My thoughts about all of this...
Having read a considerable amount about this new Apple product (though certainly not all 991 posts, so no comments from the Peanut Gallery ["that's been covered!" in post #457])... I've decided to have my own say. I have not seen one in person so this all just speculative...
Shape
I have never liked the pill shape. It's is uncomfortable for extended periods of time, when compared to an ergonomic mouse, that is. I guess it's all in what you get used to. I like a mouse that fits my hand. This pill shape doesn't. The only thing it accomplishes is that is perfectly symmetrical so that it is uncomfortable for both right and left handed users equally. The solution to Lefties is to simply make a Left Handed mouse. 10% is a lot of people to make happy. Why doesn't Apple lead the charge in offering both?
Wired with no Blue Tooth in Sight
You'd think that Apple would really want to do this whole thing up right. They've been anti-multi buttons for ages now and to to ignore Blue Tooth completely is a bit befuddling. Why did they do this? Money, of course: to sell the mouse to the early adopting "I-gotta-get-myself-an-Apple-multi-mouse" types and then to sell them another mouse in 6 months when they release the BT model. Hopefully, the early adopters will pave the financial road so the BT model comes in at the same $49 and the current wired model gets bumped to $29 for those with existing systems and free for those buying a new computer.
Short Cord
From what I understand, the cord is about 27". Why? I just can't get why Apple's mice are plagued with this situation. Just give us another 3 feet, people! I went to my closet to see some of the wired stuff I had tucked away a couple of years ago when I went cordless. Logitech gives a full 6 feet! Plenty! Some people want to keep their computer somewhere else besides right on top of themselves. Does the wire really costs that much? I know that Apple would prefer the user to attach the mouse to the USB on the keyboard or to the front of the computer when available such as the new G5s, but how about what we want?! I actually think that the best solution would be a cord that was completely retractable. It would wind inside the mouse in some engineering feet of Apple magic [terrific for travel]. And then, you could pull out the appropriate amount of cord you need, up to 5 or 6 feet and lock it in with perhaps a foot or more still inside for those who need less. Simple.
Side Buttons
I dunno about the buttons on either side. I LOVE my back/forth buttons on the Left side of my Logitech MX900. Having the thumb do all of the page dancing makes so much more sense than a thumb and a ring finger. And this only works if Apple allows CLICKING for those buttons. I just checked their site and it might just only be there to open Apps [Dashboard, etc.]
Only 4 Buttons
I guess it's a start, but I think 4 Buttons are a little on the limited side. I like my Logitech's 8 programmable buttons & scroll wheel. Perhaps those who have been sitting on the sideline with only a single-click mouse are rejoicing, but everyone else who have been using PC USB mice all along just can't too excited about a few extra buttons.
Design
I love Apple, but they sometimes get too hung up on how their stuff looks instead of how it will ultimately help the user to work. Generally their stuff looks better than everything else AND is easier to use. But in the case of their mouse, it just isn't. In my opinion, the decision to go with the same exact shape and look of their old mice is because they want to be able to say "we're still right... Our shape is the way to go and because we have sensors instead of clickable buttons, we're really not waffle-ing on the issue of One Button vs Multi-Button." I can really imagine Steve being very adamant about this is in meetings devoted to the device... He hates having to backtrack and say he was wrong. I forsee he'll have some major spin later this year when he releases a Video iPod, considering how he's been so anti-video so far whenever this thing has come up. I know that he's eating serious crow right now with the whole Intel Chip thing. Fortunately, I believe he's willing to eat crow rather than keep going on a path that won't deliver. He's stubborn, but only to a point. The mouse is a compromise. That's all. "It's the best of both worlds! It's a single button mouse for those use to it and it's a multi-button mouse for others!!"
Track Ball
I can't wait to get down to Knox Street Dallas to check this ***** out. It sounds like it might be cool, but we'll have to wait and see.
Fake Click Sounds
According to some (arstechnica.com), this is cool. Again, I'm gonna have to wait to make my own mind up on it. Of course, the fake click sound in the iPod is quite nice and adds to the experience. I could turn it off, but leave it on most of the time because it seems right. I can only assume that this adds to the mouse in the same way.
I hope Apple sells a billion of these, but my money's safe on this addition. It will have to get a whole lot more sophisticated for me to open the ol' wallet.
In my Opinion this is simply a case of too little, too late.
