I was denied by my local Apple store today. My iPhone falls under this issue per my serial number and per interment issues. Passed all the test. Was told by the store manager nothing else will be done.

Not good. Very disappointed since this issei does happen to my phone intermittently.

Try to call Apple by phone

----------

Back in the day they would have just swapped the phone out. Sigh.

Which days are you referring ?

I was able to fix mine by myself after my phone/computer tools arrived. A little daunting to take the phone apart but I sure learned a lot about it. Today my phone and specifically the sleep/wake button work just like new.

Will they replace the entire phone or just the sleep/wake button?

I would really like to get an iPhone 5 with AWS support. Because I was such a devoted early adopter/sucker I am stuck with one that doesn't get LTE speeds.

The way I understand it is they are fixing the problem only, in this case the button and that's it.

Just an update with my experience:

I spoke to Apple telephone support who basically brushed me off as I'd already had my iPhone replaced for £209, I stated that at the time I was offered 2 options:
Buy phone at £209 as replacement.
or
Put up with it.

Where as now they are offering a fix - which I would have taken had it been available. He palmed me off as saying well I had a replacement (forgetting it was a paid £209 one, not a free one!) before this program was initiated but he'll take the IMEI, serial and repair reference number and get back to me within 7 days with an answer, his tone wasn't very good and he was dismissive - even though the repair invoice stated 'faulty home/power button'. He kept mentioning battery issues which I did not have and did seem quite unaware of the recall/fix for specifically the power button, he seemed to merge it with a battery recall program or something as he kept mentioning diagnostics.

I lost patience and emailed tcook[at]apple.com, had a phone call within 3 hours from a representative and he took all my details, same as above ref. no, invoice, serial, IMEI and is contacting me on Monday regarding a refund to my original payment method.

Do you seriously think Tim Cook got your email and got someone on the case pronto? Yeah, and I bet he also takes the time to read resumes as well... (hey, once upon a time I was expecting a reply too)

I've had problems with Apple support in Bangkok where the local Authorised Service Centres were giving me crap -- a call to Apple support in the USA fixed that. They keep the local Service Centres in line.

He did not say either that he thought Tim Cook personally read his e-mail, or that he was expecting a reply.

this program is very new to them, so unless you get someone that has done this already expect to be there a while, they could not find the proper code, had to do 2 repair orders, at one there were 5 "genius's" around me. I was there for more than an hour trying to do a simple repair & loaner phone, then i got the loaner phone left the store made a call and I could barely hear with the Volume on Max, walked right back to the store, the kid says its not that loud but I can hear them, then he goes to someone, they go to someone else, at that point I was done, walked over said just give me the phone I have already been here way too long & its only a few days.

He didn't. But his office did. Every time there is a quality program you can expect a butt load of folks emailing him about this or that. They likely have filters in place to weed out those emails and send them to customer service to deal with. Same as they would have when Steve was around and his email got out.

Particularly in a case like this when the customer was dead to rights and the issue was some supervisor didn't make sure his reps checked their email etc for current information.

I've been lurking in this thread for a while to see if my issue would come up but it hasn't so I'll just ask.

I have an iPhone 5 that has this issue but the serial number isn't eligible. Can I do anything about it or try my luck?

Wow, I'm so glad Apple is doing this! I was just about to change phones because of this. Anyone know if this is a repair or a replacement for a brand new iPhone 5?

Now if only they admitted the "purple camera spot" problem too... (google "iphone 5 camera purple spots/specks/dots/stripes") It is also a largely widespread manufacturing defect which affects many-many iPhone 5 owners (including me and some of my friends). And it also has the nature of magically appearing just after the expiration of the warranty period... :( I didn't care for the "scuffgate", I could live with it – though I wasn't very happy, of course.

The sudden fault of the sleep/wake button (about 13 months after I bought the phone) was a painful suprise to me, as this was the first time I encountered a problem that rendered my device pretty much unusable (yes, I am aware of assistive touch, but one can see that it's only a very limited and uncomfortable workaround). Please note that I have never dropped my phone, I always took good care of it. As I learned from Apple Support Communities forums, the very problem of this defect is that the flex cable (aka "Audio Control and Power Button Cable") wears out in about a year. So I had it replaced at a third party repair service for about 50 USD. The button works flawlessly since then.

And just two weeks after, my rear camera also turned out to be defective. I understood in no time that I fell victim to another manufaturing defect: irremovable purple spots appear on the camera picture, ruining your photos and videos. It's not dust, nor scratch but the result of some very strange fault in the optics itself. You have to have the the whole camera replaced to get rid of it, but that would've been way too expensive to me, so I just accepted my situation... I really don't want to incite anyone here, I'm just telling that iPhone 5 was a huge disappointment to me in many respects compared to my good old iPhone 4 which I never ever had any problem with, not even after 2 years of massive use.

I went to the Genius Bar a couple months back with a lock button and battery issue. I said at the time that the lock button was intermittent although I joked it would probably work perfectly now I was sat at the bar. Luckily the phone failed to lock after 10+ tries by the genius. Although I decided to not sort the button out after I learned the price and just had the battery done.

Would the lock button issue be on record with Apple? As mine seems to be in perfect working order now.

"Apple requires that any phone that receives a sleep/wake button replacement under the program be upgraded to iOS 7." Oh, of course

I'm curious about whether or not they'd let you send in a jailbroken device. I brought my iPhone in once because there was dust under the lens, and the Genius Bar guy said that I need to unjailbreak before bringing it in for any kind of service.

Man, Apple really is being aggressive in this push to iOS 7. At least with iOS 6, users had an option to NOT update while STILL maintaining the use of certain services and if you got a replacement, getting said replacement with an older version of iOS would still be an option.

At this point, if you don't update, you:
- are vulnerable to MiTM attacks because of the SSL bug. But you're safe if you're on iOS 5 or below.
- cannot use FaceTime.
- cannot have your sleep button repaired.

And none of these things have anything to do with iOS 7.

My button died a month after my 12month warranty expired. Made 2 trips to apple store and all that was offered was the $270 replacement. After using the assistive touch for a couple of months I finally found a place by the mall that fixed it for $30. Kind of frustrated that apple did not assume responsibility sooner.

Yeah that really bugged me too.

Wow, I thought it was just me who saw something really meaningless, and got super irritated by it to the point where I posted my hurt feelings on an internet forum...

While I'm at it, I ran out of ketchup the other day.. it ruined my week! #

There is nothing stopping you trying your luck. By the same token, there is nothing stopping Apple refusing to do anything about it under the terms of this program because your serial number is not eligible.

Is $350 really what they're offering for a 5? I remember the numbers being lower, 260 or so... Did the prices go up or is that wrong?

I feel like even 350 isn't enough, a brand new 5s costs 649$, who would spend $300 on a 5s when the next iphone comes out in September?

It'd be more than enough to sign a new subsidy contract plus AppleCare. Here's hoping my 5 starts to act up just before my contract and this program expires ;)
