But it’s totally fine when the red tape is issued by Apple, right? I’ve had to navigate more red tape distributing ONE single app on the app store than the total amount of government red tape I’ve faced since I was born.

Funny how you’re ok with Apple’s red tape, not ok with EU removing that red tape, whilst also complaining about red tape.
The difference here is a company is free to create red tape, because of the nature of business. If another company makes it simpler, then they will take market share from them.

In the case of government red tape, that applies more generally, because it applies to all people, regardless of if they want it to or not. By not following the bureaucratic red tape, it’s breaking the law.

TL;DR:
Apple’s Red Tape - Free association. You can choose to do business with them.

Government Red Tape - Compulsory red tape. Breaking law if not toeing the line.

Yeah while I appreciate what the EU is trying to do at least on paper whoever is drafting these rules is at best incompetent and at worst ignorant of how technology works

Which is why it's so irresponsible for Apple to have let it get this far.

They wouldn't be in this place if they'd self regulated a bit and moderated some of their more egregious behaviors.

Instead they've left lawmakers no choice.

Apple made their bed here (and they continue to do so) and will now have to sleep in it

It is really weird, how many people are happy with the fact that a company can tell you what you can do with a device you bought and now own.
1) The EU are telling you what you can and can't do with your device.

2) You can do whatever you want with your device. iOS is licensed however. Install a different OS if you have the technical capability. Apple is not obligated to help you, or make it easy to do so.

That depends how deeply integrated Apple Intelligence will be with the OS, doesn't it?

The DMA doesn't specify that whole OS components have to be interchangeable with alternatives, otherwise, they would've said something about Siri already.

This feels like Apple is holding out because the EU was mean to them. Either that, or this is a more preferable excuse than "new Siri doesn't speak French"
Not every member state has the same laws regarding encryption. This may mean that Apple cannot roll out their private cloud e2ee service in the EU.

I dont know how iphone screen miroring affects DMA? This feature is awailable on android phones for a while in EU without any problems with DMA. It is between my computer and my phone. WTF Apple????
Because "android" isn't proprietary to Samsung, HTC etc, etc. Windows isn't proprietary to Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.

iOS and MacOS is proprietary to Apple - they control both the OS and Hardware.

There is a world of difference between both scenarios in the eyes of the DMA. EU is where overseas innovation dies. Isn't it convenient there are no EU companies meeting the definition of Gatekeeper? Funny how that worked out right?

This shouldn't be much of an issue, because when the data is handled on the device and you get a prompt asking for the data Siri/Apple Intelengence may use it should be fine. And this should be standard for a privacy focused company, wouldn't it?
Doesn't matter. Data aggregation is prohibited expressly by the DMA.

“The gatekeeper shall not do any of the following:
(a) process, for the purpose of providing online advertising services, personal data of end users using services of third parties that make use of core platform services of the gatekeeper;
(b) combine personal data from the relevant core platform service with personal data from any further core platform services or from any other services provided by the gatekeeper or with personal data from third-party services;
(c) cross-use personal data from the relevant core platform service in other services provided separately by the gatekeeper, including other core platform services, and vice versa; and
(d) sign in end users to other services of the gatekeeper in order to combine personal data,
unless the end user has been presented with the specific choice and has given consent within the meaning of Article

If only Apple had a CEO with a spine who would tell the EU & that Mafia Don wannabe Vestager to go **** themselves. Apple's gonna keep getting fined by ******** charges & invented-on-the-fly "rules" unless Vestager gets off her high horse or Apple starts playing hardball.

I don’t know how Apple could go any slower

They haven’t released anything successfully innovative and of substance in years

All they do is rent seek and raise prices
I think I asked you earlier today for an example of what you actually consider “innovation” these days?

this is super funny.
Why is it funny? Altstore PAL has two apps. All the others are also similar. Even otherwise, logically speaking, they depend on their reputation because once they get a bad reputation, they will cease to exist. Nobody will go there. They are not going to get a free pass like Apple even when their Appstore is better than Apple's

First point...we're talking EU here, where Apple has roughly 25% marketshare. Apple is not a monopoly.

Second point...the DOJ is going to lose this case, precisely because due to precedence, Apple, with 60% marketshare in the US, won't be deemed to be a monopoly.
Even if Apple were deemed a monopoly, being a monopoly isn't illegal

So many on here thought you could just f with IOS and only get the things you wanted with no downside. This episode should at least inform the more honest among you that there are more and more problems to come with the DMA.

You've granted Magrethe Vestager the power to insert herself into the creative and innovative process. You've given her the power to shift the core direction and focus of one of the most innovative and progressive companies in the history of the world. This is NOT how a healthy economy works. Regulation yes, but with a light, delicate touch. The heavy hand of State-Control, which this is, never turns out well, for business OR consumers. These are lessons that have been learned. The EU, in their repeated hubris, over and over, thinking they know what's best for the entire world, is simply trying to recreate colonialism all over again. "the Brussells effect" indeed.

I mean, the attitude of so many of you on here, feigning to be the enlightened chosen ones, those who truly care about the poor developers and the downtrodden customers. It's this savior attititude that drove the very heart of the darkest reigns of European power, just repackaged in a faux-caring charade.

Meanwhile, your burdensome regulation and presumption that you're still, somehow, in charge of the world and can dictate to the rest of us what is valuable and right, have left your own digital economies bereft of anything close to innovation.

It's such a classic story. And this is what those of us who have opposed the DMA have seen from the start.

While there’s probably some spite involved, I do get that they wouldn’t want to open the permissions or APIs to other developers for these features. I also wouldn’t want developers to get this level of access. The DMA was just a really bad idea.

Ooft. Oh well can’t have it both ways but I do think Apple is being a bit harsh.

I’m in UK so  Saying UK is not in Europe is like saying USA isn’t in North America. EU = European Union (no UK). Europe = continent (UK included)

This is why I think Apple should just branch it off and call it euiOS and not iOS. As a customer, I personally much prefer Apple making the decisions for iOS and not the governments. Anyone who loves the government being their tech grandmaster - have fun with your euiOS or Android.

Sorry to be that person, but comparing market cap to revenue (GDP of an economy) is a bit misleading.

No worries about being that person and this isn't misleading in the way that people conflate debt and deficit. Comparing the aggregate value of the products and services that a country produces annually to outstanding shares * last traded share price isn't meant to be an apples to apples comp implying that GDP = a countries "market cap." It merely serves as a general comparison of dollar amount to some other tangible reference point. Similar to how some people may compare GDP to appropriations for Ukraine.

Hm interesting. Apple is starting to punish its EU customers over DMA rulings so it can keep extracting the 30% app tax. Lets see what will crumble first, EU marketshare or EU legislators
I expect neither. Apple customers in the EU will continue to purchase Apple products because most of the core functionality of the product remains intact. A missing feature here and there won’t make much of a difference. It hasn’t so far and I don’t see the lack of Apple Intelligence (temporarily) challenging that trend.

Maybe Apple should make exceptions to the core technology fee for open source free projects and charities and such. Though now that Apple is allowing emulators in the App Store I bet Apple would rather make exceptions to their existing App Store rules to let such apps be in the App Store instead.

Apple Intelligence meant that the product lineup and its features became ever more fragmented. The it just works is no longer relevant, as not only does it not work anymore. But pieces are missing 🤔😬😜
This was bound to happen because different countries/blocs want to exert control over how the product works within their borders and not everyone has the same requirements.
