How does a company sitting on a trillion dollars of cash fall so far behind in the AI race? Genuine question. Did everything go into that absolute FLOP of a product known as Vision Pro?
Under Cook APPL stock is their most important product.

In 2023 for example the AI/ML team wanted to spend $10B to double the amount of AI compute available. Cook approved BUT the Finance team said "No". They had to rent cloud AI compute from Google (their competitor). All while sitting on $150B in cash and doing $77.5B in stock buybacks that same year. Shows both who's really in charge (Finance) and where the company's true focus lies (stock price).

That's Apple Intelligence. We STILL do not have what we were promised. Unreal Apple, unreal.

And yet people "believe Apple" on so many other things they say ... why?

They continue to string everyone along on this, and many other topics.

Tim has completely lost the benefit of the doubt in my view.

I’d much rather the user gets to choose the provider here. Maybe some want google? Maybe some want ChatGPT? Maybe others want to run their own?

In the end, they are going to sell us and our data out for a deal with one provider. Leaves us stuck with who they choose. So tired of the hostility towards users from all these tech companies - Apple included.

Google/Apple have a vested interest in keeping things as the status quo. They do NOT want other companies like OpenAI to become a big player in the space. They want less competition, not more.

Makes sense, Google is fast outpacing everyone in this space and Apple can't keep up.. If you can't beat them, join them. If it all runs locally and privately with Apple security I feel much better about it.. Also feel much better then leveraging OpenAI's crap that Sam Altman pushes, just ultimate sleeze right there...

This isn’t as much about the provider as it is their models are beginning to diversify and be stronger with different use cases. That specialization will continue, leaving some generic models for general consumption like chat and others deeper in specific disciplines such as scientific modeling or IaaS. What is happening right now is an open api system is being developed to enable agentic AI. This will allow the functionality described earlier in this thread by name99 which was an excellent post. I completely disagree with him on Apple’s strategic position in this though because Apple will fall on their sword before they embrace open systems of any kind (think blue bubbles) as its not only an aberration to the core identity of the company, it’s antithetical to their business model.

I've been saying it for the last 10 years, Tim Cook needs to go. He destroyed what Apple was. Apple led with Siri, now they're a joke and need Google to bail them out.

Personally, I'd like to see apple develop their own LLM, just my two cents...

but with the recent news of personnel defections / talent poaching it doesn't sound like apple is paying enough to retain the best software engineers to do the work?

well well

Does Tim Cook really hate Elon so much that’s he’d rather partner with the tech devil than temporarily lean on Grok until Apple Intelligence can stand on its own? 🤔
Apple Intelligence will never be able to stand on its own, they neglected research for too long and now they have accumulated a technological gap that will never be filled, especially considering the few employees having some knowledge in the topic are being poached by other companies. That being said grok and musk are toxic at this point, Apple should stay clear.

I think you know the story here ... we can't really talk about it in more detail as we aren't in the political news area.

This makes sense. There's no way that Apple could catch up with its own AI in a reasonable timeframe. Gemini is pretty good and Google has access to a ton of date to keep improving it so I have no problem with it

All it would take is some branding advertising and people would get it.
By calling it simply “Gemini”, it will do so many things for their users, Google will drop AI terminology, personifying its marketing and features. Just ask Gemini. Same for Siri, the use of terminologies like AI and artificial intelligence won’t be needed. Better to start off as they mean to go on.
