Holy crap!!! YES!... Mclaren - Honda - Apple! Alonso did well last week, and the engine is coming around. No more of this development tokens nonsense next F1 season and some Apple's money and they up there competing with RedBull And Scuderia

OK... Project Titan just got a whole lot more interesting. I, for one, am immensely excited about the prospect of an Apple car, or at least an Apple collaboration car, especially with the likes of McLaren (McLaren Honda F1 is no joke, and hopefully Honda gets in on this partnership!! The new NSX is a technological marvel of a car, haters notwithstanding). I mean, all this could theoretically amount to nothing in the end. However, I think it's just as possible that Apple really shakes up the transportation industry, similar to how they shook up the mobile industry starting with iPhone.

Seriously? Wow. I was in a McLaren showroom couple of weeks ago. Seriously nice cars but not exactly mass market.

I can already imagine their car: No buttons. And to restart it, you will have to honk and flash the lights.

clearly you've never owned a British automobile... ;)

I had a '71 Triumph GT6+

I have a friend who works there. I wonder if there's going to be the usual round of layoffs following the acquisition.
Where, Apple or McLaren?

Aston Martins are the most beautiful cars known to man. Killer picture ;)

And, man, they sure can make a turbocharged engine sound GOOD!

edit - If an acquisition by Apple means that McLaren will abandon their core business and stop making supercars, then this is the worst news (rumor, I know) I've heard in a while. I hope it'd just be for the technology, without affecting the day-to-day of McLaren.
I disagree. Worst thing is, they all look the same. Much prefer a Zonda.

McLaren says it's not in talks with Apple. So the tech press got an hour or so of buzz around this...

If I had to guess this is more likely an exchange. Apple sponsor the F1 team, and McLaren Automative and McLaren AT provide technical assistance and ECU hardware (as McLaren currently provide all the F1 teams with their ECU's).

This would make more sense then Apple buying McLaren outright.

Seriously have to doubt this rumor, McLaren is only worth 1.5 billion so it's too small to bother investing in and they have no mass production experience which Apple must have in order to turn a profit.

Why and how would they? Apple is not stupid. They know that McLaren is a company with a history and masses of expertise. No-one within Apple will be stupid enough to think they can tell McLaren how to produce and design cars. Maybe we should have a bit more open mind as opposed to thinking we know everything or let cynicism guide our thought processes.
If there's one thing we can be sure of, is Apple's "courage" to do what they think is right and to hell with popular opinion.

Ahhh, come on now. ;) Yes, McLarens vehicles are all similar. But you're not about to tell me that Pagani's cars don't all look the same, too? I love the Zonda, like you. But Pagani has been building off of that exact same design for over 15 years! Even the Huayra is similar.

Just like the swiss watch makers did when Apple approached them. Now their sales are dropping like a rock. Who's laughing now.

Not saying it won't hurt them, just saying it would tarnish their brand a bit. It is obvious smart watches and traditional watches are not of the same category. One is considered classy, the other is considered techy.

I really don't get why people thought Apple would buy McLaren. There is absolutely zero sense in that acquisition. McLaren doesn't produce mass market cars and there is nothing groundbreaking that McLaren does with cars. On top of that, McLaren operates at a loss, not something Apple would be willing to buy because there is nothing that it can offer to them.

I thought I was replying about Aston Martin actually, (with their Mondeo switchgear and all).

Afterwards is always easy to say "I knew it better" - isn't it?
