my colleague bought the nexus

it crashed several times on the first of day

when i first saw it, i thought it was pretty cool

after the first crash, he was pissed and i was disappointed

i was really considering buying it but not anymore after the crashes :(

That obviously means that the Nexus 7 is junk. Thank you for sharing that with us all. Tell your colleague I said thanks. Have a super day.

Geez what a dumb post.

Apples and oranges. You can't compare raw specs - you need to compare benchmarks because performance is what matters. I would expect Java apps to require a faster CPU - and more memory - to come close to performing as well as apps written in a language designed for compiling (e.g. Objective C or even C#).

C# uses the same Bytecode/Virtual Machine concept as Java (Common Language Runtime, CLR). Java VMs tend to be a bit smarter, therefore faster than CLR (especially the new Java garbage collectors are very good).

Java won't beat Objective-C in benchmarks, but it's damn close. You simply need to be a better coder to produce well running Objective-C/Cocoa code compared to Java, which many people simply aren't.

This attracts me more than the full sized iPad. I only have a small college back and, to me, this is more stylish and trendy. Yes, I just used the word trendy.

No.

The resolution is lower than $199 devices.

I would think after 264 posts in this thread that question wouldn't need to be asked.

The PPI is equal to that of the Original iPhone. lol

iPad mini vs Nexus 7v

35% Larger, 23% Less Pixels, 60% More Expensive.

I love Apple like most people on this board. However, some of your loyalty is blinding.

The bottom line is the iPad Mini is overpriced. Period.

Like all Apple products, including the iPhone 5, people complain and groan until they actually hold one and see and feel that it is in a class by itself.

There was no bad mouthing of the competition. Just a statement of fact. 29% more screen real-estate in portrait, 67% in landscape. FACT. Speed metrics, FACT but hey you paid $130 less for it, so don't feel bad. You got what you paid for.

The way i look at it... save yourself $100 and buy the Nexus 7... come back in a year and tell me about how wonderfully supported you feel?

In my book, one of the biggest advantages Apple does not tout is the product life-span.... from what I've seen, Apple products tend to stay useful at least 1.5 to 2 times longer than competitors.

I'm just saying.

Comparing the new 32GB Nexus 7 to the 32GB Mini, the Nexus has a far faster CPU, a slightly better GPU, a standard USB port, a higher resolution screen and thus a far higher PPI, but yet costs over $180 less. Sure, the new iPad Mini will be a hit.... People will also surely love the new crApple maps app on iOS 6, which will work even better since the wi-fi mini will not a have a GPS, unlike the Nexus 7, and passbook will work great, especially with no NFC capabilities, again, unlike the Nexus 7. What a failure of a product Apple has excreted...

why bother even commenting...

But we, my fellow Brit, are enjoying two year EU mandatory warranty as well as the 20% VAT on top.

Americans get it cheaper but have much worse consumer protection.

Can't lick both sides of the lollipop.

Suppose I cant argue with that!

For £269, its sat at a pretty decent price and I reckon it will make a killing. The A5 is still a good CPU, and the smaller screen rocking the same res as the iPad 2 will look pretty good! Not retina, but not bad all the same.

Agreed. They have to shorten these product cycles because people are going to try and compare Galaxy Tab2 and Surface to new iPad, even though new iPad came out months earlier.

Agree about shortening cycles, but why wouldn't you compare the best Samsung to the Best iPad? If I'm buying today, why should I give apple brownie points for getting to market 5 months sooner?

They would of had to cram the resolution of the retina display on the current retina iPad for it to work on the Mini, and maintain the pixel doubling. That just isn't feasible at this point in time. I really am surprised so many people thought they would put a retina display in the Mini. Using the iPad 2 resolution is perfect, all of the apps fit the screen well without having to create a new resolution for the developers to develop for.

It is a higher density then the iPad 2 because its smaller, so I don't think it will be as noticeable as everyone seems to think. I don't think we will see a retina display on the iPad mini for at least two years. We will probably see the screen get taller before we see it go retina.

I do wish they set the price at $299 though, it just seems so much more expensive at $329 even though it's only $30 more.

The iPad mini, as described, will have the same pixel density as an iPhone3. If Apple were to "cram" in the retina resolution, they'll have the same pixel density as an iPhone 4/5. That's not so crammed.

When did MacRumors become Applewhinging.com? All I see is page up and page down of people just complaining about everything Apple does nowadays.. Why are you even here? If you don't like it don't buy it. Buy your Nexus 7s or Kindles if you think they are better. It's as simple as that.

Yeah if you can't say anything positive, why say anything it all? It upsets people who are wedded to Apple products, no matter how mediocre they become.

True, Apple shouldn't have to put up with criticism, after all they are Apple. One's only choices are buy it or shut up, obviously.

Perhaps if you don't like the whinging here, you could leave? Sounds as valid as the other way around.

Ipad Mini / Google Nexus 7

Model 16GB Wifi / 16GB Wifi

Price £269 / £199

Resolution 1024X768 / 1200X800

PPI 163 / 216

Processor A5 Dual Core / Tegra 3 Quad core

Utterly dissapointed with Apple.

Utterly disappointed is how I feel about my Nexus 7. The screen res might be higher that the iPad, but the quality sucks, battery life is just plain pants, and the apps are abysmal.

So if a new 4th generation ipad was just introduced...why is there not a price cut across the board on the ipad 2 and 3rd generation models?

Very confused. Oh, and that $329 price point sucks.

This. They're still selling the 2nd gen. I wonder what they're going to do with the 3rd gen.

I purchased my Nexus in July, and since have had perhaps 4-5 crashes total. Compared to my iPad 1, which crashes around every 5-10 minutes on iOS5, I am extreme happy with the Nexus. Perhaps that guy got a DOA one?

Did you compare a quad core running the latest OS versus a sluggish Ipad 1 running on a pretty updated OS?

Yeah...um...no.

I'm curious how the iPad mini at $329 will compare to the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" at $299. I have an iPad 3, but the wife is looking for something purely to read and watch movies on during lunch at work. I'm looking forward to seeing the iPad mini in store and hearing what reviewers have to say about the Kindle in comparison.
