It's no secret that Jay Z wants to sell. It's the only way he'll get a quick profit. From an Artist/Exclusivity standpoint, Spotify would be dead. This is all power play.

Many startups' sole purpose is to develop something only to be bought out. Then they go and start something new. I would not be surprised if that was Tidal's goal all along... to be bought by Apple.

Backed up does not mean driven by. RAPPERS rule the music world these days. I'm not against it or in favor of it. I'm just stating the facts.

Do they offer any "exclusive" rock, jazz or classical content there?
Does anyone offer exclusives for those genres anywhere?

The problem is that Apple will grossly overpay for this. The only reason Apple is considering making this purchase is for the worst reason to do so in the first place. They are willing to take a loss to placate to certain demographics and in their eyes get into the "subculture". I would love to see the apple beats balance sheet...

Is it possible that the infrastructure is what they are after?

1. Are they for sale?
2. Would there be monopoly concerns with absorbing such big hitters?
Absolutely. Also depends on the market share of Apple Music + the acquired company.
With Spotify, the result would be absolute monopoly and I doubt it would be allowed.
With Tidal though, unsure.
There's a formula out there to compute whether or not an anti trust suit could be brought forward:
Herfindahl-Hirschman

Who's Jay-Z? Never heard of him. Must be some of that new "CD" stuff. "Tidal"? Sounds like a wave. Something that comes and mostly goes. Why does Apple need another wave? Mavericks was quite enough, thank you. When will they get back to doing the only thing that I care about, whatever that is, rather than trying "new stuff" that's unfamiliar to me but "kids" "pay for"?
Missing /s sarcasm tag?

The way this thread is going, I'm convinced that most MacRumors readers know next to nothing about HiFi.

Steve Jobs was an audiophile, and we know he has discussed with Neil Young about introducing HiFi music to iTunes before he died. Since Tidal offers lossless music, it makes perfect sense for Apple to acquire the company.

Why does Apple need Tidal to offer lossless music? That is one exclusive Tidal doesn't have. If Apple wanted to offer it they could reach a deal with the music labels fairly easily, I'm sure. Question really is, if Apple buys Tidal will it go all-in on lossless audio or will it put Jay-Z on the Apple payroll, assign Tidal's exclusive licenses to Apple Music, and shutter Tidal?

Wow! Apple executives must really love RAP music! They are investing massive amount of money in anything related to this music style.

It's kind of interesting to think that many of these artists have written so much homophobic or sexist stuff.

Before you comment on my post, let me say I don't dislike RAP music or the RAP culture. It's just not favorite.
Hip-Hop, pop and R&B are the language of the youth. Turn to any modern hits radio station and see for yourself. Apple executives are mostly old, white men and likely couldn't care less. I mean, have you seen how Eddy sways to hip music when he's demoing on stage?

It's also why they had a young, trendy, black woman demo the revised Apple Music during WWDC. Rap is how one targets the youth and future generations, and Apple is in the business of big business.

Sounds like a good move to me. In buying Tidal, Apple would get:

1. Access to high quality lossless audio streaming. (this will also be an opportunity to push their Beats headphones brand)

2. They will have Dr. Dre, Jimmy and Jay-Z on their team which will make them a very powerful force in the music industry. Having Jay-Z's next album (or the long rumored duet album with Beyonce) exclusive to Apple would be a HUGE advantage. Not to mention, access to the music catalog from other artist which Tidal has exclusive rights to.

Look to the future Apple...streaming music is the present, not the future. You're falling behind

Yeah, you're officially old and are completely irrelevant to society. You may sway in your rocking chair in peace, now.
Hey buddy. People don't have to like the same thing that you like. Based on your language you must be a RAPPER too! Cause that's what they do. They are motivated by hate. They hate da police, they hate women, they hate LGBT, and they also hate each other. Calm down my friend. One day you will also become a mature person (or old as you said) and you will realize that hate is not a good thing.

You don't understand sarcasm...

Great news only closer to having Lossless audio to come sooner to Apple Music and yeah Tidal was a big fail and Jay-z thought a high price streaming was a win lol than talking **** about Apple.

The point is to:
(a) acquire an immediate increase of 4.2M paying subscribers - nearly half of those subscribers are willing to shell out $20 monthly for higher quality music
(b) decrease the competitive landscape
(c) strengthen ties with recording artists.
(d) this plays into Apple's rumored decision to forgo 3.5mm headphone jack for lightning - I asked in another thread what would be the advantage of lightning when all of Apple's music is standard quality. Tidal sort of answers that question nicely. Probably leading to tiered Apple music plans. $9.99 for standard. $14.99 for hifi. $14.99 standard family. $19.99 hifi family.

i hope this happens. i like both tidal and apple music. i like the way tidal puts emphasis on video and some of their exclusives. i like being able to tell siri to play music. if apple can absorb tidal in a way that makes my music experience better, i am all for it.
