Just a thought, but I’m wondering if Apple is truly being Apple and deliberately handicapping the iPad Pro with gimped OS in order to not completely lose most macOS users. They have made it clear they don’t want to merge the 2, but Jesus, they are just completely trashing the capabilities of the M1 iPad Pro. A 2019 iPad Air isn’t even challenged with iPadOS let alone any iPad Pro from 2017 and above.
And that makes no sense. Apple WANTS more iPad users because they get their apps from Apple directly. iPads are much more profitable than Macs.
Clearly the path forward would be to beef up iPadOS and iPad catalyst app frameworks to cross the iPad apps over to Mac... thus getting more App Store usage on Mac. Between a better Catalyst framework and improvements to specifically File handling and Multitasking to be more "Mac-like" that was the bare minimum people were expecting.

So no reason to upgrade from my 9.7 pro then...
The iPad 9.7 pro (A9X) is pretty far behind now. The 4th gen Air with A14 is a huge improvement. This iPadOS announcement pretty much is gonna shut down sales of M1 iPad pros. There's literally only a tiny fraction of apps that need the Pro's s teen or cameras... there's no software to build new apps that won't just work on the Air.

Maybe Apple will do something for iPads in iPadOS 16!!

This isn't the first time Apple has had this kind of presentation. It happens regularly. I think the problem was too many people have unrealistic expectations.
Well Apple just released a massively upgraded iPad Pro within the last MONTH!! Without serious new software that M1 iPad Pro is just a fancy iPhone.

"I honestly do not understand why the M1 iPad even exists. What can it actually DO that the vastly cheaper iPad Air can’t?"

Nothing is the easy answer. Quality of life improvements, such as the camera, face id, quad speaker setup...hmm....is that really it? lol

I swear iOS is forced to do so many things and added so many things to it that it was not designed for originally that it is a total deformed Frankenstein monster now.

This is what Steve Jobs was good at it, he know where to go next and he had the courage to do it and not hold so tightly on its gold laying goose.

Do I see the native Apple Weather app in the Widget (first photo) for iPadOS? I am so done with the third-party weather and calculator apps that interrupts your undivided attention with the blaring ad banners and such. I am so done with having to pay to stop the pesky ads.

If Apple finally includes the native Weather and Calculator apps in iPadOS, this will be the massive rapture of enlightenment!

I see that finally they finally found a way to use the powerful iPad’s hardware. 🤣

I’m sorry, if ads are the issue with third party calculators and weather apps and you own an M1 based iPad Pro, pay for a d*** app. I can personally recommend PCalc, and, for a weather app with a cheap annual subscription that works on all of Apple’s platforms, Forecast Bar works very well for me.

Has it got a calculator yet, or do I still have to have an ad-filled 3rd party app for the most basic use of what computers were invented for?

Yes I am definitely starting to feel its age. But it still runs relatively good for most tasks and great for my basic needs. I have been eyeing a 2018 or 2020 11 inch but unless I can get a good deal I think I will ride this out another year.

David Johnson on AppleNewsnet.com summed it up well before we even knew what the hardware was:

"Anyone expecting any big breakthrough for the iPad Pro is setting themselves up for disappointment. Based on all rumors and leaks, this is setting up to be another S year for the device. That means a year with internal upgrades that will not move the needle and little else. Apple is not competing with anyone. They have no pressure to push harder. We might get a chip equivalent to the M1 in the Mac. But it won’t matter because there is nothing on the platform that can take advantage of it. A person with a 2018 model will not be able to tell the difference in performance. On the iPad Pro right now, speed is a meaningless spec."

He also has some good thoughts on how developers are hobbling the iPads progress. I think there's at least a tacit agreement between Apple and devs not to let the iPad off the leash and keep it as an OS Junior, it's a less lucrative platform for them than the Mac, especially with Apple's fees:

Apple needs this type of spin artistry in their PR department. They themselves have set high expectations for the iPad as being "your next computer" and "the future of computing" not just an oversized iPhone. Full-screen external monitor support, windowed apps (the new PIP Notes hints at this but it's only one app), Finder-like Files (you can't even see the size of a folder in Files) and a clean desktop that you can place files apps or folders on without the top-left grid limitations, are just a few totally realistic expectations. Forget Mac OS on an iPad, people just want similar functionality to what they've had for decades on Macs and PCs. This is not a software development problem, it's a business decision to limit the iPad to being a perpetually tertiary device (after an iPhone and Mac). Even the most dedicated "iPad-only" YouTubers have to use another computer to get certain things done.

You are right though that this isn't the first time Apple has done this, and people should hear it loud and clear that Apple isn't going to give them what they want (which is almost certainly already developed and ready). What they revealed yesterday reeks of something that has been sitting on a shelf for over a year. It's embarrassing how the iPad has been left to whither on the vine for years now. The M1 iPad should have just been called the iPad Pro S.

I didn't spin anything. A lot of people were expecting a Developer conference to be about presenting consumer devices for sale. That wasn't the point of the conference. A lot of people created false expectations in their mind about what Apple was going to do. And when Apple didn't come through, it was embraced as failure on Apple's part, which nothing more than logical fallacy at work.

This is the easiest answer to why the M1 iPad even exists: because it can.

Apple just gave us, for the same price, a vastly superior machine. More of everything. More power, more (peak) brightness, more RAM, more port bandwidth, more machine longevity.

A better question is: What is the downside here?

I hate saying this as its an annoying phrase on here, but if Steve were still around I honestly think the iPad would be a much stronger and capable device.

I think its time to accept Apple has no interest in taking the iPad to the next level. I think this is pretty much it now, just a big iPhone with multi tasking capabilities.

You seem really touchy about this subject, do you work for Apple? Apple has failed to deliver on the expectations they set for the iPad Pro. What exactly is the M1 iPad Pro with 16GB or even 8GB supposed to accomplish that the last 2-3 generations of Pros can't? Nothing! They've delivered universally acclaimed hardware without software to match, apparently to pump profits through multi-device sales. Their bromides about "making the best products and creating the best experiences for our users" is more transparent BS than ever. Selling people devices that can't accomplish basic computing tasks because of artificial limitations is unethical. I hope their sales suffer and they choke on returns until they get the message.

This is the second reply from you that has had a passive aggressive insult. I am done with this conversation.

External extended monitors, ethernet port. I guess I need to find an old laptop. Apple will find out by lack of sales and returns that they should give THEIR customers what they want. It is 2021. My guess is they think more iPad less MacBook Pro sales. The customer is always right and they could get MORE iPad Pro sales. Now their reputation is crap. They could also make more money by selling quality keyboard/cases like the Zagg Rugged Book Go for the 2020 12.9 in iPad Pro. It is super and I've had 2 Apple "Smart" keyboards fail. C'mon Apple. We are the ones putting money in your pocket.

Just buy PCalc, it’s a flat fee (and one I paid years ago). There are some IAPs, but they’re only of the tip jar sort. And if you’re not ready to commit to PCalc or only want to pay for some of the features, there’s PCalc Lite, which is ad free. And PCalc is a well known, well supported app that dates back to the m68k Mac days. If I may be blunt, it’s your fault for choosing an ad-filled calculator when a superior ad-free third party calculator has been on the App Store since 2008 and has supported the iPad since 2010.

Edit: But seriously, iOS is not like Android. On Android, it is, from my experience, legitimately difficult to find ad-free software in certain categories at any price (like file managers, to use one example that I’ve encountered on my Android devices). On iOS, on the other hand, it’s really easy to stick to a policy of avoiding software that has ads and doesn’t have ad removal IAP or requires a subscription to remove ads.
