I agree those commercials are like making an Add Poking Fun at Trekkies and then that ad being for the new Star Trek Film.

Great concept! However...

Since a different company and product is involved, it's more like an ad making fun of Trekkies, while pushing a new Star Wars film.

To the diehard fans involved, each detail and subtle dig is important. To everyone else in the world, it's just another rehashed version :)

Problem with the ads:

3. Physics is just stupid. How can a phone get taller, but thinner? Really? That's the best you can do.

If you have ever studied physics, the physics ad makes Apple look stupid. Bigger screen equals more space behind the screen per mm of thickness. Almost every phone is thinner that what it replaces, technology has a habit of getting smaller over time.
4. Subjective to every person's hand size.
Exactly, see my previous post, #399.

The thump on is stupid. From my calculations:
iPhone screen is 1.96" wide
SG SIII screen is 2.34" wide

That is 20% wider. I think that the average variation of human hand size is more than 20%.
I agree that the SIII screen is "too big" for some people's hands, but for others it is a great size. If you want an Android phone with a 3.5" or 4" screen they are available, this is called choice, or as some Apple fans call it, fragmentation. The most popular Android phone currently competing with the iPhone is the 4.7" SIII. This ad looks like Apple trying to justify their smaller screen while many consumer are votes with their money and buying 4.5"+ phones.

Apple choose to make only one screen size for the iPhone, they have to accept that this means that the iPhone will be too small, or too big, for some consumers.
4" are available but they are not the "super phones" - the high end

This is a common complaint I've seen in Android related forums is that if you want the high end you are forced to get the 4.7" (One X) or 4.8" (S3)

The Samsung ad is moderately funny, but way too long. IMHO the message gets lost in too much information, plus can't see the the phone clearly.

It's not an ad designed to get people to buy a Samsung phone. It's an ad designed to keep Samsung users feeling good about themselves to they don't jump ship.

Obviously, an ad like that won't sell any phones. But it does its best to make the faithful stay that way. Samsung wants to make the iPhone so repulsive, hitting on all the fandroid trolling points, so their customers don't dare look at the iPhone as a viable upgrade. Samsung knows that if their customers do, they'll lose customers.

You really think Samsung burned Apple?

Samsung would kill to have people lining up for their phones.
The SIII may be a great phone, but these sort of advertisements just preach to the choir and scream inferiority complex. Samsung is petty and jealous.

They're making fun of customers they want to convert, there's some great marketing. And they're touting the worst possible use of their NFC technology.

Attack ads are always an admission that you are in second place.

Samsung is clearly very worried. Microsoft Windows Phone 8 is coming, and that's going to be seen as a very good alternative to Android for those that don't want an iPhone. Samsung just lost a major court case that not only rebuked their only profit-making strategy of copying the iPhone, but may end up taking away all of their profits. And to top it all off, there's lines around the block of customers desperate to get their competitor's products which are selling better year after year.

So you're right, attack ads are an admission they're in trouble. I don't really blame Samsung for thinking that, though ;).

This is really an ad targeted at their own existing customers, though. The iPhone 6th gen is the superior product, but Samsung doesn't want anyone to notice and decide to switch to iPhone... they won't get those customers back.

Samsung's ads and copying reflects a sense of inferiority and self loathing found in a lot of asian cultures. It has its roots in history where the western powers swooped and took over large sections of asia in the 18th and 19th century. The defeat of Japan in WWII reinforced it even more.

This phenomenon explains why they try so hard in everything they do and why they try to emulate western companies rather than trying to do it their own way. Look at the anime characters with blonde hair and blue eyes but asian features and all of those asians who bleach their hair blonde.

I really wish they would stop trying to be like us and be original and creative.

A concrete example would be the attitudes of the Chinese Olympians who never seemed to be satisfied even though they were excelling in a number of events. Despite being crowned the "best" in the world in some events, that did not seem to be enough to overcome their low collective self esteem.

Bs, look at antennagate apple denied then falsly claimed all others had the same issue by mixing it with something else.

Apple like any mayor company has issue admitting faults

All others did (and still do) have the issue. It was a minor issue, though, and the iPhone 4 antenna was better than the 3GS by any objective measure.

Apple has admitted when it's been wrong far better than any other company I can think of. Remember EPEAT?

I was in the Verizon store for almost two hours yesterday afternoon. Here was the dialog overheard.

Verizon employee: Welcome to the Verizon store, may I help you.

Customer: Yes, where is the new iPhone to look at.

Verizon employee: They are over there, points in direction.

Customer: Okay, are there any left in stock?

Verizon employee: Yes, but they are limited in 16GB capacities.

Customer: Goes to look at iPhone. Looks underwhelmed. Talks with other customers about it looking about the same as old iPhone. Also talks about the screen being smaller than imagined, iOS looking the same and data plans.

Customer and/or Verizon employee: Where is the Samusung Galaxy S3 to look at? We have the Samsung Galaxy S3 which is popular and has a bigger display.

Customer: Looks at Samsung Galaxy S3. Ask questions. Plays around. Decides to buy one.

Saw it happen literally 10-15 times. I'm sure the iPhone is going to sell well, but it's all about the screen now. In general, people just want bigger phones. So I think after the hype wears down, the iPhone will just be another phone. Especially after Google releases a new unlocked Nexus for $349 and the new Note comes out.

