Yeah that's very good and well for short term profits. Long term, Cook is alienating his users, which is extremely bad.

I understand that some people don't agree with Apple's decisions. I don't agree with all of them and can't imagine anyone would, but when the number of Apple customers is growing each year, and is so vast, how can you possibly say that "Cook is alienating his users." and it's "extremely bad"? What evidence do you have beyond the complaining you read on this forum?

Those users have lots of choices and Apple has the largest companies in the world, e.g., Google, Amazon, Samsung, offering competing services and products, yet this year, hundreds of millions of people the world over will choose Apple. There was much whining on MacRumors and elsewhere that Apple was making a big mistake by removing the iPhone 7 and angry consumers would reject it and that there would be a big decline in sales, yet the phone is selling extremely well and it is predicted that close to 200 million people will buy it this year. The only evidence that matters is what consumers do in the free market.

Every single blog on the internet that writes about Apples current state, and practically everyone I talk to about Apple that has even the slightest idea about the company.

Oh, and Apples dropping sales. If that's not good enough for you, nothing is.

You can't download movies to the ATV - it always streams them
Really, are you certain? When playing one recently it seemed to be downloading, giving a download time of 30+ minutes before it would start playing. It didn't seem to play until it was complete.

Lack of competition for ISPs. Many places only have one ISP and get screwed over.

I am lucky enough to have Comcast and FiOS where I live, many other people are stuck with one choice that has little incentive to please their customers.

Yep pretty much. For decent speeds there is not a lot of choice. I mean the the limit is high, 1 tb per month. But before I got new appletv my data was average of about 300 gb. Now I average 1.2 tb.

They do offer unlimited data for extra price.

Maybe it's time those customers bring a class action lawsuit against their ISP for price gouging.

It'll cache them using any available space (automatically deleting them as necessary) but there's no option to "download and keep on device" any media like you can on your other devices

Thanks for the advice! I was wondering if I'd need to manage the storage similar to when iPhone gets low. Good to know. Great avatar by the way! :)

Now this can finally be a good gaming system. They seem to have eliminated the remote requirement (Trials Frontier) and now this.

I hope more games get ported over. I have a lot I'd rather play on the big screen natively rather than AirPlay and take a hit on performance.

I'm not sure what's going on with APPLE. Many say that Apple has lost it.
Those "many" that say Apple has lost it, I assume they are referring to:

  • Now reaching nearly 100% of entire smart phone industry profits
  • Record setting App store sales, including $240 million in one day!
  • Record setting quarter for industry leading smart watch
  • Apple Services revenue alone just exceeded the entire revenue for all of Facebook, and is growing so fast that it will be the equivalent of a Fortune 100 company in 2017
  • Apple Pay zooming past Android Pay, Samsung Pay and others to own 75% of the market, adding 1 million users per week!
  • Apple Music starting last but moving to number 2 in less than two years and adding 1 million users a month!
  • Record setting initial sales of Macbook Pro
  • Apple now the largest seller of wireless headphones on the 3rd Rock from the sun!
  • Apple now owning 60% of the worldwide market for premium (+100$) headphones!
  • Airpods selling as fast as Apple can make them and already owning 26% of market!
  • Latest projection is for Apple to break record for revenue and earn ONE TRILLION dollars from iOS alone in 2017!
I could go on, but just wanted to make sure I was following correctly the main reasons to think Apple has lost it and why the Board will likely want to get rid of Tim Cook.

If only these things translated to a superior product.....

Having the best sales, the most money, the most popular OS, or having trendy products does not mean Apple has not "lost it" as the person you quoted has stated. There are plenty of other companies that have broken records, made lots of money, had a huge market share, but lost their way.

I remember when MS Windows fans would brag about how popular the OS was, and how many apps there was for it when compared to the Mac OS.

I hope more games get ported over. I have a lot I'd rather play on the big screen natively rather than AirPlay and take a hit on performance.

I do too, I am hoping for some retro games, or retro games re-mastered like the NES DuckTails game on the iSO and tvOS.

I wouldn't mind some of the newer ports too. I am curious how the ATV4 compares to recent games console. There were rumors in 2015 saying that ATV4 could do XBOX 360 games, although, that may have been if it used a newer A-processor.

Not exactly. Cook is (strictly IMO) alienating his hard core technology users. He's doing great with the general consumer and as much as I personally hate this... he's winning the game.
I agree, but this is still just short term, as a general consumer is harder to retain than a core base.

Well, that's the beauty of capitalism, of free markets, where consumers given free choice get to decide which are the superior products, not you or I or some pundit on a blog. You may think that there are superior smart phones than the iPhone, but hundreds of millions of people will disagree with you this year. Similarly, a lot of folks panned the Airpods and removal of the legacy headphone jack as too soon and well, the rest is history.

