Good question. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one's around to hear it ... does it make a sound?
redAPPLE said:
yes it does :D .

No it doesn't. Its impact creates distinct vibrations in the air, but a human ear would need to be present to convert those vibrations into actual sound. :p

Jeez, someone's touchy, eh...?

Sorry if that came out all wrong ;) Didn't mean to sound stingy. It's just that this keyboard has so huge a cool factor that it is somehow sneaking into many unrelated threads on MacRumors… eh. :p

Back on the mouse thing. The 360º scrolling will be very cool to use with google.com/maps.

Edit: I was listening to my iTunes library while typing this and the "Mighty Mouse" theme started playing. O_O What are the odds. (I have a "Sathurday Morning Cartoons" playlist.

This is important for Shake users - not only for its 3-button property (the scroll ball is also clickable) but its ability to scroll 360' within a window. That is going to be awesome for big comps.

I searched the topic and found that nobody had mentioned Shake. That's sort of surprising considering it's at 16 pages now.

Does anybody else think that "Mighty Mouse" is the least apple-esque sounding name they could have chosen?

Not at all, Its comming to save the day of all those bitchen about a one button mouse. And its powerful/ has it all, just like Mighty Mouse. Hehehe

I do hope even with a bluetooth version of this they keep the old mouse, i love my bluetooth pro mouse. and just pushing down to click is so very nice. Tapping seems iffy

After years of speculation, Apple has finally introduced a multi-button mouse specifically designed to work with OS X Tiger.

Dubbed Mighty Mouse, the new input device has an optical sensor, touch-sensitive pads instead of moving click parts on the top, a 360 degree Scroll Ball, and force-sensitive side buttons that can be programmed by the user.

The mouse has a price point of $49 and is available immediately from the online Apple Store.

I want one!

Wrong again. Any number of animals could "hear" that sound. It does not require a human ear to convert it into sound. :p

Why is everyone going crazy about this mouse not being bluetooth? I for one am *very* happy that its a wired mouse instead of cordless. I can't stand all the incompatibilities of wireless, not to mention the wasted money and negative environmental effects of having to constantly change batteries.

Its not like that thin little cord is going to kill you.

So... i dont think they like us calling it a 2-click mouse. i assume there is no clicking besides the "tiny" speaker in the mouse?

Anyone who has delved deep into the iPod firmware knows that its speaker is capable of making many more sounds than just the clicking you here. It makes about 5 different sounds.
Assuming the Mighty Mouse uses the same speaker; the mouse could be capable of making many different sounds.

Buying it as soon as I can, only one question though, when will ti be available in the Apple Stores? I'm heading over there this Saturday with my fingers crossed.

Sure it will. Poor little bobby, hung himself with his mouse cord . . .

Anyways, I have the BT Apple mouse right now, this thing goes BT for a decent price, I'm all over it. At college that cord kills me, so much desk space wasted b/c of it. I'm saving for the keyboard right now.

But corded mice are a pain in the arse! And yes, they will kill me ( maybe not other people ) :p

You can use rechargeable batteries and thus minimise wasted batteries effects on the environment :)

I'm very sure a cordless version of this is coming out. Bluetooth is going to be around for years yet. They are working on a super fast version of BT too ( BT has been merged with another wireless technology for its next incarnation ).

Now that logitech's exclusive deal for laser mouse has expired with the manufacturer, hope Apple jump on this band wagon too.

Already available. Some people posted about having purchased at their local Apple store already. But it might be sold out by the time you get there. (Unless they restock)

Apple gets an A in advertising.

"Limit application access for children by pre-programming Mighty Mouse and locking System Preferences using parental controls. No matter how they work or play, Mighty Mouse makes everybody happy — all from one Mac."

Apple gets an A in advertising.

With a mouse, people read and go awesome. With this mouse and Tiger I can limit my youngster. And with any mouse you could limit you kids.

This would have been so much freaking cooler with a blue underbeam and a $29 pricepoint. Even with edu discount it's still $44!

I also don't understand why you need 10.4.2 to have the special "Dashboard & Expose Features" I've been doing that with multibutton mice for years.

Glad to see it though, and the 360 scrolling is well implemented.

Speaking of Shake. I bought the program and finished the first tutorial. All I can say is, Shake is unbelieveable cool. The node tree concept makes compositing in After Effects look totally outdated.

I just got mine from my local Apple Store. They had about 8 or 9 boxes on the shelf.

HEHE you are gonna piis #922 off.

lol I'm really mad too, but I was pointing out that it MAY be impossible for Apple to fit batteries AND sensors/speakers/trackballs into the same small enclosure.

Also, i think I'm changing my User Name to "Number 922". So If I come back like that, its still me. :D

EDIT: Grrrrrrrrrrrrr It's impossible to change your user name. :( Or is it?

Agreed. With a standard button mouse, your index finger pushes IN to get the click. If the surface of the new mouse doesn't move at all, it'll feel like you are pushing on a rock. Wonder how that will affect game play (yeah, I know, if I'm serious about games, get a gaming mouse)...

All this touch sensitive stuff makes me worry though. I find the movement of a click to be reassuring. I also wonder how tactile all that touch sensitive scrolling is. I have a Kensington Studio Mouse right now and it took me awhile to get used to the touch sensitve scroll wheel. I suppose I will have to try one in person before I buy one. Though it looks like I will love it, the force sensing side buttons that can bring dashboard up is the most tempting feauture for me.

I wonder if you can turn the click sound off? From Apple's site, it doesn't look like there is an option for that.

Actually, I went to the back of my computer to change around some wires and also got stuck in it and nearly electrocuted. It was pretty scary.

Excellent, they did make a corded one! Doing away with mechanical buttons ought to save a lot of hands.

For Powerbook user as I am cannot wait the day that the BT Mighty Mouse to come out, no more wire nor plug.
As for the batteries you can always use the rechargeable one.

I can't be sure but it makes sense that room will be taken up by touch sensors and impact sensors and speakers and trackball thingies. Sorry if that last post was a little ummmm... loud.
touch sensors are really thin. IIRC, it's just a capacitor in a wafer that sets off electricity according to the pressure applied. (don't stone me if i'm wrong)

Ever take apart a laptop touchpad? the sensor is very thin.

There could be plenty of room for BT.

my guess is that the power requirements weren't up to spec and that they wanted to spent a bit more time on it to do it right; as in a rechargeable dock.

I might get a wired one and a BT one when it comes out. We'll see. I can wait until school starts up again.

When do apple resellers begin to get these. Is it the same as apple stores? Im heading over to one today. Will they be in?
