It's so weird that a major emphasis was put on Apple Intelligence for the new iPhone's and yet most of the features are unavailable, but the new phone is available for pre-order.
Doesn't seem that odd to me. The hardware is on a pretty regular yearly cycle. They have new hardware for upcoming years in the pipeline for a while. The emphasis on AI happened on its own due to various forces in the industry and it takes time to figure out the best way to enhance all the many parts of the OS.

The thing is that I have been doing everything a certain way for all these years that all these new AI work flow adjustments are not gonna be easy for me to adapt to. Habits are hard to break as a 36year old I guess 😅
Hmmm, I'm 64 and expect to gradually update my habits to use AI. Not sure exactly how until I try. At the very least I expect to use Siri more. We've asked questions of our Google smart speaker for years and got pretty good spoken answers. We gave up using siri other than adding an appointment because the answers were poor and very often just directed you to a web page (i.e. not spoken). Smarter photo searches will be nice. I don't PLAN to push using all the new AI features but I will readily try them out when they might help and they will gradually become habit.

It will be interesting see just how much difference on batter drain there is. Hopefully it is fully dependent on which AI feautures you use.
People have asked me about the battery drain I have not read much about it or what it might entail on my iPhone for example

Apple executives admitted to being caught with their pants down regarding where AI features were headed, and then rejiggered their plans to include Intelligence features. But they won't rush it to market. The release is being done methodically with great consideration — to be great, not to be first.

That's correct.

The iPhone is ready, the many AI features will be released when they're ready, over a period of time.

I guess Apple could have withheld release of the 16 and instead sell their lot of 600,000 iPhone 15s per day until every single AI feature is ready, for the next 6 months or so. Imagine how the 3.6 million people buying iPhone 15s during that period would feel.

And imagine the whine-fest of epic proportions there would be if Apple did that.

What the actual **** about German??? Where does one have to put pressure on? EU, Apple or both? Makes me so angry!! We already had to wait for so many stuff, and some are still not here yet..

The only thing I want is image editing. The rest of the AI feature, I will just turn off.

Why is it being called the "U.S. holiday season"? Many countries around the world recognize the same major holidays, and Apple has employees in many of those countries. Let's think bigger than just the US, eh? (spoken as a Canadian)? 😎
Probably to do with our outrageous spending habits as the world's largest economy

iOS 18 will be released to the public on Monday, but the first Apple Intelligence features will not be available until iOS 18.1 is released in October.

iphone-16-pro-apple-intelligence.jpg

Apple Intelligence features will continue to roll out in iOS 18.2 and beyond, with the expected roadmap outlined below per Apple's website and rumors.

Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro model or any iPhone 16 model, and it will initially require device and Siri language being set to U.S. English.

iOS 18.1

ios-18-apple-intelligence-notification-summary.jpg

Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 beta so far:

  • A few Siri enhancements, including improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words
  • Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text
  • Notification summaries for Messages, Mail, and many other apps
  • Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps
  • A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background
  • The ability to create a Memories movie in the Photos app by typing a description
  • Phone call recording and transcription
  • A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only
  • Article summaries when using Reader Mode in the Safari app

iOS 18.2

Apple has been internally testing iOS 18.2 for at least a few months now, based on evidence of the software version in our website's analytics logs.

iOS 18.2 will likely be released in December, as that is when Apple said that it will be making Apple Intelligence available in more English-speaking countries.

Apple Intelligence in More Countries

As mentioned, iOS 18.2 should expand Apple Intelligence to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. for the first time.

Image Playground and Genmoji

ios-18-genmoji.jpg

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said two more Apple Intelligence features that were previewed earlier this year will be added in iOS 18.2, including Image Playground for generating images and Genmoji for generating custom emoji.

Here is how Apple describes Image Playground:

ChatGPT Integration With Siri

iOS-18-ChatGPT.jpg

Apple said that ChatGPT will be available through Siri before the end of the year, so this integration will likely go live with iOS 18.2.

With user permission, Siri will be able to show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will be powered by OpenAI's latest GPT-4o model on its platforms.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free, without creating an account, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to connect their accounts to access paid features on these devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and it said users' IP addresses will be obscured.

iOS 18.3

iOS 18.3 is likely to be a minor update released shortly after the U.S. holiday season. It is unclear if this version will add any new Apple Intelligence features.

iOS 18.4

Siri: Personal Context, On-Screen Awareness, and Deeper Per-App Controls

iOS-18-Siri-Personal-Context.png

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Thursday reiterated that Siri's ability to provide more personalized and contextual responses will not be available until March. He previously said that Siri's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls will be available as part of iOS 18.4, which is expected to be released to the public in March.

Apple Intelligence in Even More Countries

Apple said Apple Intelligence will gain support for additional languages — such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish — next year. This timeframe suggests these languages will be added in iOS 18.4. Another possibility is iOS 18.3, but that update is likely to be a minor one that is released shortly after the U.S. holiday season.

Get Tim Apple as Espresso, this is ridiculously slow.

What AI features work on what products? I would love to see a chart on this.

Is Visual Intelligence only available on 16 and 16 Pro but not 15 Pro? I know there is no camera capture button on the 15 Pro but could you not invoke the camera another way and have Visual Intelligence do its thing?

Is segregating tracks in a voice memo (lyrics v instrument) only on 16 Pro and not 16?

As a 15 Pro owner, I am standing pat for now.

It would be a great to have an article that lays all this out.

So if we have 18.1 on the 15 pro max can I restore my 16 pro max with it ?
As long as both devices are on 18.1 you can restore, but if you leave the 16 on 18.0 then you can't, you'll have to install the 18.1 beta on the 16 first.
