That's correct.

The iPhone is ready, the many AI features will be released when they're ready, over a period of time.

I guess Apple could have withheld release of the 16 and instead sell their lot of 600,000 iPhone 15s per day until every single AI feature is ready, for the next 6 months or so. Imagine how the 3.6 million people buying iPhone 15s during that period would feel.

And imagine the whine-fest of epic proportions there would be if Apple did that.
Probably the same as 16 buyers if they add 12 ram next year and it’s needed.

This timeline lends credence to the supposition that Apple probably would have preferred to bake many of these features into iOS 19 and MacOS 16, but ChatGPT’s sudden precocity and Google and Microsoft’s own haste to deploy “intelligent” features across Android and Windows appear to have thrown that timeline into a bit of disarray.
Without ChatGPT and friends Apple wouldn’t have done anything like that at all. There was no timeline for that stuff.

As an iPhone 15 Pro Max user in the EU – someone who so far has upgraded his iPhone each year – the decision to skip this year and wait for iPhone 17 couldn't have been easier.
Makes sense to me. Though I'm not sure the step from 14 to 15 was that big either. Even me currently upgrading from 13 isn't huge though just big enough to motivate me.

Me: So nothing comes with iOS 18.0?

Tim: Well, you can put your icons anywhere you want.

Me (holding up a fist): Come here! I'll show you where you can put your icons...
Not sure I would risk a fist fight with Timmy.

So in other words. Wait until 18.5.1 until I should update for iOS 17.

For 18.0 through 18.4, the emphasis is going to be adding new AI features and getting those out the door. I think it is prudent to wait for a release where at least some emphasis will be associated with fixing problems for all of those new features. That is why I typical wait for a x.1.1 or x.2 release but not this go around.

It's funny how "Apple Intelligence" is all over the marketing for these phones; when you place an order it literally says "iPhone 16 Pro Max" and beneath that it says "Apple Intelligence", as if that is the main feature of these phones, possibly even a subtitle of the phone's name itself, and yet the phones won't even launch with Apple Intelligence.

Not that I don't trust Apple to roll out these software updates on time, but the software/hardware schedule they've locked themselves into is producing some awkward results. I can't think of a previous time the release of a phone was centered around a software feature that was coming later. The 4S was in a similar situation, it was centered around Siri, they even claimed the "S" stood for "Siri", but Siri was available at launch. This is different.

It's so weird that a major emphasis was put on Apple Intelligence for the new iPhone's and yet most of the features are unavailable, but the new phone is available for pre-order.

It is weird, and it doesn't really have a precedent. It shows the extent to which the AI craze caught Apple by surprise and they had to develop these features on a rushed timeline.

To be fair, the European iPhone 16 marketing pages where all of this is missing are even funnier.

Selling a phone based on Apple intelligence and most it won’t be available for 3-6 months after.

Curious how this will affect apples bogus “carbon neutral“ plans considering the insane amount of power needed to do A.I. 🤣

You’re telling me that you aren’t looking forward to draining a small lake every time you ask Siri a question???

Lends credence to the idea Apple had absolutely nothing and were busy trying to convince people their four grand ski goggles were the future.

True, even worse for people outside the US because as a UK person I'd be in for a hell of a wait of nearly 3 months to get a feature in UK English that was heavily advertised for this phone from day 1 if I wasn't running the 18.1 beta.

Apple needs to really sort itself out with these software releases because advertising that this phone is designed around Apple Intelligence while promoting it heavily and then withholding it from the rest of the world for months is just not on.

"Hello, Apple Intelligence" being the new tagline for both iPhones meanwhile it is not fully ready for another half a year is actually insane for Apple.
Hopefully this is the last time Timmy pulls this nonsense.
If one is truly interested in the full, refined AI experience, it might make a lot of sense to wait for iPhone 17. iPhone 16 hardware was a best guess. Software and hardware should be a better match in 17/ios 19.

It will be even better on iPhone 19. So I'll upgrade my 13 to 16 now and then my 16 to 19 in a few years.

But it’s ok for every other OEM to rollout half baked garbage and charge for it?

Except, I see this as Tim testing the water so they know how far behind they can be in terms of releasing software features. I bet after some time, they will announce features that are still more or less on the drawing board and release it 2 years later. It’s insane for us, but not surprised to me.
