I could see this, especially since you can get iTunes on Windows. Why not put the service up for users on an Android device!

As far as the Beats acquisition. I don't know why Apple would do this, there must be something there that we, the general public do not know about that Apple wants!

Unfortunately, they never disclosed their per-song royalty rates.

I see why it is attractive... Beats makes ridiculous Margin.
But can it last???

This fad has no staying power.

:apple: You are going to need that $3.2 billion later on... Save it!!

Oh, please, no.

Worthless acquisition.

Really? Why? Don't judge the technology based on its current marketing/branding.

Apple's buying the technology. Doubt they'd keep the same designs and branding.

The mainstream/casual listeners who buy Beats headphones actually think they are good headphones. Same goes for Bose. I don't care to much for either and use Polk and Sennheiser.

It really doesn't matter how a couple geeks posting on Macrumors feel. The mass consumer doesn't know or care how a good headphone is supposed to sound. Some even use the Apple headphones which are equally terrible.

I can care less about the acquisition. I will continue to buy whats suits my taste.

That is true until the public sentiment changes.
When that happens with apple products losing momentum or hype, there is still solid hardware and software which are functional, which preserve the core customer base.
When this happens with Beats, there will be nothing left except for design.

Never tried Beats headphones. Are they really as bad as people say? If so, that is ridiculous considering they cost a few hundred dollars. I've been using a pair of Sony V700 headphones for about 10 years that I paid about $120 new. They are still in perfect condition and sound great. Best headphones I've ever owned.

I think they are worse than normal headphones because of supposedly distorted EQ.

I really don't think this is a gear nerd or audiophile issue.
Everyone who listens to music should, in principle, want an accurate sound reproduction.

Look, I hate Beats as much as the next guy but you're looking at this from a personal take. From a business take Beats has been outselling most decent quality headphones. They aren't outselling because they are better but the brand brings customers, albeit customers with poor taste in the sound of music. But still, the brand brings customers and at the end of the day when you're running a business it's about making money, not to "look good" to your Macrumors enthusiasts.

Agreed Henry -
Beats aren't bad because of sloppy design, electronic mis-matches, of poor quality materials. They are "bad" by way of very, very careful design.

That bass attribute, tied with good marketing, makes them very successful.

Perfectly stated. I don't know why anyone would think this was about other than money Apple knows what they're doing. Beats, at least right now, is a cash cow, and apple being a company, likes cash!

Beats headphone do exactly what they were designed to do and that is why they are successful.

1. High Bass level
2. Comfortable
3. Cool Branding

They are not aimed at the Audiophile market. They are aimed at the Young with disposable income.

repeated for neccessity -

for those of you who are saying that Apple is primarily buying them for the content licensing deals -

1) once this deal is comes up for renewal, I fail to see how Apple would get any better pricing than Spotify/Rdio/Google. the market has competitive entrants, I use Google's iOS music app to stream my own library AND a catalog of other music
2) a $500 billion market capitlization and you don't have the talent to build your own streaming service? Even after acquiring lala? seriously?

Please remember a little thing called: Patents

Have you own beats? Probably not because of your statement. And this has nothing to do with cook, doing just fine.

I've spent so far more than 300$ on Beats, grat looking, but mean audio quality, I'm not the onlyone with such appretiation about Beats quality, and Beats "hype" I mean also is gone, not what the kids wants, now or everybody wants are wilkins, sennheiser etc much better audio quality (and actually better build too), Beats are MODE, you want Applea Earphons in Mode, contract Justin Biever amd put on her head, no matter if are s*it every kid will want one pair.

I'dont see the logic bout such aquisition, since gives no key advantages, Beats never helped HTC to tift off (while a few appretiate the bundles earphones), while actualy mor than 3/4 of beats sales are on apple related products.

About the *curated* music streaming, why not to acquire smaller and cheaper but HIGHLY succeful services as Grooveshark (my fav and free), Rdio, SPOTIFY, etc, but while not just IMPROVE the actuallly fair iTunes Radio with PREMIUM Playlist, and community selected play list ?
.....

Weeks Ago, Facebook was critiquized hard about Occulus Rift Aquisition, at least they invsted on the best product on the catgory, and the best tachnician (not easy to find elswhre).

So By Far Mark Zuckerberg seems a more acuted/compromised mind than Cook, (Which doesn mean I being Facebook Manaer would ever purchased Occulus Rift, instead I'would but Blackberry).

Good Point, but as from a Business Perspective, an Investimet is ponderated not only about it market appretiation, but about they advantages over the competitors, and there is where Lacks of Sense, Actually Beats are mobile target waiting to be hitted by Anyone capable to advertise a pair of much better quality producto on the Ears of some famous or infamous artist (name: Justin Biever/Lady Gaga/ etc).

So, where are the active, real estate of Beats? to me seems vaporware aquisition, much better did M$ on Skype, or Facebook on Whatsaap, but then Apple comes and Buys Beats... So? Samsung, Google are Happy today.

Beats they are the best in their industry they command a whopping 60% of the market share. Are they the best headphones no. They are what they are and they market their product accordingly they do not claim to be a audiophile brand. Beats takes most of the profits and industry sounds familiar why wouldn't they work together?

Disney bought LucasFilm for $4 billion.

Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion.

Apple bought Beats for $3.2 billion.