As for Microsoft, they argued that the Zune was superior to the iPod, and that their phones were superior to the iPhone, and as Apple found out with the Newton, the Lisa, etc., consumers get to ultimately decide if a company is on the right path or not.

After reading this thread, I can't find one compelling reason (if you're not into gaming) to upgrade my ATV 3 to ATV 4.

Will we ever know what Jobs meant when he said "I finally cracked it"...

I guess it depends on what you mean as superior. Sales, number of units sold, market share, and success of a company does not mean that their product is superior. There are many other factors that have little to do with the product it self. How about marketing? brand loyalty? brand recognition? Price? Cost? just to name a few.

Is the ChromeCast superior to the ATV 3 or 4? Is any version of OS X superior to the version of Windows of the same period? Is VHS superior to Betamax?

For non-tech products, take Fram oil filters. Fram sells a lot of them, are available everywhere, and they are very popular, but they are hardly superior to other brands, including OEM filters.

Sticking with the automotive products, look at motor oil, Castro, Pennzoil, and Super Tech all sell well, and are very popular. But would you consider them superior to AMSoil or Royal Purple? Any car guys on here can answer that.

Again, all this depends on what you consider superior.

It is kind of silly to say free markets determine what the superior product is (as in quality, value, performance), there are a crap load of examples showing the opposite.

Zune, Blackberry, Sony's Betamax, etc., etc. You don't seem to want to accept that everyone can have an opinion, but we sort that out in the marketplace. People may think they are smarter than everyone else, and think they know what "value" to place on a product, or what "performance" is acceptable, but at the end of the day, the winners are chosen by the consumers who decide to spend their money.

I am a big fan of the ATV3, and it is an excellent tv box. IMO the UI on the video apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, is much better on the ATV3, especially Netflix. The ATV4 version of Netflix finally added genres a few months ago, but it is a dumb down version when compared to the ATV3 one.

So, if there is not any video apps you want that are not available on the ATV3, but are for the 4, I would just stay with the ATV3 for now.

While there are a few good games on the ATV4, it is mostly boring bubblegum games. Hopefully with news like the 4GB limit, this will change in the future. Maybe by the time it will be worth to upgrade, there will be a 4K version.

I guess we may never know, but in my mind I always thought he meant a la carte apps on the ATV. I wish I knew.

I have no idea what you are referring too, as I never rejected that people can have their own opinions. Not really sure where that came from. I was just saying that record sales and everything else you have mentioned is not proof that Apple has not lost there way.

Lets just agree to disagree then.

its a far smoother interface. It may not have any MUST haves in it but it's just better. Depends whether something being better to use is worth the money to you.
I do think it might be worth waiting for the 4k version but I think that depends on iTunes selling 4k films and I'm not sure when that's going to happen.

I like the new Apple TV. I'm a casual gamer but I don't play games enough to buy a dedicated console. I do play games on there from time to time, mainly Mr crab.

I buy a lot of movies and TV shows from iTunes so for me the New Apple TV was a good buy. I use it everyday.

I've had the original Apple TV, the ATV3 and now the 4, so I'm a long term user. I've got my ATV3 in the bedroom now. I don't watch much TV in my bedroom because I'd prefer to watch it on the tv in my living room as it's bigger (50 inches). Over the holidays I watched some tv in my room and I now find the ATV3 interface to be clunky and ugly. I guess I've become really used up the new set up. Once the app developers start taking advantage of the new App size. I'll buy a 64GB ATV4, move my 32GB ATV4 to the bedroom and retire my ATV3.

I've had the Apple TV 4 ever since it came out.
Still have to find a single useful or enjoyable app.
Somehow everything I try is less useful/entertaining than on my iPhone ir iPad.

Or is it just the interface (remote) that's hard to get used to?

Apple TV users id love to hear your feedback (and app suggestions)

I jus it for streaming with Beamer and Netflix and this works great for me.

Apple won't still allow us to save our movies for a much better watching experience. SMH!

Incorrect, you can install VLC and store movies on the ATV4 directly.

Incorrect, I have had this discussion on this forum several times. People claiming that when storing movies via VLC, this would only be there till you shutdown the app, but it is and will be there until my ATV runs out of storage. As I have the 64gb version that is not going to happen soon.

I was talking about regular itunes movies. They appear to be downloaded and stored and managed by tvos. What were you suggesting specifically?

I thought you were discussion the option of storing content locally in general based on user preference. My point was that this is indeed possible.
