So this essentially means it is going to a 6 figure+ car out of reach for the average joe. The only way an Apple Car will succeed is if it is mass produced and affordable for the majority.

Also this is a British company, keep your hands off!

Not necessarily.

The line could evolve to include autos that would be within reach of Apple's customers. I don't think Apple's end goal is to manufacture exotic supercars for their base.

do you get a free 2015 macbook pro with the purchase of a mclaren?
Yes, but it'd only come with a 256GB hard drive which you cannot upgrade unless you buy two Mclarens which then come with a mbp with a 512GB hard drive which you can then upgrade to 1TB for £400 plus the 500GB hard drive it initially comes with.
Frikkin bargain.

You already know the case-makers are ramping up production for a case. Gotta put a f***ing case on everything. I imagine someone driving around in their Apple MacClaren Jet Black with an Otterbox on lmao.

Dam.. I hope it becomes a reality... Fernando Alonso and the team needs a push and Apple may be what they need to become more competitiveve. Besides is a good promotional platform for Apple products.

I've only seen one comment on it: CARBON FIBER. It's the key to making future cars light...and McLaren holds some very important patents on carbon fiber production including some that greatly reduce the complexity (and therefore cost) of creating carbon fiber.

I suspect Gordon Murray and his T.27 project is the real acquisition target here.

My bet is Apple will take a hands off approach to Mclaren, but throw a couple of billion at Murray's clever manufacturing technology to make a small electric city car based on the T.25/T.27 concept (but a lot less ugly!)

This makes sense.

People always say Apple should by Tesla. That would be a stupid purchase since Tesla doesn't have any unique technology. Everything they do all the other automakers can also do.

Mclaren, on the other hand, has an extensive portfolio of IP related to advanced automotive technology (like carbon and composite construction).

Bingo. Apple isn't going to make super cars. They're going to bring technology from super cars to something people can afford.

No, get Aston Martin! "Power. Beauty. Soul. It Just Works." :D

This could be one of the worst suggestions I've seen on this forum. AM is an absolute garbage automobile manufacturer. Their cars are pants stretching beautiful. There's no doubt about it. The build quality? The quality is damn near laughable. Laughable is an understated kindness. Sweet Jeebus the depreciation, the constant maintenance, and... no, just no. AM's are only good for short leases and magazine spreads.

Bad Carlos. You're in timeout.:p:D

Owning an Aston is like marrying the prom queen only to find out she's a meth head.

So they are simply acquiring McLaren for their smarts, not for anything else? Sounds like Apple wants McLaren talent, meaning they will probably shutter the company after it's acquired. Boo and hiss on that! It would make much more sense for AAPL to buy TSLA - they will have a ready platform, just need to write the software. But TSLA is much more expensive than McLaren, because you know, TSLA actually has a mainstream product to sell.

Not sure I agree with the answer, but at least somebody finally asked the right question. Why, exactly, would Apple want to own McLaren, of all companies? If they own technology and patents, then it what way would they apply to an Apple automotive project? Isn't that the real question?

As for Tesla, it clearly isn't for sale.
