20 minutes or so. It's just like the good old invention, called commercial radio, but with the songs you want.

Also, what makes Spotify an excellent choice for music is that you can purchase songs and you can listen to the ones on your computer without opening iTunes. Since I started using Spotify, I only used iTunes once - for downgrading the OS on my iPhone. Even that was something that Apple doesn't approve of so I had to 'hack' a bit.

But of course, if you like, you can pay the premium fee and use the service without interruptions, even on your mobile or offline.

And when Spotify goes out of business do you get to keep the songs you"bought"?Are they DRM free downloads like Amazon/Apple?

I don't know, because I only use the free service, I don't mind the occasional adverts and wherever I am where I want to listen to it, I can use a computer. Even in the garage, an old eMac is running Spotify like a dream. The same machine is struggling under iTunes.

My only concern is that due to larger music industry interests, songs occasionally seize to be free to stream anymore. Anyway, I listened several thousands of songs that I wouldn't buy, whoever is running the service. This is my only chance to listen to songs from my childhood, for example. Often I don't know the artists or the titles, but through lists and recommendations I find dozens of songs that I almost forgot that existed.

Well just ask the Oil companies why they still charge so much money for petrol when they have such huge profits...

If Apple adds Spotify access to the mobileme subscription, I'd be interested...

Surprisingly Oil company profits,at around 8%,are less than:
the food industry
Telecom
Software and services
Banks
Pharmaceuticals
APPLE(30+%)

And no I don't work for them.
A quick search will show this.
A real eye opener is to look up the amount of taxes you pay when filling your tank.Large in the US,mind-blowing in most countries using the term petrol.

Lala

As a former Lala user the one piece of tech I think Apple went for was a nifty one, the one piece of software engineering that bought the company. And now with Mac Store coming, I can see it being used there.

Simply, it was Lala's ability to look into your iTunes library and suck all that info and sync it into the cloud. I could get my iTunes anywhere there was a browser, my music anywhere. I have an average iTunes library, around 40 gigs worth of just music, the kicker with the Lala service was it was fast - fast. That was the piece of code I think Apple wanted above and beyond the streaming music.

I do miss Lala, and looked into rdio, but wow, what a crappy Adobe Air desktop client. No thanks, I'll wait for Spotify or something better.

On a final note, I'd love for Apple to buy Spotify or better yet roll their own. I'd trust that Apple is not going away and my music I invest in will be there when I want it.

A Spotify spokesperson has denied the rumor that they have talked with Apple. Also said they have no interest in selling.

That's good to hear, let's hope that it's true. I wouldn't want to see Apple buy Spotify since they likely would shut it down or at least get rid of the free version. Now it would be nice if Spotify expanded to the US so I could use it without a proxy.

Looks as though Apple did try and have talks and that Spotify has turned around and said Kiss my chocolate salty balls. So Apple how about you take that 51 billion and make a ****ing phone that doesnt drop calls! Or how about this, a MBP with an HDMI port, a n iMac with HDMI in and out. Or stop ripping people off with your expensive charges for BTO. Jesus.

Isn't Spotify jointly owned by the big four record labels?

I call bull ****!

Sony BMG Music, Universal Music, Warner Music, EMI and Merlin jointly own an 18% share of Spotify.

Fingers crossed that this is true. :)

Buy a triple; Spotify, Netflix and Akamai.
Both for some of the technology, especially Akamai, and to eliminate competition before it grows into serious competitors to iTunes (could also happen if said companies where bought by Google, Sony or others).

A CD (in Norway) costs a little under two months worth of Spotify Premium.

I'm sticking with Spotify.

Not only is Spotify a fantastic service, the software (Mac / PC Client) is a MILLION times better than iTunes.

iTunes with it's annoying 'Genius', Annoying Ping that i don't want but insists on popping up next to every bloody song in my library.

Obviously Spotify is a threat to the iTunes world Job's has created, maybe if the Apple fans in the states got a taste of it then they might actually like it.

Personally i pay for the premium £9.99, means I can make music playlists 'offline' on my phone, which I use to play music in my car etc.

AND i can't believe how instant it is.... i mean it makes the iTunes store look like a lumbering dinosaur, type in a song and BOOM! it's there, play it and BOOM! it's playing, couple it with Airfoil and you can still stream to a Airport Express (that's what I do).

+1

The only people i know that dont like Spotify are the ones they have never tried it

Spotify (Premium) for the most part.

I've always kept my iTunes library on my desktop PC, rather than on my MacBook.

I also switch between Windows and Mac OS X a lot on the MacBook (occasionally Linux as well), which means that maintaining a local music library is too difficult.

In the past 12 months I've had a Symbian Phone, an Android Phone and an iPhone 4.

In the last few weeks, I've set up an old Laptop as a media PC connected to my TV.

All of the devices I mention above have got Spotify installed on them.

I can use my account to access the same wide library of music without having to store anything locally. I can switch between Mac OS X and Windows part-way through a playlist. I can be anywhere with an EDGE or 3G connection on my iPhone and choose one of 10 million songs to listen to.

So theres no real benefit to having higher quality music unless you've got a really high quality sound card and speakers on your pc ;)

What about if you go to someones house and they've only got a cd player? I really just don't get why you would want to pay for music you don't get to keep?
