Here's a fresh whine for the pile...

So $329 for 16, which is a $130 premium over the 16 kindle.

But the 32 is $429 for the mini but the kindle only goes up $50 to $249. So if you want 32 gigs, the difference in price is $180.

Seriously, storage is so dirt cheap these days. Apple really needs to charge $100 for an extra 16 gigs of storage? Across the board, mini, 2, and 4, they should be going up $50 for the jump from 16 to 32. At least going 32 to 64 it's a bigger jump so they could still justify $100 for that gap, but it should still be 50 bucks cheaper than it is now.

Where are you getting the idea of paying a "premium?" My point is that "retina" has to do with ppi and not with some special feature. And while it does not have the ppi of the much more expensive iPad 4, it has a higher ppi than the more expensive iPad 2.

I guess you're a committed Apple customer because you didn't notice the premium in the price. It's a more basic product, missing features like high-dpi, yet it's priced as a premium small tablet. Pretty simple really. You're trying to somehow contort your argument to say that this smaller tablet is the same product as the larger one, and should be compared price wise accordingly. LOL!

True, Apple shouldn't have to put up with criticism, after all they are Apple. One's only choices are buy it or shut up, obviously.

Perhaps if you don't like the whinging here, you could leave? Sounds as valid as the other way around.

I come to this site to get information about Apple products. Why do you come here?

I purchased my Nexus in July, and since have had perhaps 4-5 crashes total. Compared to my iPad 1, which crashes around every 5-10 minutes on iOS5, I am extreme happy with the Nexus. Perhaps that guy got a DOA one?

And yet I've the complete opposite experience with N7/iPad1.

Google Reader can't refresh feeds without hanging, Plex experiences issues, and then the keyboard will refuse to hide when it asks me to send a report of what went wrong, and the range of the wifi is just plain abysmal. Can't remember when my iPad crashed. It might not be as quick as it was, but it's a lot more stable than the Nexus.

I also don't think the Android experience is that slick. It might allow all sorts of customisations, but I'd be more impressed if it could handle something as simple as the stock music player displaying compilations properly....

A possible silver lining?

I guess shareholders are just going to have to hope the financials are incredible. I suppose that the powers that be had a good inkling of them before setting pricing on the new products. Their smugness in pricing might herald remarkable figures for Q4 such that they've no worries for Q1 even with bloated pricing.

Another thing I haven't seen mentioned yet. While there's not a huge difference in resolution between the kindle hd 7 and the mini, the kindle can display 720 video content while the mini doesn't have the resolution and has to scale it down.

Hilarious to see everyone hating on a product that they haven't held in their hands yet...

I'm sorry, I need to hold a product in my hands to feel that it's a lower screen resolution? Or to know that it costs $130 more than other options?

Simple answer: because they can, and people are suckers. In fact: "There's a sucker born every minute."

Same as you, and to discuss them. You have to ask yourself, though, what sort of a person comes to a site for information about a company's products but only wants to hear good things, and not criticisms.

From experience the iPad 2 still performs really great. I still have mine. Just because it doesn't have retina doesn't mean it should be brushed aside.

the screen rez is too low and makes eyes hurt very fast.... once i got my iphone4 with retina i could never go back..

I'm glad someone mentioned this ... I think that's what will sell the product.

I've used a Nexus 7 - amazing product but you have to hold the item to get an appreciation for it. It's just so versatile.

The challenge is can they roll out the Nexus 7 to places (globally) that many many people actually touch it.

The iPad mini, I think, will be a success because like many Apple products, once you actually touch, hold and use the item you don't get a real appreciation for it.

.

Pen and paper still performs really great, so why have an iPad at all, by that argument.

Likes: Size, slate color option. I also liked the light shots at samsung in the presentation. Facts, not stupid commercials depicting hipsters and old people.

Dislikes: Price (Should have been at $299) and should be running the A6 like the iPhone 5, keep the A6X for the big boy.

That is true if you are nice to your suppliers. If you keeping fighting with your trading partners and switching suppliers, you end up with just Hynix. If this trend continues Apple may be scavenging older devices for parts.

So - a refurb Ipad2 (direct from Apple which is essentially a brand new product) is now CHEAPER than an Ipad Mini... makes no sense... the mini should have been $249 max... but I guess they were stuck now due to the screwed up iTouch pricing (which should have stayed at $199 and NOT $299)

Apple might have just jumped the shark today...
