I got my phone back yesterday and I am pretty sure they swaped the battery because I don't remmender it lasting this long lately.

Took my 16gb iPhone in for repair and got a immaculate loaner unit. The contract they had me sign has this:

2)Failure to return Loaner Phone. In the event that you fail to return the Loaner Phone to Apple by the Return Date Apple will obtain full ownership rights in the Customer Phone, and may use or dispose of the Customer phone as apple sees fir; and (ii) you will obtain full ownership rights in the loaner phone and acccept the loaner phone provided to you as a full replacement of the Customer Phone. All original terms of sale, including the remainder of any warrenty terms still in effect, that applied to the Customer Phone shall continue in force and shall apply to the Loaner Phone.

Does that mean i could just keep the loaner?

Dropped my phone off on Apr 29, got the call that it was ready to be picked up yesterday. When they returned it to me, after booting up I noticed some debris/dust between the glass and the screen in the bottom right corner. I stayed at the store and had to wait for a Genius appointment an hour later to get assessed.

After a call to AppleCare, the store just gave me a new phone rather than do the screen repair.

So frustrating.

When I called them (Apple store) while my phone was repaired, they couldn't tell me any different from the online status page. No harm in going to the store to press them on the matter, unless it's hours away, and they may try to escalate things. Perhaps the repair centre is trying to source a particular repair part and this part has some lead time, thus delaying things.

My question is whether they'll still do it after they've found out I've opened the phone myself to replace the battery even though I'm out of warranty...

Yes, but interestingly I was just informed that mine is not repairable and they are giving me a "brand new phone" . I was worried that maybe they would charge me to fix due to the replaced battery.
I also overheard a girl getting her phone back for the repair and they had also replaced her battery and camera. So it sounds like they are checking everything and making sure your phone is in tip top shape. kudos to Apple.

I was wondering the exact same thing. Just got back from the Apple store with my loaner phone and read this clause in the agreement. The loaner appears to be brand new out of the box. I restored from my backup in iTunes and am wondering at this point why I'd go back for my old phone at all.

A concern would be that this loaner phone is not currently registered to me and I'm not sure if that would be a problem if I ever wanted to trade it in when I'm eligible for an upgrade. But I suppose I could trade it through Gazelle or a third party if need be. Either way- the way I'm reading this, there doesn't appear to be any penalties in place for keeping the loaner...someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Took mine in the other week, gave me a loaner (white, ewww). called me yesterday to say they couldn't fix it so they're giving me a new one.

wow, that simple huh? was it just the sleep/wake button that didn't work?

Yeah, it's out of warranty so I was only getting the sleep/wake replaced. Didn't say much on the voicemail other than "couldn't fix it". I'll ask them when I pick it up what was wrong with it.

My battery was bad (they ran the diag on it), but I couldn't be bothered to pay $79 for a new battery with the new phones around the corner, so i made out!

Finally got a call after 2 weeks to say mine was ready (UK). Picked it up and returned the loaner today and they replaced the battery for free.

The day I dropped it off the Genius told me the battery was in service condition and I could pay £55 to have it replaced but I declined and they did it anyway, bonus!

Why won't Apple include iPhone's with an inoperative volume button, when the fix is replacing the ribbon cable? The ribbon cable connects to not only the volume buttons, but also the Mute and Sleep/Wake buttons.

Curious about this but has anyone actually received an email from Apple alerting them to the existence of this program?

I have not, although my serial number is eligible and it is associated with my Apple ID.

I only know about it from visiting this site... I would have hoped Apple's customer service was a bit more proactive.
