And here in Europe in 2035
Thankfully 😄

My only concern is how long it will take to have something I consider useful. As it is now, it's pathetic.
I have finally got to quiet Siri entirely on all my devices - believe me it took some time before it was totally quiet. No way, I ever turn it on again.

That doesn’t mean I am not interested in useful services, if it is non-intrusive, such as Chat GPT and what builds on it. For now I am testing out ReWritebar app for free. This far I find it good for me and my needs.

iOS 18 will be released to the public on Monday, but the first Apple Intelligence features will not be available until iOS 18.1 is released in October.

Apple Intelligence features will continue to roll out in iOS 18.2 and beyond, with the expected roadmap outlined below per Apple's website and rumors.

Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro model or any iPhone 16 model, and it will initially require device and Siri language being set to U.S. English.

iOS 18.1

ios-18-apple-intelligence-notification-summary.jpg

Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 beta so far:

  • A few Siri enhancements, including improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words
  • Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text
  • Notification summaries for Messages, Mail, and many other apps
  • Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps
  • A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background
  • The ability to create a Memories movie in the Photos app by typing a description
  • Phone call recording and transcription
  • A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only
  • Article summaries when using Reader Mode in the Safari app
See our full list of Apple Intelligence features included in the iOS 18.1 beta for even more.

iOS 18.2

Apple has been internally testing iOS 18.2 for at least a few months now, based on evidence of the software version in our website's analytics logs.

iOS 18.2 will likely be released in December, as that is when Apple said that it will be making Apple Intelligence available in more English-speaking countries.

Apple Intelligence in More Countries

As mentioned, iOS 18.2 should expand Apple Intelligence to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. for the first time.

Image Playground and Genmoji

ios-18-genmoji.jpg

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said two more Apple Intelligence features that were previewed earlier this year will be added in iOS 18.2, including Image Playground for generating images and Genmoji for generating custom emoji.

Here is how Apple describes Image Playground:

Here is how Apple describes Genmoji:
ChatGPT Integration With Siri

iOS-18-ChatGPT.jpg

Apple said that ChatGPT will be available through Siri before the end of the year, so this integration will likely go live with iOS 18.2.

With user permission, Siri will be able to show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will be powered by OpenAI's latest GPT-4o model on its platforms.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free, without creating an account, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to connect their accounts to access paid features on these devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and it said users' IP addresses will be obscured.

iOS 18.3

iOS 18.3 is likely to be a minor update released shortly after the U.S. holiday season. It is unclear if this version will add any new Apple Intelligence features.

iOS 18.4

Siri: Personal Context, On-Screen Awareness, and Deeper Per-App Controls

iOS-18-Siri-Personal-Context.png

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Thursday reiterated that Siri's ability to provide more personalized and contextual responses will not be available until March. He previously said that Siri's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls will be available as part of iOS 18.4, which is expected to be released to the public in March.

Apple Intelligence in Even More Countries

Apple said Apple Intelligence will gain support for additional languages — such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish — next year. This timeframe suggests these languages will be added in iOS 18.4. Another possibility is iOS 18.3, but that update is likely to be a minor one that is released shortly after the U.S. holiday season.

It's quite smart by Apple, they can only produce so many iPhones at any given time, it also makes sense to make the product relevant for 6 months, rather then just a couple of months...
I'm not going to upgrade to IOS 18 straight away though, will wait to see it doesn't affect the battery, as for the AI will more than likely wait for the UK launch in December.....Glad I got the 15 Pro las year 😊

Bigger disconnect between hardware and software with each new iOS/iphone. So the new phone ships with practically nothing that was its main advertising
Not really, IOS 18 which comes at launch has 250 new features.
Also the 16 Pro's have better camera's, better batteries and bigger screens.
The standard 16's are almost as good as the 15 Pro without the telephoto lens.
Also AI will be chargeable in the future, so it has to be kept separately from the main IOS

What the actual **** about German??? Where does one have to put pressure on? EU, Apple or both? Makes me so angry!! We already had to wait for so many stuff, and some are still not here yet..
Sadly Germany is very much Chineese Android land (much less Apple sales, than in China), not a priority for Apple and German is not a major language either.

Probably the same as 16 buyers if they add 12 ram next year and it’s needed to run ai properly.
It's quite obvious, there will be new AI features every year (that will probably need more RAM) however as long as iPhone has been around, if you wanted the new features, you had to upgrade the phone.

My bet is on more ram being required. Look at the increase in number of parameters in each new model. Shipping a phone with the minimum ram requirement for today’s models is just screwing the 16 buyers.
That's just baseless scare mongering!
No doubt your narrative would be the same regardless of the amount of RAM in the 16's

Probably - I find the image cleanup very useful and the writing tools are interesting.

======================================================================
These are the writing tools examples of my response:

Friendly (this is a bit US oriented and it missed the irony in the word interesting):

Yeah, I think it’s really helpful. The image cleanup tool is super useful, and the writing tools are pretty cool too.

Professional:

Indeed, I find the platform to be highly beneficial. The image cleanup tool is particularly useful, and the writing tools are also quite impressive.

Concise:

The platform is highly beneficial, especially the image cleanup tool and impressive writing tools.
I agree and those two, would be my top picks as well

My take is that Apple put Apple Intelligence out there: 1) to claim the name, and 2) to introduce developers to it so that developers could work with it for an extended period of time, and 3) to create a collaborative environment where they could all collectively test/break the AI environment, - before they released meaningful product to the public.

Thats not true and I‘m not talking about Germany. There are more countries and summarized more German speaking people than Japan.
It‘s because of that DMA European Union ********..

Why is it baseless?

Parameter count: For example gpt3 I think had 175 bn parameters while gpt4 uses 1.75 trillion. It is a fact that generally scaling up the parameter count is improving performance. There are obviously diminishing returns, but it seems like count is still increasing for now.

Are we at the minimum ram can handle: this is supported by Apple’s own deprecation of the 14 pro which has 6gb of ram - only supporting 8GB and above. They are pretty clearly stating this is the lower bound for the current batch of models.

Would the narrative be the same no matter the amount of ram? There would still be some concern, but for now you can be sure you’re getting the minimum required for current models. That sucks.

This claim seems true when considering population, but technically according to below, iOS marketshare (% of country) is higher in Germany than China.

Grammatically - “far fewer” given iPhone sales are something you can count.

Sooner or later, Apple will lose Europe to Android. What else should I do with an expensive iPhone where all new functions are withheld from me? I wanted to, but I won't upgrade to the iPhone 16 or newer as long as you keep useful functions from me... and I don't know anyone who will do that now.

I really think this was a case where these features were originally planned for NEXT year but all the "Apple is behind on AI" headlines were starting to impact the stock price so they moved them up a year and are rolling them out as soon as they are "ready".

Edit: @hieranonymous beat me to it
And last thing they can afford is to rush to deliver some failure. So step by step is wise.
And how many fill have access to it? 20% of Apple users?

Well, from my point of view it is EU losing Apple. And that’s just the start. We will see more megatechs opt out of the DMA. It is citizens that need to get politicians to adopt better policies or at least ones less “up to Commissioners to interpret to their will”.
