My question about Mighty Mouse is this: What if I only want to scroll vertically? A lot of documents are wider than my screen (1600 pixels, as it happens), and when I scroll, I only want to scroll one way...vertically. Can you disable the horizontal scrolling, or make it necessary to hold down a key to alternate to horizontal scroll (which is what a normal scroll mouse does in most programs when you hold down Option? If not, this is like a really expensive headache, as far as I can tell.

There is an option to turn on and off a direction, but there doesn't seem to be a "hot-modifier key" option to toggle the settings.
I have played around with a Photoshop doc that was zoomed in, the vertical and horizontal scrolling is very intuitive, so accidental scrolling one way or the other isn't as likely as one might suspect.

So the mouse doesn't actually "click down" ? Can we get some confirmation on this? Cause I might have to cancel my order.

To end people asking the question over and over again, even though the answer is stated on almost every page:

:: YES, THE MOUSE CLICKS DOWN JUST LIKE THE PRO MOUSE ::

Yes you can disable horizontal scrolling or vertical, you can do so in the System Preferences. See is on on the bottom under the mouse

I don't believe a one-button mouse is a minimalistic design masterpeice. It's a road block. The whole "right click, left click" thing isn't that confusing - it's nearly insulting that Apple though people would get confused.

Dude, I talk to people every day who get confused between single-click and double-click. You'd think they'd know the difference between one and two. ;)

I'm good, actually. (but thanks for the offer :) )

And to clarify, I fully intend on buying this once apple releases a wireless/bluetooth version.

Now if they could incorporate the upcoming xbox 360 technology where you can recharge if you connected a cable to the mouse and comp, then I would be a very happy man.

Can we do it per active application? I'd like to disable horizontal scrolling in Safari and Word, but keep it in Photoshop.

You do know that somebody is bound to ask that question again, right?

Somedy should compile a FAQ and fave it inserted in the first post ^_^

There's no excuse. Many companies don't even make "wired" mouses anymore.

"But what about all those computers that don't have bluetooth?"

Thats why companies incorporate their own wireless technologies into their mouses designs, allowing a comp that isn't wireless capable, to become that. So you don't have to worry about it. It works either way.

But not Apple. The last time they cared about the consumer was in 84, and maybe that was just in the commercial.

I'm not a mac zealot, I haven't owned a mac in years, I currently use my selfbuilt pc and windows XP, although if I get a laptop it'll be next year and it'll be a new intel mac.

But I have to say, you're way off the mark. So many people simply do not want a wireless mouse, I don't want one for one.. for a start there's the response time, then it needs to be charged (and remember, this mouse makes sound.. silly idea, but bear that in mind), I don't like wireless mice and I never will. Apple is thinking of the consumer, thats how it makes a profit, its thinking of the largest demographic, make a wireless mouse and it will cost more, make a wired and wireless and manufacturing costs go up.. it would be stupid to make a wireless one when the factors that make a wired one better are so vital.. do you really want to have the only multi button apple mouse to be unusable for gaming? Amoungst other things..

i'm amazed at the number of people on this thread who think that there is a sizeable population of people out there who can't figure out left-click, right-click. The only people I've EVER met who didn't understand the concept were old-school Mac people who were like..."Right click?" A 4-year-old child knows what right-click means.

how is an interface that requires you to use the keyboard more "streamlined and simple" than one that allows you to rely 80+% on the mouse alone?

Have you guys ever played a friggin Nintendo? OOOOOH NO!!!! Two buttons! My brain can't figure out which one makes mario jump and which one makes mario go faster!!!!!!! It's basic hand-eye coordination, and if you can tell the difference between the CMD button and the Option button on a keyboard with more than 100 keys on it, then you should be able to tell the difference between button #1 and button #2. It's not "simpler" to press down Ctrl and then hit the mouse button. That's two actions. It's stupider. LESS intuitive, and more difficult to understand. I know and use probably 200 keyboard shortcuts on a daily basis. But I use the right mouse button at least as often, because my mind can figure out the difference between my middle finger and my index finger. Friggin' unbelievable, I know.

Great, technical post! I completely agree with you. If you prefer the one-button mouse then power to you - use it and enjoy it. But please, don't try to defend the one-button mouse by claiming that two-button mice are overly complicated. It truly is a ridiculous argument.

I find it interesting that this Mighty Mouse is touch sensitive. I'm willing to be open-minded and give it a chance. I'll try it out the next time I stop in to my local Apple Store. However, I have a feeling that all of this touch sensitive stuff wasn't developed because it works better than traditional tactile buttons but because of Apple's/Steve's ego trip. They've been holding out on making a two-button mouse for years, no... decades. They finally realized that many users perfer multi-button mice and that they should offer one. However, they couldn't just swallow their pride and be big enough to admit that two-button mice are preferred by most years, so instead they had to come up with something gimmicky.

Again, I'll try it out and I may be wrong about it. Perhaps this touch sensitive thing works really well but from the thoughts posted by a few MR members who've tried it already it doesn't seem to be a superior technology. I am skeptical. I love using the extra buttons on my MX510 for Expose and Dashboard. I wish the MX900 had drivers for the Mac.

I like macs alot (or maybe i should say i like the OS), I just think its lame that a 2700 dollar computer is only validated by a bigger screen 6 months after its bought.

Welcome to the world of computers. Any computer you buy is obsolete 6 months later, whether its a Mac or PC.

Thats a valid point, which is why I suggested they try to adopt technology similar to the new xbobx 360 controllers, which have an optional wire that actually charges the controller (mouse in this case) battery while plugged in.

It would be a good way to solve that problem.

Any furthermore, its jsut silly (in my opinion) to try to imply that the market isnt going toward all-wireless.

In ten years, no will use cords for anything but power supply, mark my words.

P.S. and I use a thrid party wireless mouse for gaming, and I've never had any issues (other than the batt dying) . . . but that happens on wireless videogame controllers, too . . . something that is standard on all the upcoming next gen consoles .

The so call "touch senstive" is for the mouse to know where you finger is, you still have to click the mouse inorder for the mouse to to excute the left or the right click. For same reason thats why Apple said that "it wouldn’t be fair to call Mighty Mouse a two-button mouse with one button."

I totally understand this, after having this happen several times to me.

I am more objecting to the price point. It ridiculous when, as you just mentioned, its common knowledge how quickly computers become obsolete.

Very cool! I'm glad to see Apple has finally introduced a "more than one-click" mouse. While I'm going to pick one of these up because I'm just the huge Mac fanatic I am, I will continue to use my Logitech MX1000. Honestly, it's the best mouse on the market and its compatibility with the Mac makes it a home run for me.

Either way, if Apple released a BT wireless version of the Mighty Mouse I will most certainly purchase one for my 12" PB's use. But I have a feeling the MX1000 is going to be sticking with my iMac for a long time to come.

So you have forgotten about how apple got their company name and "rendezvous"

Can you find me one well-known company that makes mouses and doesn't make a wired one?

Sorry, i meant NEW ones.

The new releases I've noticed never seem to be tethered mouses.

No one is investing money in technology for new wired controllers.

Could be worse. I paid $18,000 for a car, and the second the salesman handed me the keys, it was worth around $15,000.

It's awesome!!!

I just purchased this mouse at the apple store and I'm using it right now. It rocks! All the concerns about the touch sensitive crap is dumb! It works flawless and is very user friendly! Highly recommend

Well... it did take them quite a while to figure out that people did not want a one button mouse.

And the stupid hockey puck design of the original iMac mouse makes you question how smart they are.

sigh.... everybody does stupid things sometimes.... even Apple.
