And then the Ferrari team would suffer all sorts of tech and software glitches that would brick the cars or cause constant need to restart the engine. It'll be Apple vs. Google taken up a notch.

Umm have you heard about Italian build quality?

It is nothing short of horrific. Fiat (their parent company) is commonly known as Fix It Again Tony

Once Purchased the car line will be renamed to MacLaren - with the trim lines being mini, Air, Pro, and Plus. :D

Aston Martins are the most beautiful cars known to man. Killer picture ;)

And, man, they sure can make a turbocharged engine sound GOOD!

edit - If an acquisition by Apple means that McLaren will abandon their core business and stop making supercars, then this is the worst news (rumor, I know) I've heard in a while. I hope it'd just be for the technology, without affecting the day-to-day of McLaren.

That could never happen. Look how Apple has remained focused on the product lines of their roots. Oh... wait.... McLaren watch band anyone????

Now that looks like a really nice combination of companies. Mclaren have been on a roll lately and they've got some very smart people working there..

Love this bit of news

Does this mean Samsung will now buy Porsche? They've both had problems with some of their products catching fire.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

And to be fair I think far more Ferraris catch on fire than the few new gen GT3s that did before they recalled them for the fix.

Two companies with many similarities.

Their headquarters is just one of them - a beautiful minimalist building designed by Sir Norman Foster, the guy behind Apple Campus 2.

My theory is that it's got little to do with cars, and more to do with materials prowess.

F1 teams know how to wield carbon fibre better than anyone else in the world, along with plenty of other exotic materials. They also make their items to incredible tolerances. Very much like Apple

So they are simply acquiring McLaren for their smarts, not for anything else? Sounds like Apple wants McLaren talent, meaning they will probably shutter the company after it's acquired. Boo and hiss on that! It would make much more sense for AAPL to buy TSLA - they will have a ready platform, just need to write the software. But TSLA is much more expensive than McLaren, because you know, TSLA actually has a mainstream product to sell.

Unless Apple is looking to sell 1,654 per YEAR, it will not use McLaren as a platform on which to base the Apple Car. I would think the likely situation would lean toward the "strategic investment" side of the equation as opposed to the "wholesale rebranding" side.

if this happens, it guarantees that 99% of people here will never be able to afford an Apple car

What would be the point of Apple doing that? There are a whole host of reasons Apple might be considering acquiring them, e.g., hybrid technology, fabrication, etc., but the least likely of all is that they want to produce enormously expensive cars that only a very few people can afford.

Fashion shows and F1 races ... the Apple gang will be busy ... next up ... a couple of new Bombardier Global jets to ferry the gang around.

Please dear god NO!!!

McLaren is a company about purity; obsessed about creating the best, fastest and insane driving experience ever. Apple is everything BUT that!
