Wow 1024x768.. nice one Apple.

Yup
The Barnes and Noble NookHD 7 inch will have a better screen and more storage and will be much cheaper.
You really need to be a fool with your $$$ to spend it on an Apple tablet these days.

Apple: look how much better our new iPad mini is than the Nexus...oh btw it's $130 dollars more. -facepalm-

A 16gb Nexus is $249 and a 16gb iPad Mini is $329. That's only $80 more, unless I'm missing something.

Comparing the new 32GB Nexus 7 to the 32GB Mini, the Nexus has a far faster CPU, a slightly better GPU, a standard USB port, a higher resolution screen and thus a far higher PPI, but yet costs over $180 less. Sure, the new iPad Mini will be a hit.... People will also surely love the new crApple maps app on iOS 6, which will work even better since the wi-fi mini will not a have a GPS, unlike the Nexus 7, and passbook will work great, especially with no NFC capabilities, again, unlike the Nexus 7. What a failure of a product Apple has excreted...

So buy yourself the Nexus since it's clearly what you want anyway. Enjoy regretting buying it after a few weeks.

I always encourage Apple users to venture out and try the Android products or Windows products to compare. I have done so with my phone, computer, and tablets and in every case I have returned to Apple. Specs mean nothing unless the OS is well built. I am yet to find another that works as smoothly as iOS does, even with lower specs.

All this complaining really reminds me of when Apple introduced the first Macbook Air. Overpriced. old tech. Said to fail. Nobody will buy it.

And where do we stand now?

Sure the Mini is expensive (I NEVER expected 250 though) but as has been mentioned before, with Apple products it's not all about the price. Apple is not per se a "logical" choice. But I prefer the OS over anything else (have had a look at other tablets and ended up with a Nook Color), but for my needs the iPad is just too big. Seems, my patience was worth it. And I'm more than willing to pay the premium just for the fact that they finally, finally have a smaller option. With or without retina...it's better than iPad 2. And I would have bought a small iPad the moment they'd brought it out.

But than again, I keep my Apple products for a longer time period than the annual product cycle... (i.e. I know that there will be improvements in the future when I buy it. I can live with that, because the moment I buy things, they meet my needs)

My maths suggest the UK price conversion and then 20% VAT take the price closer to 250, so I understand where people are coming from....

And you understand Apple Tax?

I just checked in the store and I SEE NOW!!.

In the UK the new iPod Touch with the Same SOC? is £249:

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch

And the new iPad Mini with the EXACT SAME SOC? Is TWENTY pounds more!

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipad

What the hell? I can see their shares dropping, I mean an iPod or for twenty pounds more an iPad? So yeah, which are the many going to buy?

Actually I bet give it a couple of months and people will start to complain about it's size because it's too wide to hold one handed. You watch. And I wonder how many will get dropped and break because of that.

Wrong! Because when the Air was launched it didn't have any real competitors on the market, even now we only just got the Ultrabooks on the market.

The iPad has lots and lots of competition in the market.

Wrong indeed. What about all those netbooks? They already where there. And in some way the MBA was competing with those...because it was more portable than all other MacBooks.

And I was only saying that all the whining and complying really reminded me of that time. It was SO said to fail because of price and old tech, the MBA.

I would hardly call a netbook costing £250 a competitor to a much more powerful 11" Mac costing FOUR TIMES as much!

Oh and who was it that said Apple can't make billions from the App store? Did they not announce something like 35 BILLION Apps being downloaded so far? Taking a 30% cut from every sale, and then a further 30% cut from every in app sale?
Hmm...

Not only is the iPad mini is not as good a deal as a Nexus 7, Google is about to up the ante with its N7's, upping the higher end 7's to 32 GB @ $250 and bumping the 16 GB models to $200. So in reality, the price difference between the two is even more.

Add into the fact that they might release a $100 N7 and a Nexus 10 tablet made by Samsung, it looks like Google might actually have a chance to break into the tablet arena. People will buy this for $329, so it may be like PC's and Macs, where users buy for aesthetic reasons or based off their bias towards one operating system or another. Personally, I love both- I hate the iPhone's size and limitations which would cause me never to consider it, but I love my iPad 2- still holds up well and is a bargain price.

didn't the MBA compete with other thin notebooks (with better features) and sub-notebooks? It wasn't the thinnest notebook for it's time and it was also kinda of pricey too.

