I agree with you about today. If Apple had chosen to do big today after releasing the new awesome M1's, it could have created even more Apple fervor, especially for this considering their first iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, or iPad. Apple chose (probably last year or earlier) what today was going to show. As an end consumer, I am happy with today. It didn't wow me but, I wasn't looking to be "wow."

I do think expectations in MR land were off the charts. I think a lot of that was due to editors fueling the fire and forum members convincing themselves of a perceived truth that was never there to begin with.

As to the last time Apple went big with features, I think that that is rather subjective and what you or I consider big (or not due to disagreement) may be different for others here.

With today, I think the new features related to privacy and security with Safari are big. That may not even register on the 'happy' meter for many here but, I embrace it. While not it may not be an Apple magic feature, I think the health features today were big in that they will provide a more balanced medical profile for the user as well as family members. I see the direction Apple is going in that department and I like it.

As to previous presentation releases, I think Sidecar was big. I think silence unknown callers was a big feature. I also consider app tracking to be a big feature.

With the watch, I consider fall detection a big feature along with blood oxygen.

I could mention more but, no need filling the thread.
Actually, the fall prediction feature they announced today has me excited. I have a history of sprained ankles. Sometimes it’s mild sprains, but I was once knocked out of commission for two months. Just this past Friday, I sprained my ankle. It happens often enough that, if the watch could observe my gait and give me a warning for when my gait might cause issues that would result in a fall due to a sprained ankle, that alone would significantly improve my life by helping me to avoid sprains.

I'm still baffled as to why people think Apple was going to do anything special with the M1 iPad. Does anyone see them doing anything special or different for the Mac Pro or MacBook Pro that can't be done on the iMac or MacBook Air? The same for iPhone Pro and just regular iPhones. There are some feature limitations but they all do the same things. Apple wasn't and isn't going to change that.

There ya go. Your big feature for today may mean nothing to many others here and that's fine. They have their own feature they consider big or must have. That feature will benefit you each day and hopefully, raise the quality of your mobility and fitness (if applicable).

What many here fail to see so often is that Apple is speaking to millions and millions of people who have some core attitudes and attributes common. Beyond that, the pyramid of preferences and needs and expectations of certain apps is as diverse as the people themselves. As such, your big feature looks meaningless or trivial to some while others see it as good but not offering enough, as well as every increment in-between.

Too often people see the presentation and come away thinking it was a failure because it didn't resonate with them hardly at all. It is my contention, that Apple wasn't trying to resonate with every person on every feature mentioned. That is why you see so many angry, mad, or highly disappointed posts about today. If today wasn't member A's day, it is possible member A was looking at the presentation in the wrong light.

The type of greed that stifles innovation. They really don't know what to do with the Ipad anymore other than to bring these terrible incremental updates to it, otherwise it would compete with their MacBook line. They've kept the Weather and Calculator apps for the next IpadOS

Why do people keep harping on the calculator app? Is it so hard to download any of the far better third party options? I haven’t used the stock calculator in ages, I’ve been a PCalc user since at least the release of the first iPad.

Or they come away disappointed because they bought a device thinking that such and such was going to happen because Apple offered this or that with the purchase. People should buy their devices on what they do now not what they think Apple might do with them down the road and they won't be disappointed.

Absolutely. Hopefully, more and more Apple buyers will get that message and end the needless frustration.

This is the most disappointing Apple keynote I’ve ever seen. M1 with up to 16 GB RAM in the iPad Pro and they did absolutely NOTHING to take advantage of it. No pro apps. Not even real external display support or an update to files. Wow.
That’s why I waited didn’t buy the new iPad Pro. Ordered a base M1 air with 16gb ram with a 100 dollars off.

Was hoping for pop up windows/3 apps at same time at the very least. Guess least it’s better but not much different
I’m glad I opted out of replacing my 2018 12.9 and went with the M1 MacBook Air instead. The new features like XDR display and the extra RAM would be nice but really stunned iPadOS 15 is so minor in what’s new. Nothing to take advantage of the incredible hardware of the M1 iPad Pro, but that seems to be a recurring theme with iPad Pros and iPadOS.

People keep saying “Apple put the M1 in the iPad and didn’t do anything with it.” Well, here are a few things to consider:

1) The M1 is a gussied up A14X. The differences between the M1 and the A14 are almost identical to the A12Z and the A12 - double the performance cores, extra graphics cores, double the memory bus, etc. Apple’s not going to go through the trouble of making an A14X for the iPad Pro when the M1 is basically the same thing. There is nothing special about Apple putting the M1 into the iPad Pro as it’s the logical successor to the A12Z.

2) As another commenter pointed out, Apple is not going to add Pro-exclusive features to iPadOS and ignore the base model iPad which is the highest selling iPad. Much as macOS runs the same features on a MacBook Air as it does a Mac Pro, iPadOS has to be able to run the same on a five year old iPad Air 2 as it does on the M1 iPad Pro.

3) The extra memory in the 2021 iPad Pro is targeted primarily at multitasking, though the amount of memory available to each app is still greater than it was on the 2020 iPad Pro, and on 16GB models you can now run more apps at once without them resetting or being suspended.

4) Quite frankly, Apple doesn’t want you using your iPad as your sole computer. They want you to go out and buy a Mac and an iPad and an iPhone and to connect them all with paid iCloud services.

I use the calc hd pro!

Tim Cook is a supply chain guy. The reason the iPad uses the same CPU as the Mac is because it’s cheaper / easier for THEM to do it that way.

It has nothing to do with making the iPad better. The iPad has been vastly overpowered for years. Now with the M1 and 16gb of RAM that’s mostly just for decoration it’s a bit more overtly silly, that’s all. Here’s 16gb of RAM, and, by the way, your “pro” apps can only actually use five … really?

For my use case there’s simply nothing the iPad can do to justify its high price and the bizarre and arbitrary limitations Apple forces on it. Now that it has literally the same (very expensive) guts as the Mac line, those limitations become even more intolerable.

Imagine having to put aside your $2000 iPad and pick up your $2000 Mac to do a simple task Apple has decided to make painful or even impossible on the iPad even though it’s literally the same machine on the inside. Pure lunacy. No thanks.

I honestly do not understand why the M1 iPad even exists. What can it actually DO that the vastly cheaper iPad Air can’t?
Hold more apps in memory… 🤦‍♂️

Good decision. The M1 Air is amazing. That's the exact same model I recommended to my brother. He's been loving it. :)

Agreed. From the intro I could tell that Apple almost didn‘t even bother to try. Pretty boring stuff. I will be in no rush to update my devices in September, never mind trying the public beta, like I always have.
It has become clear at this point that they do not give a single **** about what iPad users and reviewers want. :( Everybody made the same requests and we were completely ignored.
