Watch this Steve Jobs interview about xerox. He says big companies (like Apple is now) fall into the trap of 'profits first' ... 'following the heard'.

You want Apple to do exactly what Steve Jobs said is the death of these kinds of companies:

[doublepost=1479857067][/doublepost]

Think again. You should watch this video as well. The Apple Puma1552 wants is the Apple that is good for us, and (in the long run) good for Apple as well.
Stop taking this video out of context. Jobs was only referring to monopolies. Last time I checked, the only monopoly Apple had was on iPod music players.

So when Apple can't secure content deals in TV you're all over them but when they do the same for cabs and possibly autonomous vehicles, you think it's trivial. If you're going to blindly hate on Apple when they don't directly benefit you, at least be consistent.

I'm going to respond to you by stealing a quote from forum member 'Lesser events'. He wrote:

"Why does Apple have to cut items?
Why can't they keep selling them, but shift resources on and off to these devices as improvements are needed?

If I was a major shareholder in Apple, I would be concerned to the point of anger. What is Cook replacing these devices with? What is the direction of this corporation?

It seems they almost want to reduce their presence in the world to an iPhone.

Apple should be doing the complete opposite: developing the best monitors, printers, routers, Pro computers, etc. It has thrived by being a "lifestyle" and not just a stray object or two. Cook has lost the heat and is serving up leftovers."

Apple has a monopoly on people who think osX is way better than windows. We are stuck now in a no win situation because of Apples recent choices: Leave the OS we love, or accept the crap Apple is now doling out.

I am confused. Are you agreeing with me? That is the point I was trying to make that it seems Apple is running after profits which wasn't the case earlier.

Ok, my mistake if I was wrong. What I thought you were basically saying is: "Apple is going for more profits, which is good for them, so get over it".

Yes, ignore 1.3B people and instead focus on hardware for 25,000. Such a visionary you are. And some little company who makes $1B profit every ten days is dumb. Will you be CEO?
Time for our weekly dose of pessimism. :D

Where's that 25,000 metric coming from? @puma1552 said nothing about ignoring India as a market. Frankly, India won't have any great Apple products to buy if Apple isn't investing resources in making them!

There are a lot of things going on right now that I think Apple is messing up badly so that even if this is not where Tim Cook's priorities should be this is such a minor mis-step that I can't find enough energy to be outraged by this news.

So Apple wants to become a software and services company, leaving behind their expertise and profit centers in hardware in order to focus on low margin IP. Color me unconvinced that this is a good strategy.

MR armchair CEO posts are always good for a laugh. And this thread is delivering the goods.

My opinion is that as an avid Apple computer user since 1980 and having been the fanboy forever and bought tons of Apple stuff and nearly all their laptops over the year, iMacs...

...I see Apple slipping with no real affordable laptop options and Windows 10 looking good...

My next laptop will probably be a Windows 10 machine/Surface. Also, my next phone might be the Pixel. Not sure, but will probably get the iPhone SE (solid), even though I hate things about iOS (can't turn off voice control!!!).

If the Surface phone gains traction...It is running Win10 after all...MS is very late to getting their act together, but...

Main point is that MS has good stuff and they seem much more focus and Apple is headed downward.

Just my opinion!

Edit: Ironically, it used to grate my nerves when people said that Apple was proprietary. Now, I say, Apple isn't web-based and cross platform. Google services are cross-platform and they are way ahead of Apple on that. Apple needs all their stuff web-based and my family is frustrated with iTunes to no end. Company is lost and getting more lost.

Someone needs to send that video to everyone at Apple so they can see that Steve is actually talking about the current Apple Inc. If you replace Steve saying Scully with Cook, the interview seems appropriate for today. :\

he didn't say the change was an improvement, he's simply reading the writing on the wall: today's apple is about the share price. the old apple was the exception, and now that steve is gone, apple is being run like any other public company: create shareholder value. now that iphone sales have levelled off, expect things to get even worse form our perspective as apple customers:

dongles, nickel and diming on service revenue, boosting prices on macs, discontinuing low margin & low selling hardware like the time capsule. customer service at stores going down in quality. the writing is on the wall.

i hope i'm wrong but there is a clear trend.

This does appear a bit strange but it is I think just a strategy for Apple to try to get a foothold in India. They still don't have real stores there and it's hard to do business there. Much of my family is from and lives in Bombay and I go back often. I see a lot of iPhones but nowhere near as many, per person, as in the US or Europe.

In truth the higher prices mean it will always be harder for Apple to compete in India. However if they just increase sales by a few percent that's a lot of money.

If you are non-Indian then it's hard, indeed sometimes impossible, to do business in India and that's why Apple are partnering with a firm. Certain firms are compelled to do so by law. And in general if you aren't a local they will try to take advantage of you (not saying anything bad about India, it's like this everywhere outside the west).

I honestly think this is all kind of separate from the wider questions about Apple's strategy. Yes, they are now run by an accountant in Cook who is looking to maximise profits and minimise costs in the coming few years and he isn't really thinking beyond that. Anything that doesn't make a lot of money is out, even if it contributed greatly to the user's happiness, and anything that makes money will be milked shamelessly. That much is clear. To be honest it's what most businessmen would do if in Cook's shoes. Why not - you have an amazing brand - why not cut spending on development, ramp up prices and see more money come in? Of course it's dangerous long term but we really see Jobs was a special man and his replacement is much more ordinary.

Anyway that debate could go on forever - Apple doing this partnership is just trying to get a foot into India - there are many very rich people in Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta and Apple wants to sell to them and finds it hard to get in solo.

Amusing. The only way Apple can get people to listen to Apple Music is through bribes, freebee's and partnerships. This reeks of desperation.

I realize this requires a bit of imagination, which always seems to be in short supply here, but India is Apple's next big target market, and getting a toehold in India is no easier than it is in China, and perhaps even more difficult. Anything that gets eyeballs in front of Apple products in India is a plus.

Yes, I am sure those shareholders are just furious with Cook. I mean, how dare he double the share price from when he took over for Jobs. How dare he grow Apple into the most valuable company on the planet. How dare he set the worlds record for revenue for any company in 2015. How dare he lead Apple to almost 100% of the entire cell industry profits. How dare he take Apple Pay from scratch and blow by Samsung and Google to 75% of the transactions in the US in a year and half. How dare he introduce Apple Music and grow it into the second largest in the entire world in 18 months. How dare he take Apple's services and grow it to the equivalent of a Fortune 100 company and larger than Facebook's entire company revenue. How dare he introduce Apple Watch and just a few months become the largest smart watch maker in the entire world with sales exceeded every other smart watch maker's entire history combined. How dare he introduce new MacBooks that are setting sales records when internet commenters said they would flop. And so on.

Those shareholders should be mighty p***off--they read a report that some unknown person told someone that Apple was shutting down a division for unknown reasons. We don't know if it's because Apple is going to be introducing an ever better product, like an integrated wi-fi device with Siri and HomeKit, but clearly Cook's gotta go.