And I bet 10 of them return the S3 within the month, when they realize the software sucks and they see all their friends with the iPhone.

Really not a fan. After the AWFUL genius ads, these are better but still they lack the quality of the previous generation's ads... I am really worried about Apple's marketing department. Steve must have said no to a lot of their crap because I haven't seen Apple ads this lame in awhile. The finger one is okay but the rest are crap IMO.

All the same, I love my new iPhone 5 so at least Apple is still making quality products.

Yeah.. I am worried too. I mean, have you seen their stock prices? So low... they must have a SUCKTASTIC marketing department.

No, Apple marketing is genius. They did something new and completely unique from every other company. It makes them stand out and its going to boost their sales.

There is choice in terms of hardware but very little in terms of the OS. I'd like to see a proper three horse race mobile. MS, Apple and Google could each enjoy a nice chunk of the market and provide us with real alternatives.

I think if Microsoft ever gets their act together, they're going to wipe out Android. Google can't match the sort of integration Apple or Microsoft can with their other products. Right now Android is the iOS-alternative. Windows Phone can become a much better iOS-alternative to supplant them.

I agree, a three-way race would be better for the consumer, but three way competitions are inherently unstable and rarely last. It's always Coke vs. Pepsi. Windows vs. Mac. Airbus vs. Boeing. Marvel vs. DC. Intel vs. AMD. Home Depot vs. Lowes. Verizon vs. AT&T. FedEx vs. UPS. On and on and on.

Right now, Microsoft is RC Cola, beaten out in the top two spots in the mobile space by linux, strangely enough. I think if anyone can pull off a coup, though, it's going to be Microsoft. They can offer integration with people's Windows PCs and Xboxes, and whatever else they have coming, in a way Android simply can't manage.

Good link in that page to an article written just after the iPad came out:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1151235/apple_rolls.html

Well worth reading. It explains quite simply how Apple manages to produce incredible things customers love while pundits yawn. It's especially interesting for when it was written, in light of how the iPad has changed the world after just a couple short years.

Cut the map BS. Let's get back to reality should we?

Quote "In a graphics-specific processing test, iPhone 5 beat the S III and RAZR M by more than a factor of three."

Did I write the iPhone 5 is not fast? I'm aware of the Geekbench score, thank you.

In the physics ad, Apple shows off their "glorious" maps app. Do you really think the map app is anywhere near release quality ? I think the maps app is alpha quality full of errors.

Apple is or was about the whole widget, the seamless interaction of sw and hw.

What's the fastest iphone good for when the maps are crappy?

If you only care about speed, you can build your own barebone Pc or overclock your Android phone...no need to get an iphone or mac.

Thumb is probably a 'necessary' ad. Cheese is annoying thanks to the voice acting but maybe the best ad because its a lifestyle thing. Physics is OK.

EarPods are just there.

I do not like Jeff Daniels' voice over. He's no Jeff Goldblum, that's for sure.

I think Steve would accept the concept of the ads but he probably would've pushed to do better. I think you'd get it with another voice actor.

Mixed reviews on these ads but they're not as embarrassing as the Genius campaign even if that actor was cute.

Problem with the ads:

1. Panorama available on my Iphone 4

Maybe you should tell :apple: that. They say this: 'Panorama is available on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPod touch (5th generation).'

2. Ear buds can be purchased seperately, I dunno how this even made it into a commercial for the iphone 5.

Because they come with iPhone 5, genius! People in the market for a phone might be interested in the earphones included particularly since they're a new design.

3. Physics is just stupid. How can a phone get taller, but thinner? Really? That's the best you can do.

It's silly. Get over it. They always push the 'thinner' line. This time they were subtle.

4. Subjective to every person's hand size.

 You think? The ad exists by way of explanation for why the phone got taller but not wider as well. Deal with it.

Really none of those ads would make any educated consumer want to buy an iphone 5.

*facepalm* I guess you think the 'educated consumer' faps over specs? You're talking for "educated consumers" but you type 'Iphone,' don't know what phone you have or if it supports panorama, etc, etc.

I hope you're not in marketing. No, no, maybe you are. The kind of marketing people who ran :apple: into the ground in the 1990s.

Maybe you should just "upgrade" to that Samsung GS3.

The iPhone 5...because you are too lazy to shift your thumb slightly....
The iphone 5: because we don't discriminate against people with small hands  No matter how much I shift my hand with a wide screened phone, I can't use it.

I've wondered about the audiophile people. Are there any scientific studies that say that they can actually discern little things in audio equipment that others can't? Or is it a placebo effect?
Some people have managed to keep their hearing and can hear high notes you lose when you reach adulthood; it's about 20%. Also, audiophiles use boosters to enhance the sound; I presume it's for the remaining 80%. Unfortunately, these boosters aren't portable, but audiophiles base their reviews on the use of these things.

I prefer this style of ad from Apple. I wasn't a fan of the celebrity ads or the genius ads. They're simple and they work.

Say cheese , this tops it, this is what apple do best, they make something better and use it to market it even if its something that was there already but now users will be using it more either for fun or for actually taking wedding pics. :D
