What about for people who have this issue intermittently and when they are at the apple store can not replicate this problem? Are they SOL?
Well obviously if they can't duplicate the problem, your iPhone won't qualify.

Yes that's always been the case in warranty claims. If you couldn't demonstrate/ replicate the issue in front of the genius; they had no reason to accept your claim.

will apple fix this issue for an iphone 5 with cracked screen?

i have an eligible phone that exhibits the issue but also has a cracked screen. does anyone know if apple will fix this issue despite the cracked screen?

You could click the link to Apple's site and see for yourself:

"Note: If your iPhone 5 has any damage such as a cracked screen which impairs the replacement of the sleep/wake button, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the sleep/wake button replacement. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair."

Apple requires that any phone that receives a Sleep/Wake button replacement under the program be upgraded to iOS 7.

Man, Apple really is being aggressive in this push to iOS 7. At least with iOS 6, users had an option to NOT update while STILL maintaining the use of certain services and if you got a replacement, getting said replacement with an older version of iOS would still be an option.

Hot damn! I've been pulling my hair out from having to press the Sleep button a bunch of times before it will respond.

You may not qualify to get it replaced. Apple should not be testing anything and just replace the switch if the SN matches.

They really should just go off the serial. I have none of the symptoms, but who's to say I won't get them later like after January when my two years are up? If that happens I'll be really unhappy.

I'll bet Apple made no improvements with this fix and is just replacing parts. Lets face it, the design is bad and doesn't hold out with everyday use.

I was denied by my local Apple store today. My iPhone falls under this issue per my serial number and per interment issues. Passed all the test. Was told by the store manager nothing else will be done.

Not good. Very disappointed since this issei does happen to my phone intermittently.

I'd take it to another apple store. If that's the case everywhere then it's a rather useless recall since it's nothing more than a warranty claim at that point

I had this problem with my iPhone 5 that was purchased on launch day. On top of that it was heating up when charging and it made a yellow spot on screen. I gave it to Telenor they called me that Apple is interested in my device a few days later I got a new one with additional 2 years warranty from the day that I got the replacement phone. So I'm happy with Apple <3

If it's not broken why? Just hold out for a few more months and get an ip6.
Because mine is actually exhibiting symptoms of this problem. Besides, it is a work phone, so there is no guarantee that they will bump me up to ip6 once released.

Went into Apple Store Regent Street to talk about a refund as I had to pay for the replacement.

The staff wasn't even aware of this recall and was brushed off as a rumour.

Sigh. I've not had any good experience with Apple Store here in the UK.

Well, with the iOS 7 controversy, I assume they take every chance to upgrade people no matter what. iOS adoption flowcharts come first...

I'm eligible but do not have this issue.
However, the battery has become so bad on my 5 that it will be totally dead after about 6 hours of being off the charger and about 2 hours of usage.
Wonder how they'd feel if I took a loaner...and then never gave it back hah.

Just an update with my experience:

I spoke to Apple telephone support who basically brushed me off as I'd already had my iPhone replaced for £209, I stated that at the time I was offered 2 options:
Buy phone at £209 as replacement.
or
Put up with it.

Where as now they are offering a fix - which I would have taken had it been available. He palmed me off as saying well I had a replacement (forgetting it was a paid £209 one, not a free one!) before this program was initiated but he'll take the IMEI, serial and repair reference number and get back to me within 7 days with an answer, his tone wasn't very good and he was dismissive - even though the repair invoice stated 'faulty home/power button'. He kept mentioning battery issues which I did not have and did seem quite unaware of the recall/fix for specifically the power button, he seemed to merge it with a battery recall program or something as he kept mentioning diagnostics.

I lost patience and emailed tcook[at]apple.com, had a phone call within 3 hours from a representative and he took all my details, same as above ref. no, invoice, serial, IMEI and is contacting me on Monday regarding a refund to my original payment method.

I had this issue about 3 weeks ago, I just went for the £209 replacement phone - stupid but I did it.

Any recourse to get a refund ?

I have the IMEI of the old one but not the serial number.

I'm in the Uk.

Edit:
It turns out I do have the serial number. It would have been eligible. I suppose I now have grounds for a refund of the £209, they never gave me the option of a fix just the £209 purchase.

Blimey I had exactly the same response where I was just brushed off.

I've emailed a customer rep contact that was given to me when I emailed Tim on a separately issue last time. Let's hope I get better response this time.

Can you update us on Monday if you do get a refund?

It is possible that staff did not know, because the program is not supposed to start in the UK until May 2nd. They may be having training/briefing on it at the start of the week. Besides, stores only facilitate repairs/replacements, you have to contact them via online means if you would like a refund.

Glad to see Apple is doing the right thing here, but why that little caveat about upgrading to iOS7?
Is there any technical reason why that sleep/wake button replacement would preclude those users still running or preferring iOS6, from enjoying their chosen OS?

As I understand it, they don't ask you to upgrade the phone to iOS 7, but that it is going to be upgraded after the repair is done.

So, it seems like they are going to need to reset someones device and by doing so, install the only iOS that is being signed: iOS 7.

I guess the reset is a normal procedure to ensure, that everything works fine after the replacement.

It's rather nice of them to warn users who want to stay on iOS 6, that this is going to happen. ;)

Well obviously if they can't duplicate the problem, your iPhone won't qualify.

Apple is usually condescending about issues like this, so give a try

Says who ? You ?
If you look at ifix pictures of replacing power button on iPhone 5s, it is slightly different from iPhone 5.
Maybe they are using the new one ....
