I went in to the Apple Store yesterday after making an appointment. They were to replace the graphics card, despite my having no issues at all. I would rather have it serviced before any issues occur, you know?

They ran diagnostics for fifteen minutes just to see if I had the correct card and whether or not it was working. Not sure why they could not have simply checked the 'About This Mac'...

All that, and... since the card "passed" their test, it was ineligible. They said that it would have failed the test had it been the card that Apple was replacing. I directed them to plenty of articles, this being one of them, but they just kept going back to their idiot train of thought...

Well, super...

Maybe it was the 1 GB model of the card. I'm not sure, and neither were they.

Yes, it's not a full recall - that's why it's no on their site.

Apple should just publish the diagnostic tool - it'll save a lot of hassle for the customer and wasted tech support hours for Apple?

It is Apples fault for designing not enough ventilation in the first place. And trying to squeeze a video card into a small place that it doesn't belong.

Yeah it's Apple's fault these video cards are defective..

LOL That is like bringing in a perfect working car and saying the engine might blow I want a new one.
Sometimes you people crack me up.

Actually, it's more like taking your perfectly working vehicle in to get a recalled item repaired, such as the power braking system on a Toyota Prius.

It's called planning ahead...

Apple computer dies: Inconvenient

Brakes in your car die: Serious risk of bodily injury or death to yourself and others

See the difference?

Here is my screen issue:
Intermittently, when my display would wake from sleep all I would have is a white screen with the Apple menu strip up top or sometimes not even a menu strip.
So I thought I would get a screenshot of this via cmd+shift+4 and drag from upper left to lower right corner. But lo and behold, by doing this action, the dragging actually brought my display back to normal. So of course my screenshot looked like a normal display - rather useless as proof of a problem.
So the next time it happened I did cmd+shift+3 (instead of 4) which takes the screenshot without dragging, so that documented what the screen actually looked like.
As an aside, cmd+shift+3 would bring back a few tiny patches of my regular display and a second cmd+shift+3 would bring back a few more patches. But the only way I could fully restore the normal display was cmd+shift+4+drag the entire screen surface, or if my menu bar was visible, a reboot would restore the display.

Well, I got my iMac back yesterday after getting the graphics card replaced under the recall. On its first display wake from sleep, I got the same symptom, see screenshots below. On left, what was facing me on wake, on right what it looked like after cmd+shift+3. So does this mean the second graphics card is also faulty or are we looking at a software issue in ML?

You didn't ask them to turn it on in front of you and check it out? Is it still happening or was it just that one time? If it was just that one time, maybe it needed some getting used to??

No I didn't. They said they had tested it after install and all was fine. But I don't know how they did the testing. I'm waiting for a call back. It hasn't happened again but I haven't let the display go to sleep on its own - using a hot corner instead. Have been out most the day so I am going to let the display sleep on its own again and see what happens. This was happening at most a couple of times a week before it went in for card replacement so it might not happen again for a few days, who knows. Very frustrating. This iMac has had nothing but niggly little issues since the upgrade from SL to ML.

Always good to see Apple throw a bit of help to people that got stuck with bad product.

It's always good to see Apple be ethical, but given how many pages (over 300) discussing the 2011 MacBook pro alone from people who've been told to spend $300~$600 on a new system board, only to have the same problem return... at least before Apple makes those 150+ page posts "permission denied"...

And "bad product"? What lovely use of Corporate English(tm)... unless you were being sarcastic, which is the only time I try to use their amoral language...

Not me.. I told the guy that brought out my computer to hook it up and fire it up... I wasn't gonna leave the place without it being untested...

Good luck with your situation... :)

Took my Mac in, all they do is run a diagnostic util to determine if you need a replacement.

Unfortunately my graphics glitches are random and therefore I had to lug my iMac back with no replacement. :(

I just got my iMac back with no replacement as well. My iMac passed all the diagnostic tests. The thing of it is, when I was chatting with the Apple rep at the beginning of all this he never asked if I was having any issues with my iMac. Apple simply found an authorized repair shop for me and told me to take it in. So if I have issues in the future, I will be sure to screen shot it. It is kind of messed up that I was without my machine for a few days with nothing done. On the positive side, at least my screen wasn't removed so there are no dust specs behind the glass.

Took my iMac in told genus my screen goes black, white, blue and sometimes flashes white. He run test but passed test. Genus said he would replace the card anyhow and I picked it up next day. No dust under screen and it's hasn't had these problems anymore. Not sure why they are not changing some cards but I had a good experience with Apple this time.

Just wanted to update on my case. Simply replacing the graphics card did not resolve my screen issue. Now, with a hard drive and logic board replacement, the screen issue appears to be resolved.
Diane

No, because preventative maintenance is preventative maintenance, period.

I don't even know where to start with this one. Computers don't really have "preventative maintenance", other than maybe cleaning fans out, or specific procedures for specialized equipment like liquid cooling.

Nope...screen issue has reoccurred.
