I don't get what market Apple is trying to target here.

The mini is too expensive to compete with the Fire and Nexus and the rest of the budget market. And there's no mid-range tablet market worth chasing.

Anybody understand this?

Yes, very simple. They are targeting buyers that are willing to pay for the ability to sync and link with all your iOS and MacOS devices, use far more apps than anyone could ever possibly want, own products that have value, and continue to be ranked #1 by most every leading publication. If you don't fit into this group, purchase elsewhere. As I said, very simple.

What have I done not to fit in?

There was a heap of pre release trolling about how crap an 8GB mini would be which was expected at a price of $329. But Apple did not do that.

The 16GB that costs $12? Wow, I wonder how much R&D went into deciding to use 16GB instead of 8GB. Thanks Apple. At $329, 32GB should have been included.

It is a little saddening to see Apple protecting their profit margin with the iPad mini rather than using their weight to really challenge other smaller tablets and woo customers away who are looking at those products. I've been waiting for this announcement so as to decide between the iPad or iPad mini. Given the new specs for both, I'll probably end up getting the 4th gen iPad - more bang for my buck.

Exactly their plan. They don't want real users to abandon their better products for a cheaper one. Very smart on their part.

The primary job of every company (and you personally) is to protect profit margins. Would you offer to work a lower position for less money where you work? Why should they?

Not true. You got the iPad 2 resolution right but the iPhone 4 was 960x640, lower than any of the iPads.

The problem with my post, is I assumed the gentlemen I was answering was correct, he said that the iPhone 5 had a higher resolution, which would mean the iPhone 4(s) did too since they just extended the screen 176 pixels, in reality the iPhone 5, though having more pixels in its longest direction 1136 vs 1024 has fewer in its shorter direction 640 vs 768, and ends up having fewer total pixels 727,040 vs 786,432.

What am I missing? What could be difficult about adding a phone? You can hold it in one hand but . . . You can talk to Siri, but . . . Why do I need to tote around a tablet AND phone? Does anyone else have a phone on their tablet? Wouldn't adding a phone make a category killer? The head tech has left the house?

Years ago I was trying to figure out how to add a readable display to my phone. Now I want all in one. This old grouch is never satisfied.

The iPhone 4 & 5 displays are far more readable then the iPand mini. Bend your elbow a bit and bring it closer to your nose. Like magic, it looks bigger!

Maybe you must have a limp wrist that you can't lift the first gen iPad? Your eyesight must be so bad that you needed Retina Display to see web pages better?

Lay off the Kool Aid.

I don't need Retina Displays to SEE better. It's all 'eye candy' BS.

Looks like someone has some vision problems.

There is no need for the isight camera on the back....
Would have rather seen no isight for cheaper price or an A6 processor.....

You mean as opposed to the product that is sold at less than it costs, hoping to make it up on post purchase sales? You have been fooled into thinking the price for a Kindle is a fair price because they are willing to take a loss.

No-one cares how a company makes a product work at a particular price, all they care about is price. I'm not interested in a fair price, I want a good price.

My friend bought a Kindle and she buys lots of books on it and has never complained, except when Apple colluded illegally with publishers to raise the price of ebooks. Now that they've come down again she's never been happier.

So I guess you're going to rail against "$100" or "free" iphones, after contract of course. People are still paying through the nose through their wireless plans. AT&T or whoever is losing money on the phone but screwing them later.

Can't tell if you're serious or sarcastic

My point is if they priced it at $200 they could've pushed Amazon out of the budget market and taken their market share. Instead, they priced it right in between the budget market and the premium tablet market where no mid-range market exists. Because of that, the device will end up cannibalizing sales of the full-size iPad and maybe the iPod touch. If you're an investor you have to wonder what the hell they're doing

...
You seem to be ignoring all the retina products, the iphone 4, the iPad 3, and now the laptops, all of which had higher resolution than anything available from anyone else at the time of release, right?

After all Apple's hype about Retina (including today!), it's hard to buy it when out of the other side of their mouth they try and tell us that resolution doesn't matter and lower ppi is just fine.

Spec matter, my point was it's not just specs.

You have a very valid point if you don't want to buy the product if it doesn't have feature/spec X or Y or if you don't like what you get for the price.

As mentioned Apple has been selling products well and there's usually other better spec'd better products available. So what the 'whiners' are complaining about is they keep reading fail this/fail that based only on specs... well obviously it isn't just that.

Basically, they've seen they same 'spec-only' complaints and therefore the 'product is going to fail' argument over and over after each apple product release.

Hey, it could be right one day, but so far its been wrong.

.

So basically they got lazy and took the path of least resistance. It just couldn't be done. Impossible. After all, this isn't the richest company on the face of the planet trying to sell the most expensive 7 inch tablet.

Just because they are the richest company in the world doesnt mean they can produce a product, just because you think they can. Can they get a single panel made? Sure they can, but when you need 10 Million of them and the price cheap enough that you can sell the mini for less then the non-mini, it becomes an issue. That issue hasn't been addressed. The problem I have with the whole day is the iPad 4 coming out. What does that mean for March/April are we going to have a new iPad then or not? Did they move the iPad because the TV is coming out in April? Are we going to start to see twice a year products for lots of things?

Blatantly just cashing in on their success now. A new Retina iPad at this stage is pure greed - a 7 month life cycle is disgraceful.
I think they did it to make the original iPad still attractive compared to the mini.
Pretty sure many non-technical (and even many tech geek-) customers will have the "good enough" feeling with the mini.
So they also have to focus on the original iPad to attract tablet gamers, coming office users and so on.
Possible side effect could be that the second hand market makes almost new iPad 3s and 2s affordable for customers on a budget.
So they open themselves a new market with new (future) customers, iTunes users..without having to introduce a new low priced product.

And yes, maybe they are greedy, too :)
Capitalism sucks.

Yeah I'm with most of you, I was going to get it until they announced the price. Really think this should go for $249 tops at 16 GB.

They had a chance to really give a fatal blow to all those Android tablets and they missed it. They should've killed their iPod Touch line and replaced it with the iPad Mini.

The above could be true, but for different reasons... come out with an iPad mini without Retina before holiday season.

Wait for prices of retina displays to drop even more, then come out with an iPad 2 mini with Retina, dropping the price of the of the original iPad mini to the $250 range.

I have no doubt the mini will be a cool product in a couple years, but for now this is a huge mistake. If it was $199, I'd say it was just perfect. However, the Nexus 7 blows this thing away for a MUCH lower price. This thing is just so limited and is running 2-year-old technology while the competition is charging less for much more functionality and higher-rez screens.

Google, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Samsung are celebrating right now. Apple could have easily blew them out of the water, but for probably short-sighted reasons, chose not to.

I agree with you up to a point on this. Yes, a commercial company's primary job is to make a profit and that can be done by maintaining a solid profit margin, but it is not the only way. It is possible to reduce the profit margin, but increase volume which would expand the user base and have the downstream effect of more purchases via the apple ecosystem (i.e. music, apps and movies).

I think you are right that they don't want to cannibalize too much from their iPad sales for their "real users," but it is a fine between doing that and not getting the influx of new users they could potentially get via this new offering by being more aggressive with their pricing and making up the profits (plus some) via their various revenue streams that go beyond just the one-time purchase of hardware.

Nah. Maybe this isn't a perfect product but it meets my needs.

I've used android tablets at work... wouldn't spend my money on them so I'll grab this instead.
