Now they just need to slide in and pick up VW while it's cheap and they've got the ability to mass produce.

This is just part of the deal to make Ives stick around. He wants to design a car, so they are acquiring a McLaren and installing him as their new chief designer...

This is like a match made in heaven. Both make beautiful, desirable products that are designed to be used up to four years.

Would you like to have your car (Rose Gold, of course) with
- 32HP ($19.990)
- 128HP ($29.990)
- 256HP ($39.990)
Recharged with Lightning cable. Non reparable. If the car breaks, you take it to Apple and they give you new. And pray for your Apple care is still valid.

So... rumours of the Apple Car's death are greatly exaggerated?

And designing (and manufacturing) a car turned out to be harder than Jony Ive thought?

It already even comes in Rose Gold

I have a friend who works there. I wonder if there's going to be the usual round of layoffs following the acquisition.
Seriously doubt it. More likely a huge injection into what is now the ultimate niche line.

Unlikely. Layoffs happen when there are any synergies to be created, but these don´t exist between Apple and McLaren. IF Apple does this, then it is about creating new markets, so likely employment should increase as a consequence.

That goes to prove what many have long assumed. Apple is not just interested in any car. They want the 1%. It's high-end sports cars or nothing. They may talk about 'the little car', but in reality, they just want want fast! In short, Apple is race-ist!

[...]McLaren has a Formula One team itself that competes under the name McLaren Honda, winning more F1 grand prix races than any other team since 1966.

Really? I guess it really depends how you see the stats: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_constructors
On the one hand, no one except for Ferrari is longer active in the Formula 1, and they won more races than McLaren.

If you look at how many races McLaren took part in and won, you get: 794 races ~ 182 wins = They win every 4.36th race.

If you look at how many races Ferrari took part in and won, you get: 922 races ~ 224 wins = They win every 4.11th race.

So Ferrari is more successful than McLaren. I don't know how many races were won since 1966, but if you look at statistics this way, you might as well find out if any other team was more successful during their period (e.g Mercedes Williams since 1978).

For the love of God, no!.... Don't let Apple ruin McLaren

Why and how would they? Apple is not stupid. They know that McLaren is a company with a history and masses of expertise. No-one within Apple will be stupid enough to think they can tell McLaren how to produce and design cars. Maybe we should have a bit more open mind as opposed to thinking we know everything or let cynicism guide our thought processes.

Apple has approached British luxury carmaker and Formula One team McLaren about a potential acquisition, likely to be valued at between $1.3 billion and $1.9 billion, according to Financial Times.

Apple is reportedly considering a full takeover of McLaren, or a strategic investment in the company, likely in an effort to bolster its widely rumored automotive project. Apple is said to be interested in McLaren's automotive-related technology, engineering prowess, and patent portfolio.McLaren, headquartered in Woking, Surrey, manufactures high-performance sports cars, including the P1 and F1 models commonly used for racing. The carmaker produced just 1,654 vehicles last year, some costing as much as $1 million apiece. McLaren has a Formula One team itself that competes under the name McLaren Honda, winning more F1 grand prix races than any other team since 1966.

Apple has reportedly laid off dozens of employees as it seeks to repurpose its secretive automotive project, now believed to fall under the leadership of longtime Apple executive Bob Mansfield. At time, it was said that Apple is focusing more heavily on developing underlying technologies for autonomous vehicles, perhaps allowing it to partner with or purchase an automaker like McLaren in the future.

Formula One itself was sold to U.S.-based Liberty Media for $4.4 billion earlier this month.
