These limits are the max file size limit for the .ipa that is pushed from the App Store. The .ipa is actually a zip file so when extracted on the device on install it'll be larger. Compression efficiency varies but 50% is reasonable. So with the previous 2 GB limit, the effective max size of an app on device on initial install is around 3 GB. Apps can then download additional data post-install so things grow from there.

So with the new 4 GB max .ipa size from the App Store, the new effective max app size on device on initial install is something like 6 GB. That's pretty comparable to Xbox 360 games that ship on 1 dual layer DVD. In fact, early Xbox 360 games reserved a substantial amount of disc space for DRM, so 1 dual layer DVD only have 6.8 GB available for game content. With this new 4 GB .ipa size and the A8X in the iPad Air 2 legitimately comparable to the Xbox 360 CPU/GPU, the technical capabilities are now in place for the often claimed "console-quality" game albeit previous-gen equivalent and presuming you can make a financial case of course.

As for Disney infinity Toy Box, it was probably a trial run for the new 4 GB .ipa size.

3 x 4GB = 12GB, leaving roughly 3-4GB for iOS. That should be enough.

Wrong. 2.

By the time the user adds a few pics and/or takes a few pics/videos, its 2.

The approx. capacity of free space from a 16GB iPhone is 12.4GB stock.

Or if they have any iOS updates, which requires hundreds of MBs you are at 2 again.

Or if they do any sort of backup/restore, they likely wont even get 2.

Now get rid of 16gig base models and start at 64.

Somehow I don't see Apple keep the price of 16GB for 32G if they did change the base model. I have no clue why ordinary people would buy 16G, for me 64 is always the base model. Either you get 64 or 128. 16 model is for niche use only (eg. specific work purposes, medical equipment, etc).

We're getting to the point where there really should be a switch to override cellular restrictions. I have a 20GB data plan. Sometimes I want to do bandwidth heavy things on cellular! Hell, sometimes my cellular connection is FASTER than the available Wifi.

If I go over and have to pay overages, it's my fault, not Apple's. Give us an override switch!

Out of interest, how much of that data do you actually get through in a given month?

So does this mean 16GB iPhones and especially iPads are going bye, bye this year or is that just wishful thinking?
so let's say goodbye to all 16GB iDevices..

Plenty of people don't really use many if any apps, and no games at all, or perhaps a few small games. Plenty of people mainly use the phone just to make calls, text, use email, browse the web here and there, and use a few apps to check on some scores or use some social networks. None of that requires much space and 16 GB is plenty for them.

You people really do blame everything on Apple. Your download speed is not controlled/affected by Apple. That is all attributed to your cellular/wifi speeds.
Plenty of times it is/can be Apple and how they are distributing something.

I don't think so it is always slower downloading anything from apple. even when downloading 0n wired connection it is not always faster.

This is one of the few times where someone can actually get away with saying it:

FINALLY.

4GB is still going to limit iOS gaming quality, but it's better than nothing. As someone with two 128GB devices, I welcome this change. My iPad Air 2 can theoretically run games about as well as the Xbox 360. Here's to hoping we keep getting higher-end games with controller support. It would be great to do some legitimate gaming while on break at work, lol. Or while staying at the inlaws…

32bit is limited in addressable memory to 2G.
So I'd say that this is Apple starting to show the benefits of 64bit.

That is complete nonsense, and you're going to confuse others with it. What you're referring to is that an address length of 32 bits can refer to 2^32 locations in hardware. It's more complicated than that, but I'm going to avoid that because I'll probably make a mistake somewhere 2^32 = 4294967296, which is actually around 4GB. Some of it would be reserved for system addresses though. 2^64 is a much much larger number, but neither refers to the maximum size of an app. First off the entire app may not be loaded into memory. There's no reason to load every texture needed for a game when it boots, and it would be a waste of resources. There are other problems, but they're beyond the scope of this. The important thing is that the size of a binary executable is isn't really relevant to the size of a memory address.

Yes! I agree! I've wanted this for a while.
I think it's ridiculous that I can connect my MacBook to my iPhone's hotspot and download a 100mb+ app, then sync it to my phone, but can't just download that app directly on my phone.

My 4G and 3G is actually faster than my home broadband.

They said I was crazy

"Why get a 128GB iPad Air", they said. "Stick with 32 or 64 and save some money" they said. But I got a 128 because I knew that everything would just get bigger and bigger over time. I knew I'd need it and I was right. Especially in a system that can't be upgraded later on, you should max it out from the start. Now Apps can be up to 4GB. I knew it was going to happen.
