This is great news, but I hope this doesn't further isolate the millions of devices out there still with 1GB of RAM.

I'm aware that this doesn't mean the running app will be 4GB, but it's possible down the road that the app size itself could be large and not just the assets in the package.

The limit is not Apple but the carriers.

I am not so sure that is true. According to this link, it appears Android phones have been able to download large files over cellular since ~March 2012. The user has to explicitly approve such action though (each time too there is no remembering the setting).

There are hardly many useful apps that clock over 2 gigs.

But that 100mb OTA limit is really busting my balls. Or well busted.
Because recently I really really needed to install iWork apps and couldn't over my data which was 10x faster than the wifi that was available (hotel wifi)

True...They could bring anything back. But I really don't think they will drop 16 and bring back 32 as a base. And I don't see them keeping the 16, 64, 128 for too much longer. With photo files getting larger, apps getting bigger, and people wanting access to all of their content instantly, 16 is becoming more and more useless. Even 32 only has maybe a year or 2 before it's in the same boat as 16.
Usefulness isn't really what they go by, otherwise 16 GB would have already been gone, and there wouldn't be 8 GB models at all (or at least not for some time now).

Games? What about apps for PRODUCTIVITY?

And this goes for iPads, too.

Spent $500 for an iPad with 16GB and cannot load new apps or update iOS due to their sizes. Why can we not increase the storage size?

----------

For those who make $15 and hour, this is NOT an option.

That iPhone 4 was bought for $99, btw.
Productivity apps aren't even close to hitting the old limit, let alone this new one. As for increasing storage size, the option is there when buying the device essentially.

So those with an 8Gb device and less than 6GB usable can install 1 app, those with a 16GB and 12gb usuable space can install 3 apps.

i see the lawsuits about 16gb iPhones not really being 16gb being re-opened

not that i care, i find that the apps i have now are the apps i have had since the iPhone app store launched, i dont play games on my phone,

We're getting to the point where there really should be a switch to override cellular restrictions. I have a 20GB data plan. Sometimes I want to do bandwidth heavy things on cellular! Hell, sometimes my cellular connection is FASTER than the available Wifi.

If I go over and have to pay overages, it's my fault, not Apple's. Give us an override switch!

This! My data is currently unlimited. If I wanna download a 1GB game via Verizon's LTE, I should be able to. I, just like you, dont need Apple telling me that the app is too big and I should use wifi.

While Apple Inc. announced the increase in app size limit on its official developer website yesterday, it has in fact been accepting apps that exceed 2 GB in size since the start of 2015.

The 5c is already 8GB.

It doesn't seem like people even know they sell 8gb iPhones. There is a size below 16GB. If they haven't dropped 8 what makes you think they'll drop 16? Hopefully they drop 8 and replace it with 16, and replace 16 with 32 or 64.

Looks like they already dropped the "c" lineup entirely (no 6c) -- so maybe we don't have to worry about 8 anymore

Absolutely agree with the 100 Mb OTA limit, I'm very happy about the new 2 Gb maximum app size.
It makes room for new better apps.

----------

good luck putting that 4GB app on your 16GB iPhone

You can do that. Actually you can install a couple of that.
Btw if you are looking for 4 Gb apps and you bought a 16 Gb device, you are the one to blame, not Apple

Yes, YOU have a 20 Gb data plan, but I would say that most of us are still in the 1-2 Gb range....

----------

Wrong. Two.

iOS takes of a few Geebeez

You still have more than 12 Gb free, so three are theoretically installable.

----------

If they dropped the 16, the base model would be 64. 32 is already gone. Time to move to 64, 128, 256. 16gig is pretty much useless if you want to keep any kind of content on your device.

256 Gb ? The iPhone basically is the only one at offering a 128 Gb option, and one of the few 64 Gb. 256 Gb is unreasonable expectation....

----------

yet they still sell 16gb phones....

And they still don't force you to buy the base model, if you need 4 Gb apps.... Your choice. In my 64 Gb iPhone I can install several apps...

Do you really think productivity apps are more than 2 Gb big ?
Only games, only games...

----------

Now Apple can no longer ship a 16GB iPhone

Reality check: there are people basically using the iPhone for web browsing, whatsapp, mail and some photos. For them, 16 Gb are more than enough.

Or it's every other year like the S phones. They're not going to make something that sounds like it's a refined iPhone 6.

That's what they would do if they wanted to continue the "C" line anyway. But they can still put the iPhone 5s in it's place with 8GB, like the 4S was.

Yes, its possible the 6c would be a rebadged 5s with maybe some small mods to make a bit more like the 6 internally (same camera and touch Id module for example).

Or they can install none of these apps (Big Games) and install dozens of smaller apps (the usual size of an app if under 100MB) and have 500 songs too. Hey, see all is good. They could also probably put 2 or 3 , 2G+ games in there if they don't put anything else.

I hope this means that apps will naturally be larger and basic iPhone models come in 32GB, at the minimum.

Ditto for the ipads as well. 16GB is just inadequate and has been even before this announcement. Even if they bumped prices by $50 bucks and started with 64GB, that'd be OK.

How about a new storage lineup of: 64, 128, & 256? Tell me that wouldn't be sweet? :D. Plus, it reduces the overall number of devices they have to produce. Just three versions of each plus the cell models for the ipads. Perfect.

Its a nice move and will allow more complex games but as so many people stated, if you don't have a higher end (read more storage) phone, its going to hamper more then help you.

Vast majority don't even come close to the old 2 GB limit so this likely won't change anything for any of thsose.
