I'm guessing that many people who hated Beats headphones will suddenly find them to be audiophile quality. :D

Cook's fall has begun, beats are the most overrated product I've ever OWNED, the *curación* of they radio listing aren't just better than most crowd sourced listing available so why pay 3.2 billion on the biggest vaporware brand in the US?

Remind us which global company you are CEO of again...

For one Apple is not in the audiophile market. Beats may make mediocre products according to many here, but to the rest of the market out there they make a desirable product. And for all we know Apple might take the technology and improve on it. It will not be the first time they have done that (mainly in the software space though).

In addition in terms of business it makes more sense, because Bose, B&W etc have other product lines (speakers), which would be less complementary to Apple's business. Beats is only headphones and some connected portable speakers. It would fit nicely to the rest of Apples product portfolio.

It's their resources they want and brand recognition.

Beats they are the best in their industry they command a whopping 60% of the market share. Are they the best headphones no. They are what they are and they market their product accordingly they do not claim to be a audiophile brand. Beats takes most of the profits and industry sounds familiar why wouldn't they work together?

We have a winner!

Apple are hoping to get a good amount of money from the cash cow before it dries up and/or another musician lends his name to a product and people buy in.

Apple's position right now is such that as long as things are just 'good enough', they'll keep hold of customers. It's only when customers have reason to try alternatives that things will slip.

A 19 year old hip-hop fan won't give Sennheiser a chance, even though they're miles better and miles cheaper, much like most iPhone owners I know have never tried an Android device.

maybe dre will finally release his Detox album now after 10+ years of promoting it.

I find this move to be like swilling vinegar. First off I grew up in a family of sound engineers, Ive worked in audio, in different facets. Beats and most headphones are really bad. Beats is a marketing brand, and Iovine is a genius for pulling the greatest hustle in business ever. Beats will benefit Apple zero, Apple will benefit Beats massively. Also their horrific pay app apparently is the reason the went for Beats. Honestly I find this retarded, and Dre's video with Tyrese claiming it as juvenile and dumb as spending 3.2 bil on headphones that sound worse than the garbage ear buds Apple offers with its devices.

I wish MS, or Google or some other company was making a good alternative to OSX and iOS because Id go there. Problem is they dont.

God I miss Jobs

I have to say i agree with you. I don't know what all the negativity with Beats is all about, i understand the audiophile's chipping in, but what you must understand is that the average consumer is not an audiophile. I was a little cautious about buying Beats headphones a few years back, but i took the plunge and brought some Solo HD's that were on sale here in the UK. I have used them everyday, they have superb sound quality and are very durable, i use them at home, on the bus and out in public. I listen to all kinds of different music, and so far i have not heard a song that has sounded rubbish on them.

Apple buying Beats is probably going to be for the streaming service, i have to admit that i was surprised when i heard about this, but hey it's Apple they have surprised us in the past :D

You sir are in the minority. They are not durable. Made in china crap.

On this forum which means absolutely nothing. Meanwhile in the real world millions of people think They are awesome, so that's puts u in the minority. I have the beats studio and the B&W P3 both have excellent build quality but B&Ws sound better.

Apples ROI on From Beats will be quick.

Sennheiser is better but not miles better, I've seen plenty of kids on the train with multiple brands of headphones. As for iOS users trying out Android I don't see the point. For what most people do on their smartphones either OS will do. Why would a iOS user give up the Apple ecosystem that they are most likely heavily invested in.

It was more of a general point.

A number of a factors can build up brand loyalty, and that brand loyalty often results in them making sub-optimal purchasing decisions because they know no better.

People buy and will always buy certain brands blindly because of fallacies such as 'They're more expensive so they must be better' or 'A celebrity that I like uses brand x so they must be good', and will dismiss other brands without trying them, even to the point of evangelizing about them. That could be beats, or Nike, Bose. Everyone is guilty of it to some degree.

Either way, it's worked for Beats, that same fervent brand loyalty has worked for Apple, and no doubt it will do in the future.

lol, Beats has no worthwhile patents. they're Beats.

Yes. Yes. They are a worthless company. Sorry, I forgot.

The comments on here rage from roflol to disturbing. Some of you act as if Apple is above Dr. Dre.

Such short memories.... You forgot Steve Jobs himself consulted with Dre back in itunes' infancy about getting rap artists to join itunes.

Steve seems to have though him important enough to include him in an Apple event (via video chat)

Love them or hate them, Beats headphones are a lifestyle product - an image catering to the youth and hip-hop markets. People who are truly into audio gear won't give a seconds thought to them.

I could care less what Apple does with its cash hoard. But you people need to realize, for all the bitching here about how Steve Jobs would never blah blah blah - the man is dead. The end. It doesn't matter what he would or wouldn't do. It's no longer in his hands.

And stop the line in the sand talk, too, about how if this acquisition is true, you aren't buying another Apple product. You know you'll be right back on the rumor sites come Aug/Sept trying to see when the next iPhones are out, or getting in line for the next Mac Mini refresh.

Can this story really be important enough to keep you tossing and turning in bed at night?

Crap quality

So this has people talking about how crappy the Beats are and they are crap lets be honest. But than people come and say how much better Bose or JBL are lol. Seriously people Bose is just as crap. You want serious headphones get Sennheiser or Beyerdynamics.
On the streaming side of this purchase I think they may have made a good choice. They can just rebrand it and use it within in iTunes. But I absolutely agree with most people here that the Beats are crap.

To be more specific the build quality is awesome but the speakers of crap. It would not take much to audiophile quality parts into beats.

Seriously, everything from build quality to sound quality is crap with beats. If one wants build and sound quality with bass then something like Atomic Floyd is million times better option.

This isn't about the money, Apple makes $3.2 billion cash in 5 weeks time. It's about the hit to their image.

Yes, teaming up with a company that owns 70% of the $100+ headphone market and is endorsed by artists from every genre will definitely destroy the Apple image.

Disney bought LucasFilm for $4 billion.

Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion.

Apple bought Beats for $3.2 billion.

Yes.

With Marvel franchise, Disney has already recouped the whole investment less than 5 years later. I don't know the exact terms of the deal, but Disney has already released four Marvel movies under its Buena Vista studio, and they grossed over US$ 4 billion in box office so far, with a combined budget of about US$ 750 million (excluding marketing costs). And that doesn't even include merchandising and DVD/blu-ray sales. There are more films in the pipeline. Looks like the best deal ever.

And something similar is probably going to happen with Lucas Film.

As for Beats... who knows?

What market? You mean the over priced under achieving getto fabulous headphone market. It might be working in States but it surely ain't global phenomenon.

I work for a company that sells beats and trust me I see so many being returned because people hatred the sound or they broke.

I think I already specified what market. In fact it's in the post that you quoted.
