No wonder Spotify is screaming and kicking today.
Watch Kanye try to launch his next album exclusively on Tidal, right before this acquisition is finalized
They are after the exclusives and as a bonus eliminating another player in the game. This will secure more exclusive content. Like others have said, this is a big power play. The Google+Youtube/Apple Music duopoly is now underway.

Are you serious? Tidal isn't competition for anyone. The only service Apple needs to worry about is Spotify. And Apple Music was such an abortion at launch that I cancelled my subscription and switched to Spotify.
I hope so. FLAC audio on lightning headphones must sound nice.

If this goes through, I wonder if the effect will be a sea change in the streaming music market space. 
Not sure why Apple need to buy anyone in order to offer lossless audio. They could just do it.

A Tidal spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that Tidal executives had not held talks with Apple, and the terms of the deal are unknown
It probably means they're discussing things informally, between people that know each other already, rather than any official discussions. It's only exploratory, after all.

Agree that is "the point," but serious wonder if that will be the result given Apple still can't get Music right. And now they want to merge or manage another service? Seems messy. And if Jay-Z is part of the deal will that be too many egos in the kitchen or will Jay-Z, Dre, and Iovine play nice together?
And last, buying subscribers is usually a growth method when organic growth has flattened, not when its ramping up. Seems odd to buy 4.2M subscribers at this point. Certainly Apple could just start offering better quality streams and siphon off some of Tidal's subscribers, as well as from other services or hold outs. Or does Apple think Music's growth has flattened and are trying to resuscitate it?
Why does he get ******* on, for helping out his good friend, instead of going to apple? Even though, going with Apple would have gotten him way more money.
