I don't see that under the 14.99 plan. I only see this under it: "Family Memberships use family sharing'

Do I have to use my university email to get the discount or can I still use my regular Apple ID email?

Apple will today introduce an Apple Music student plan that discounts the streaming service by 50 percent for those who are enrolled in an eligible college or university (via TechCrunch).

The new plan means any academic student in the United States can now pick up an individual Apple Music membership for $4.99 a month, rather than pay the standard $9.99 subscription rate.

U.S. students won't be the only ones to benefit though, as the plan is also open to students in the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The actual cost is expected to vary slightly from country to country, but all markets will see 50 percent off the standard subscription rate.

The student discount is offered for up to four continuous or non-continuous years after sign-up, so students are able to take gap years or breaks between semesters and still sign up again when they return to study. Additionally, the plan is open to all students of all ages, regardless of degree.

The membership tier will be available starting today to both new and existing subscribers. Students can sign up or change their membership online, or go through the Apple Music mobile app. Apple is using student verification technology provider, UNiDAY, to ensure that those who are signing up as students are actually enrolled at a supported institution.

News of the student plan comes two days after it was reported that Apple is planning to overhaul its year-old music streaming service to make it more intuitive. The company is set to redesign the user interface, which will be "bolder, yet simpler", with an emphasis on black and white backgrounds and text as well as more of a focus on album art.

Additionally, the "New" tab in Apple Music is being replaced with a "Browse" option with better organizational tools for finding new content, and Apple will encourage users to use a simplified "For You" section. The new Apple Music app will reportedly debut at WWDC in iOS 10 and will be introduced through an iTunes update on the Mac.

Why do you think that anyone who doesn't share your usage case must be a millennial?

I'd be inclined to agree with Dannys1 - so does that make me a millennial or someone in my 40s?

I'm going to go with millennial for you just as someone who replies to posts you don't actually read.

I know lots of people thoroughly enjoy streaming services. I'm not one of them, but I do think the platforms are very nice for people who enjoy music that way. I'll even admit I'm a little jealous I don't get as much enjoyment out of music as they do.

Where I was disagreeing with Dannys1 is that he insisted pretty much everyone is best served by a streaming service.

signed back up for student today well worth $4.99, at $9.99 it was OK but $4.99 is a no brainer.

Which Uni's does it work with in the UK?
Pretty much all of them, it even works with Sixth Forms and Colleges.

You verify through UniDAYS, which if you're a student in the UK and you don't already have an account for it, you're mad. Sign up, it's great. All they need to do is send an email to your .ac.uk email address (or .county.sch.uk address)

Then you'd be making another assumption, this one definitely wrong.

You were actually disagreeing with Dannys1 when he suggested that perhaps a majority do not enjoy music the way you do:

"I know this is not for everyone, and Apple Music would be best for some, but I think more people enjoy music similarly to the way I do."

Perhaps there are two groups of people:

- those who would like to be able to listen to as much music, legitimately and without ads.

- those who would prefer to own their music, and dislike the idea of a streaming subscription

I don't think it is at all unreasonable to think that the former might outnumber the later.

Going by total cost, streaming would be the better option for anyone who even just bought a very modest amount of music.

I plugged in some figures in an earlier post where the chances are it would still work out less even if AM closed in ten years and people went and bought their favourite stuff if they had to.

And you mentioned that you might buy 10 songs a month - presumably there are more songs than that that you like a bit, but perhaps wouldn't go out and buy.

For me that's one of the big pluses of streaming - to be able to listen to songs / albums I think I might like, but probably wouldn't have bought.

Can't speak for today's 28 y.o. or next decades. I'm 40 something, grew up firmly in the CD era. I have about 300 CDs from my college and early post-college days. Yes, I still listen to many of them -- now ripped as ALAC and MP3 -- because they are "classics" and also bring back good memories. Glad I own those CDs and don't have to keep renting them. I imagine today's 20-somethigs will have albums of the 00 and 10s in their rotation twenty years from now. It's human nature. My parents liked 50s tunes. My grandparents, 20s jazz.

I still buy CDs, though probably not more than 10 a year, because I can better control the sound quality, and no perpetual ransom if I want to listen to them.

I don't find music discovery difficult at all w/o out subscribing. Free version of Spotify, Pandora, old fashioned terrestrial radio, Sound Hounding, even browsing Amazon or iTMS.

Sure - but I did say doesn't listen to a lot of it, not doesn't listen to any of it.

In the figures I plugged in, someone could pretty much buy around two thirds of the stuff they had in Apple Music if it closed after 10 years, and it still not work out any more expensive.

It will be swings and roundabouts, and people mileage will vary, but I still think that a streaming subscription is going to work out the lowest cost for anyone who buys even a modest amount of music.

Thanks for the response, but it says my institution is not legible. Im currently at a London Uni...

I also am an adjunct professor and was able to use my school email to get the discount. Spotify never allowed that as far as I know, so this is a pretty awesome deal.

I've been thinking of switching to AM for a while, the fact that I can match the price I was paying for Spotify has made my mind up. Really like the curated playlists in Apple Music its much better than Spotify in this regard imo.

I can't get it to work from my mac so I tried activating it on my iPad like others. I got to the activation and verification page now I get a message that says I'm already a member of Apple Music. Does that mean Its activated or did something go wrong?

Same thing happened to me

Um, no.

That quote you attribute to Dannys1 was actually said by Vertical Smile. And Dannys1 only quoted s small part. What vertical smile said was:
It depends on your listening habit. I generally listen to 90's Alternative. There are other songs I like, but mostly stuff from the 90's. @ $10 a month, I can buy most of the songs I would listen too.

With Apple Music, after a while of using the service I would be eventually paying more songs that I could have purchased individually.

Using a mix of the free services, with buying the songs I want, in the long run I would be spending less money. Plus, I only spend the money once for the song, with Apple Music, if you stop paying, then you lose everything.

I know this is not for everyone, and Apple Music would be best for some, but I think more people enjoy music similarly to the way I do.

If the price was a cheaper, like the $4.99 for students, I would more likely use the service, but not at $10 a month.

Dannys1 replied to Vertical Smile with:

I hate to break it to you mate, but I really don't think they do.

I replied to that with my post where I disagreed him. I was *AGREEING* with Vertical Smile and the quote you have above in Italics. I was saying different people listen to music different ways. Unlike Dannys1 who said everyone should stream.

Then you posted saying I was wrong. So you were insisting that that the quote you have in italics above is wrong and you said everyone should listen to music the same way on a streaming service.

Spotify's app is eons better and the discount is the same.

Fix the Music app first and then you'll have my attention, Apple.

Yes, I know that was what Vertical Smile said. It was what Dannys1 was disagreeing with.

Vertical Smile said that most people listened to music like he does. Not simply that different people listen to music differently.

And Dannys1 wasn't saying that everyone should stream - he was disagreeing that most people have the same listening habits as Vertical Smile.