Lack of retina means this will probably be one of the shortest product life cycles in history - maybe as short as my iPad3 :)
Apple couldn't make the iPad mini retina, it had to be 1024x768. Unlike Android, when Apple releases a new screen resolution for iOS app developer have to update their apps to support that new resolution. The two iPad (4:3) resolutions that Apple has made devs support are 1024x768 and 2048x1536. Apple is relying on the fact that the iPad mini will run current iPad apps, so the iPad mini had to be one of these two, developer don't want to have to rewrite their apps for some new resolution, 2048x1536 is just too high for a 7/8" tablet in terms of graphics power required and cost, so it had to be 1024x768. This meant the iPad mini could not be retina and many similar sized Android tablets are higher resolution.

There you go. iPad is not exactly competing with all those cheaper tablets, according to your argumentation. Different OS approach for example. Maybe with the Surface RT...oh wait...different size. again.

No, on spec, the iPad is going to directly compete, as I stated, the iPad has LOTS of competition. Apple cannot simply produce a low spec device and charge full wack for it and expect to get away with it.

Then again I guess we can all assume the iPod Touch is way OVER priced now considering the iPad Mini's pricing?

No, because the Netbooks had Atom processors, tiny SSD drives, were cheap, came with Linux or for a bit more Windows. Low spec and cheap.
The Mac Air was hardly aiming at them. It had no competitor on the market when it was launched.

Oh.......

And BEFORE people start stating I'm an anti Apple Troll simply because I fail to be blinded by the reality field..

I happen to think the iMac and the new iPad are AWESOME! The new iPad is VERY good value IMO, it's almost laughable that one is great value with obscene power (Having an iPhone 5 I know just OW good the A6 is! ;)), the other... well... rubbish and poor value.

But the new iMac is probably the best Mac now.

They did before, didn't they?

I don't. The iPod touch is sold as a music player and a camera. Different target group.
Nobody is complaining how overpriced the iPhone is compared to the much much bigger iPad. Got the idea?

You say that, watch those shares after mid next year earnings call. And the iPhone IS overpriced. Fact. Even tech journalists admit that!

They will now look at the new Touch, then look and the Mini iPad and think... so twenty quid more and I get a MUCH bigger screen with MUCH lower PPI and the same processor...:confused::confused::eek:

And what makes it more difficult IS the fact the full iPad is now MANY times more powerful then the Mini iPad. With a MUCH higher res screen..
You seriously can't help but think Apple dived into it's spare parts bin, I reckon Mr Ive's was gritting his teeth doing that video for the iPad Mini! He's a Brit he'll think the pricing is stupid I bet.

True, Apple shouldn't have to put up with criticism, after all they are Apple. One's only choices are buy it or shut up, obviously.

you do realize that this isnt an apple forum, right? they arent scanning this, looking for nerd-enthusiasts opinions on their business model. instead theyre busy designing products for the normal consumer and making billions doing it.

you arent the target market and never will be. so all youre whining on this forum does is annoy other enthusiasts.

Funny that you would say that. I purchased my Nexus 7 in late July, and have used it almost every day since. My old iPad 1 has been turned off for more than a month, and recently I purchased a new Android phone to replace my similarly terrible iPod touch. I love both of my Android devices, and certainly do not regret buying either of them. Time for a new come back...

Do people really buy like this?

I don't buy things just for the fun of buying, but when I need them.
When I want to buy a music player I'm not going to look at tablet PCs. Not portable enough. Not primarily made for the task of playing music.
When I want to buy a Tablet for e.g. reading as the major purpose, I wouldn't look at a small screen Device (iPod touch, iPhone, competitor's options) because there really is no point in reading for a long time on such a small device.
See where I'm going?

I still believe in different devices for different tasks/needs. It just not as simple as "it has a bigger screen and is only a little more expensive so I'll buy that because I'll get a better price-performance ratio.

Too bad the Nook isn't useful for jack ****

Do you honestly expect Apple to sell this device at cost like Amazon and Google do?

Apple sells devices.

Amazon sells books.

Google sells...you.

Nope, but at the price they set it to it's a damn HUGE Mark up! They could EASILY have taken $30 of the price, £30 of the price. But no. it's Apple therefore mark up.
As I said, the new iPad is value IMO, the iPad Mini is poor value.

And Google sells me? Well I hope you don't use Facebook.... or Twitter....

that's funny because I think I remember it always being compared a Sony Vaio model released later 2008 (after launch of course) and the Vaio, although not as thin, was only slightly thicker and a popular laptop. There were thin laptops at that time... but Nexus 7 is thicker than the iPad mini (10.5 mm vs 7.x mm).
My point is that I think (I could be wrong), there were competing notebooks about the same weight and thickness, but Apple had the nice teardrop shape and lacked stuff like a optical drive.
