Honestly, I don’t mean to flame you but you sound just like the people who were in denial when Netflix started the same thing.

Denial about what? Netflix still offers both ad-free and ad-supported plans. It may be “worse” if ad-free went away completely and ad-supported plans were the only options but that’s not the case.

Apple is working on the introduction of advertisements on Apple TV+ in the United Kingdom, according to The Telegraph.

Apple has apparently been in discussions with the UK's Broadcaster's Audience Research Board (BARB) to explore the necessary data collection techniques for monitoring advertising results. Currently, BARB provides viewing statistics for major UK networks including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky, as well as Apple TV+ programming. These new discussions suggest that Apple is preparing to implement an ad-supported tier on its streaming service, similar to moves made by competitors such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

While BARB already monitors viewing time for Apple TV+ content, additional techniques are required to track advertising metrics accurately. This data is vital for advertisers to assess the reach and impact of their campaigns on the platform. In addition to the UK, Apple has also reportedly held similar discussions with ratings organizations in the United States.

Apple has already included limited advertising in its live sports events, such as last year's Major League Soccer coverage, where ads were incorporated even for Season Pass holders. It is also notable that in March Apple hired Joseph Cady, a former advertising executive from NBCUniversal, to bolster its video advertising team.

Competitors like Netflix and Disney+ have successfully launched lower-cost, ad-supported tiers, which have helped them attract additional subscribers and increase revenue. For instance, Netflix recently reported record revenues, partly due to a 34% increase in subscribers to its ad-supported tier. The push towards an ad-supported tier comes at a time when Apple is reportedly reducing its spending on Apple TV+ content after investing over $20 billion in original programming.

Fine, I guess, but..

Does a company with more *cash* on hand than some countries really need to cheapen its brand like this?

Does every waking minute of our lives need advertising?

My favorite parts of ATV+ was how every show needed to have a minute long intro sequence, and the fact that recaps and intros couldn't be skipped automatically. Also the fact that I couldn't disable auto-play of the next episode.

I've just checked my tv+ and on my next queued episode of For All Mankind I was given 3 skip buttons:

  • 'Skip' (to skip the screen promoting the show's podcast)
  • 'Skip Recap'
  • 'Skip Intro'
I know you're likely to argue about the definition of 'automatically' but I'd say a button that gives you the 1-click ability to skip that section versus having to inefficiently scrub manually is automatically (plus it's flexible if you do want to watch one or all of those elements).

Regarding the Auto-Play feature, this is where Apple's User Guide helps!

I'll just end up buying the episodes like I did before. I really do not understand consumers just accepting the advertisements. I wouldn't have an issue with the advertisements if they were good. So far it's either a repeat of the same four times in a row or so or the ad causes the app to stop working properly. At this point I think I'll just rejoin cable and forget about cutting the cord. Maybe I'll just stop watching TV and go back to reading books. Until they have the ability to ad an advertisement into that.....I will never understand how companies think we the consumer want ads..

The plan was always to jack up the prices. And it’s going to happen here as well. I suspect Apple may not be pleased with the end result because Apple TV+, frankly, is much more expendable to most of the population than services like Netflix.

Plan? Netflix had already been raising prices for many years even before they offered an ad-supported plan. Price increases were nothing new at Netflix with or without ad plans.

soon we're gonna just see ads on everything, start up your Mac, AppleTV, iPhone, ads. not just browser popups or spam email just another layer of the OS. this is dumb. what do they need ads for?

That is a totally separate discussion that has zero to do with the AppleTV+ service

Doesn't belong anywhere in this topic
Oh… I just realized that tvOS UI has plenty of potential advertising space. Just you wait. If nothing else they can always force it to play 300 s of ads every time you hit play on anything in any app

It just takes one brave move from one CEO. I guess Microsoft already took the baby step on windows. And getting a PC without bloat ware isn’t easy.

Apple made the first move on the charger. We had one year of Samsung running ads mocking Apple for that and then they followed.

It just takes one CEO

You know what you can do with your ads. I was about to sign up for Apple TV+ but now I won't go near it with a ten foot pole. Ad supported tv is free

In general I watch about 1 hour of TV a month. I prefer to read books and do hobbies out in my shed, no adverts there and never will be.
Last time I checked there were no trackers, data miners, etc there too.

A great point! Look at those big juicy empty "tiles" just ready for rotating ADs if you don't "unlock" the Ad-Free version

Apple could jump on the old Amazon "Kindle with Special Offers" train!

Ad supported tv is free

It is? I guess Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Netflix, etc. didn't get the memo. The reality is that a subscription pay/ad hybrid model has been the norm for content delivery for ages including television, newspapers, and magazines. At least with various streaming services, they offer subscribers the CHOICE of going with ads or ad-free.

I know it'll probably not happen, but I'd love for Apple to split the tv into two distinct lines, and have a more sleek premium model finished in Space Black aluminium, with a weighted braided cable. Then make the current/standard model considerable less expensive to broaden the customer base.

Lowering the price could help, but the lower price options on the market have so many hidden costs Apple could probably keep the price the same if they just marketed the AppleTV like they cared that it existed?

The lower priced options on the market are subsidized by the data their manufactures collect about their customers then sell...

Add to that the number of big box stores that sell "installation service" for ~$50/box that amounts to nothing more than plugging it into power and HDMI and walking away... sometimes they may connect it to wifi.. maybe... (the total price of a slow as molasses in January "affordable" Roku after that bull-butter is HIGHER than a refurb AppleTV... can't make this ish up...)

Apple could probably expand their market more by promoting the privacy angle (They know everything you're watching you dirty dirty boy!) and how easy it is to get setup and streaming.

But, let's be real.

Apple will probably never do either of those things.

Soon, we all will.
Except I don’t. I get whatever comes with prime but otherwise have zero streaming service subscriptions.

Edit: and to be clear I don’t use prime and wouldn’t notice or miss it if the streaming piece suddenly vanished.
