Apps??

I would buy one if they let me run apps... now have to wait for a jailbreak if I do it.

Blah update...just an 1080p update. They could have done that last year, instead of waiting 2 years. Would have been fine being a silent update.

Boring, what a useless update.

So basically they just added 1080p output since the Apple TV2 can play back 1080p.

So no kind of app-store or similar where you can get third-party apps? From what I read most people jb their Apple TV's only to get apps that apple would probably accepted in an app store by Apple, so it seems strange that they still won't open one.

That's a dissappointment, the difference between 720p and 1080p aint that huge so i'll still probably just stick with my 2G Atv

Glad I'm not the only one who sees this as abit of a let down.

Been waiting since September 2010 for an update and all we get is 1080p and a new interface. No reason to upgrade from an ATV2, well done Apple for doing nothing!

Even the iPad to me seems a let down, nothing really that new or great...

Oh and I'm not an Apple basher, just expected and wanted more for me to part with my cash...

PS3 + 1TB internal stacked with video + PMS software + Mac > ATV... still.

Unless Apple has something in that thing which they didn't reveal, it's still not besting the PS3. Pity, but then the PS3 with Playstation Media Server is superb.

It looks like they have the irritating "Top Movies," "Top TV shows," and "Top Podcasts" advertising which drives me crazy on my first-gen ATV.

I will probably still buy one once refurbished models are available in a month or two, I've been waiting for 1080p for a long time.

Since I don't have an ATV2 (or 1) I can't see this as a let-down, although I kind of understand where existing ATV2 owners are coming from.

As soon as the UK store comes back online I'll be placing my order :D

I'll be sticking to my original AppleTV (gen1) until this new AppleTV does apps, games, video subscriptions from providers like Hulu, ESPN, HBO, etc.

(Posted this in the Coverage thread, thought it would be more appropriate here)

I know it's early on specs but does anyone know if the new model supports:

- DTS Sound for 1080P movies.

I've ripped my Blu-Ray's with multiple tracks, the first being stereo for iDevices as iOS defaults to that track and the rest DTS in mkv. My Pioneer AVR supports everything, but the only way to play DTS is through a jailbroken AppleTV with third party plugins. The latest Handbrake now supports DTS in m4v containers which may solve the next issue...

- File Formats

Currently only mp4, m4v, et all are supported leaving mkv out (doubtful it will be supported). Easy resolution would be to remux my mkv's as DTS sound can be used in m4v containers.

- Bluetooth 4.0? Support for external media servers?

My current setup includes a jailbroken first gen with a Crystal HD card for 1080P and a second gen, both jailbroken and running XBMC for 1080P movies and access to my media server(s). If this new model can replace all that, I'm sold.

Still no support for network drive ...

It's too bad. I really hate the idea to run a desktop computer just to access my movies/pictures/music. Can one this functionality with jailbreaking? Or perhaps I could set up DAAP service on linux file server, but it's just more work.

Why'o'why wont Apple allow sharing (even with their own airport extreme router)?
